Excellent books on your list. A study in drowning sounds super interesting, for sure!

Looking forward to your thoughts on new Richard Powers book! And hope you'll enjoy SoC and CK, always a joy when someone picks them up :)

I have a good feeling about it, so fingers crossed 🤞🏻 I’m really looking forward to them. I don’t often read books from the same series back to back, but I remember feeling like Six of Crows was quite fast paced so hopefully they’ll both easily sustain my momentum ☺️

Look at you tackling Brando Sando before the fifth book - cheering you on! I had mixed feelings about The Overstory too. It started off so strong but I DNFed it temporarily because it didn’t sustain my attention after the first third. I’ll attempt it again because I do enjoy cli-fi and would like to read more in the genre. I still need to read Crooked Kingdom too but also can’t remember anything about Six of Crows. Oops. Looking forward to spring here (but not summer). I miss sitting out on the verandah to read and soak up the sun.

Thank you! I’ve finished book 3.5 now so I’m good to go ☺️ I felt that how The Overstory went was such a shame because it was really such a strong start. I can’t even really remember now how the plot went because I wasn’t pushed on it, but I still think about its opening scenes even though it’s been quite some time since I read it. Also, cli-fi! I never knew what it was called 😅 Quite a few people say that Crooked Kingdom was better than Six of Crows so I look forward to getting stuck back into them. Hopefully you can enjoy Spring without the thought of a looming Summer getting to you too much 🌸

Hope you enjoy Six of Crows! I struggled to get into it (lots of flashbacky stuff) but looooovvvveeeedddd Crooked Kingdom. Definitely worth hanging in there if you struggle!

Thank you! I remember enjoying Six of Crows so hopefully I’ll fly through it. So many people say that Crooked Kingdom is the better book, so I really look forward to picking that one up ☺️

If you've enjoyed novels that stand on respect and awe for the natural world as one of the pillars, like Richard Powers' writing, I would recommend "A Cat at the End of the World" by Robert Perišić, a Croatian author. I've just finished it and it is one of my dearest books I've read this year. The story follows a boy, a cat and a donkey in a period of setting up one of the first Greek settlements in the Adriatic islands. A lot of warm and thought provoking musings, with references to real life places. It can be a change delving into less well known authors not so much hyped on the BookTube but I think definitely deserves more attention :)

Thanks for the recommendation, Sara. It sounds like a really great read. It's so easy to get caught up in the hype of online book recommendations, but I've loved so many books that I've never heard about on social media too. Once my physical TBR becomes more manageable, I really hope to read some lesser known books, and some books from some countries I've never read from. Off the top of my head, I've never read from any Croatian authors and your recommendation sounds like a great place to start ☺️

The Richard Powers sounds good!! I do want to try Brandon Sanderson, but I've never read anything by him. I own Shadow and Bone as I loved the Netflix show (can't believe they cancelled it!!!) and I must get to that one too. My reading plans for Sept are focused just on Shorty September at the mo!

I'm very much looking forward to the new Richard Powers - I've heard really good things about this and I think that the issues I've had with his works that I've already read don't seem to be at play in this one, so fingers crossed! I just happened to pick up The Way of Kings when I was at a loose end in my partner's house, and I have no regrets. I've heard that the Mistborn books are probably a better place to start though, or with some of his recent standalones either ☺️ I hope you're enjoying Shorty September so far. I'm completely ignoring it in the effort to get through my own physical reads, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for next year that I can take part.

@@aiscahill yes he has a guide to how to start with his books on his website I've noticed. There are so many readathons on all the time that you have to choose what works!

Hi Aisling, I've been a historical/myth based fantasy reader since bindgeing The Winternight Trilogy in 2020. I also love cozier fantasy. Shirley Jackson is as gothic as I get. I''m participating in Shorty September for the first time. Your TBR inspired me to go a little dark so I'll be reading the Ice Palace. I haven't gotten along with Japanese translated books. Maybe a Norwegian one will be different?

I’ve read the first two Winternight books and plan to read the third and final book this coming Winter. They’re great books 😊 I hope you enjoy The Ice Palace. It’s a little strange, and incredibly atmospheric. I loved it when I read it ❄️

I’m currently reading ‘Death Tango’ by M. Lachi, a scifi story of augmented humans, bots, hackers, megacorps, and murder. I think it’s an indie book, and I’m really liking it so far. Just finished ‘Orbital’, nominated for the LeGuin and Booker. Hate to say it, but it really didn’t work for me. Slice of life of 6 astronauts during routine day, meditative, gorgeous descriptions of the Earth, but in the end just fell flat.

Death Tango sounds so interesting. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of it, but it sounds like it has a lot going for it ☺️ I feel like Orbital has been quite divisive so far. Plenty of people seem to LOVE it, and then there are loads like you who didn’t quite love it in the end. I didn’t have any huge ambitions to read it, but the more I hear about it, the more curious I am. It might be one for my 2025 TBR ☺️

I had the same experience as you with the Overstory! I will finish Middlemarch in September and it already makes me a bit sad, since it was part of my life for the past seven months😊. I will also read my first Trevor William book. I only heard of him last week and since he is irish and the exerpt that I listened to was beautiful, I couldn't resist. Have you read any of his works?
@aiscahill
@aiscahill 16 дней назад
I've heard the same about The Overstory from others, too. Ahhh seven months is such a long and lovely time to spend with a book. I hope you don't find it too tough to get into other books once you're done. I actually haven't read any Trevor, which is awful. I've been really bad at reading Irish literature, which is something I want to work on once I get through my physical TBR. I do hear great things about his works though, so I hope his writing lives up to your expectations ☺️
