I wish I lived in a milder climate, though I can grow crops through my winters without cover. I envy the fact you are still harvesting summer crops in September. Mine have long been burned up in the Louisiana sun. I have been wanting to try shade cloth to extend my summer crops, but keep procrastinating. As always, you have a beautiful garden.

I lost all of my Minnesota Mini melons to that darned mildew! Once it took hold, nothing I did; from taking leaves off to spraying, could save the plants. Got no melons to eat. Will start earlier next year to avoid this. Lost one cucumber plant to the same problem. Did manage to get some fruit off it. The Marketmore 76 did very well and held off the mildew as long as it could. I helpe it by getting rid of it's infected neighbor as fast as I could. My rutabaga did very well this year as did the tomatoes, cabbage, elephant kale, collard greens, and carrots. Already got winter plants in the ground. Only thing left to plant for spring are the garlics. Zone 6 has been erratic this year. Now a hurricane is coming. Oh well. I had no idea you could eat sweet potato leaves. I found out that rutabaga leaves can be eaten this year. More useful information from this channel. Glad I subscribed.

@OneYardRevolution 6 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear that, Barbara. Starting earlier might help. I'd also recommend looking for PM resistant varieties to grow. I've never been too impressed with any of the prevention methods. They don't seem to help much.

Great content as always, personally today really feels like Fall in Tacoma WA and my garden is almost done for--I'm happy I need a break, LOL. Powdery mildew killed some mid summer planted peas, but I did get a small harvest, my tuscan kale will last throughout the winter or most of it anyway, I only eat it cooked, but I suggest that organic gardeners really inspect the leaves well even after washing for tiny looper worms, trust me, you may need a jeweler's loupe to see them but they might be there--some of the microscopic munchers may be grouped on a single leaf, although it would cause no harm to eat the critters I would rather not, LOL. One of my best crops has been micro green basil which I have been growing in a small narrow container for months without flowering and giving me plenty of tiny tender leaves for pizzas, etc. My freezer is full of stuff and I count this summer as a winner.

That's amazing. I'm further north so the garden is finishing up. I still get dwarf blue kale and broccoli. A few peppers, but many are rotting from the cold. The deer jumped the fence and went for my tomatoes, skipped everything else. Some day I may try a small hoop house like yours for late fall greens. I hadn't really been into greens until this year, but they are so good in soup. I'm going to really miss them.
