I use the Little Black Classics and also the Mini Penguin Moderns for the same reason! I love having them when I'm not feeling motivated to read a full book but still want a little something, especially when I have so much to read for uni anyway. I might have to pick up Queen Victoria by Lucy Worsley. I picked up one of the Penguin Monarchs books on Victoria last month and found it to be such an interesting little introduction to Victoria. I'd definitely liked to read more about her! I definitely get what you mean about The Castle of Otranto being comedic. I had to study it this month specifically for its gothic elements and it was hard not to roll my eyes a lot when the gothic descriptions were really laid on thick. It's interesting though because Walpole knew that his audience wouldn't have gotten on board with a lot of the book so it's almost like he wrote it more lightheartedly than you would expect, as if he's allowing the audience that humour. I mean in the preface he says he just found the story instead of it being his own, as if he's saying "lol how weird is this story hahaha let me tell it to you" and I just...kind of really like that? 😂
Thank you so much Lucy, I can't tell you how happy I am that you enjoyed it so much AND that you loved Anne of Green Gables. It makes me very happy to know people are reading them together! And my vote is for the older TV adaptation which is honestly perfect!
Anne of Green Gables is my favourite book. It is so amazing! I thought I didn't like poetry, but war poetry has always been so amazing. I was just reading some of his work.
Anne of GG is one of my all time favorites and I'm currently reading Anne's House of Dreams...so cozy and charming! I've read The Castle of Otranto and I agree with your assessment...it's very melodramatic lol. It's good to read it to see where the gothic genre began and it is rather entertaining. The Silent Companions is sooo good and her new book The Corset is EVEN BETTER!! Highly recommended!
those penguin classics are so cute! The Suffragettes sounds incredible ☺️ Anne of Green Gables is adorable! it isn't a favorite of mine, but it's PERFECT to read during autumn ^^ aaah I really wanna read Pages&Co! I also love Rebecca, so I'm sorry that book didn't live up to the expectations! great wrap up 💜
You should deffo read my cousin Rachel if you loved Rebecca, the vibe is very similar and the character of Philip was very well done I thought, kind of like what you were saying when you recognise the negative qualities but also relate.
Oh Lucy it makes my heart sing that you too are an Avonlea kindred spirit 💜💜💜 Anne is my absolute favourite and she inspired me sooo very much when I was younger. I can highly recommend Montgomery's Emily series too - plus she wants to be a writer 😉 I can't wait to get stuck in to the Lucy Worsley biography - I went to a bookish evening of hers when the book was published and she was fabulous. She knows so much and is highly entertaining 😊
i love anne of green gables!! the rest of the series is hit or miss for me but would definitely recommend u read til the end. rilla of ingleside is great. new sub 😊
I remember reading all of the Anne books when I was growing up and really liking them. It's so good to discover a new series to enjoy. I've got Pages & Co here to read as well, and I think I'll try to get to it before the end of the year, as it sounds like a lovely cosy book for winter.
Black Boy- Richard Wright And Then There Were None- Agatha Christie The Goldfinch-Donna Tartt My Plain Jane-(a retelling of Jane Eyre in a YA style) Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows Neverworld Wake- Marisha Pessl
It's a shame to hear that you hated The House on the Strand, I loved it!! I just finished reading Rebecca which was absolutely incredible and I can't wait to read My Cousin Rachel next. I would love if you would do a dedicated Daphne du Maurier video in the future :)
This year Anne of the Green Gables have been appearing a lot on my feed. Isnt' that book that has the sentence " It's so good to live in a world where there are Octobers"? Does it has some similarity with "Little Women"?
I was taught that Walpole purposely invoked the kind of comedy Shakespeare used in his ambiguous and tragic plays! I think it was to make it feel more well-rounded, and to break up intense scenes (or what would have felt like intense scenes, in 1764 lol). Those henchman are kind of like Walpole's "Porter" characters. So you're bang on with your analysis of Otranto! Have you read The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe?
Glad u liked Anne of GG. I've seen many productions of it on the telly. I've been reading about the new booktuber catalogue that's being developed. It'll have lotsa interesting booktubey data. :-) I'm sure that marketing arms of at least some of the major publishers will be keenly interested in it, among others, & not necessarily publishers. The new cat. will likely have its own website in Jan. or Feb. '19. Recently I've been on a 'read articles' kick.
Very random question but what foundation do you wear? Your skin seems to be quite pale, as is mine, and I find it really difficult to find makeup that matches my skin tone- everything always seems to be too orange for me!
I know that this question is aimed at Lucy, but have you tried mixing the palest foundation with a little bit of white foundation? I'd recommend Manic Panic for the white. I'm really pale and this is how I achieve a foundation that matches my skin tone. Also, I've seen Rihanna has released a range of foundations with a greater range of skin tones. Maybe you could look into it? I hope you find at least some of this useful. :)
@@BeatrixOnyx I appreciate your reply! Thank you! I'll definitely look into the white foundation as I find Rihanna's foundation to be a little too dry for my skin
I use the Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Foundation. It’s a powder and I’ve used it for 5 years now and love it. It feels super smooth on my skin and I use the Pur Minerals foundation brush with it, which applies it brilliantly. I use the lightest shade in “Porcelain” because I have very pale skin! I did try a liquid foundation for a while but I found it quite patchy on my skin and I switched right back. The next shade up from Porcelain is good too if you get a bit of a tan in the summer because it’s not too much of a step up, but can be a little bit orange so if you’re pale I would recommend the lightest shade!
The Castle of Otranto "all quite comedic". :-) I think I might have hinted at that when you mentioned it was on your to read pile ... well, I have a soft spot for it too, but it's hardly the pinnacle of early Gothic literature. The Mysteries of Udolpho impressed me a lot more, but it's not without its moments of unintentional humour either. My theory is that the only people with an ounce of common sense in that genre are the maidservants.
Hi Lucy, I was wondering what classic book you would recommend to start with? I want to read at least one this year and I have a few classics but don't know where to start!! :) Also love your videos!! :)
I don't quite get the point of a book about Mary Shelley for children, if a child isn't old enough to know the details of Mary Shelley's life, they certainly aren't going to be reading her works. And I don't really think it's comparable to a children's book about a historical figure, because a historical figure is important because of their life, whereas the life of a literary figure is a supplement to their work. There's no way to explain the importance of Mary Shelley whilst removing the gritty details of her work and life, so I think maybe parents should just hang tight until their kids are teenagers, and just stick with giving them a copy of Frankenstein.
