Why is it when Murphey DNF's a book it sounds like she is breaking up with someone but she doesn't want to hurt their feelings: "It's not you, it's me, I am just not in a space right now to be in a long-term relationship, you seem like a really nice guy and all, I am so sorry... I read a lot. However I have no idea of what I’ve read because my mind constantly wanders off to other things. Unfortunately I’ve had this problem all my life. I’m in my late 40’s now. I still have the same issue. I guess inattentive reading is better than no reading at all. I’m not going to give up!

The Memoirs of Lady Trent series are such beautiful books! I always tried very hard (and sometimes failed) to not get too spoiled with its illustrations, haha. I read up to book 3 some years ago and abandoned the series because it had gotten a bit too political for my liking then (dragons! I wanted more dragons! 🐉), but I might pick it up again. Looking forward to hearing what you think about the next ones!

September was a good reading month for me! Having recently discovered The Cosmere, this month I got through Warbreaker and era 2 of Mistborn. It's been fun! I wasn't super hot on Warbreaker and The Alloy of Law, but they were still decent enough. Shadows of Self and the Bands of Mourning, however, were great to me. Shadows of Self addressed some of my major criticisms of The Alloy of Law and brought everything together in a satisfying way, and I love how much it felt like The Bands of Mourning expanded the world and set the stage for an interesting finale. Looking forward to The Lost Metal next year!

A must read for anyone who wants to study games *Playing With Feelings*, by Audrey Anable. Shows how video games can convey feelings other than hedonistic elation. *Games of Empire*, by Nick Dyer-Witherford and Greig de Peuter. How videogames and capitalism have been linked since birth. As for fiction, I'm mostly reading manga nowadays (in fact, I found this channel thanks to her One Piece arc reviews). Recently finished *20th Century Boys*, by Naoki Urasawa. I think people being upset by someone talking about it when their friends write stuff and they read it is stupid and gatekeepy... and also more reflective of the jadedness and distrust of the people who have a problem with it than it does about the person actually talking about their friends' work(s), or something. But maybe that's just me.. 🤷‍♀️ I mean..Just because someone you know wrote it, doesn't automatically guarantee that you're going to like it. And If you can't be honest with your friends, even when you don't like something, I question if you have great friends.😅😅 _sorry_ Plus, who freaking cares, if friends can't be there for each other or gush together or support each other or help give each other legs up when they legitimately believe in each other then who can.

One of the five books I read this month was The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and I was so let down. I saw so many good reviews online and I've been on a crime fiction kick lately, so I thought surely one of the most influential books in the genre would hold up... But no.
@booklanerecommendations
@booklanerecommendations 3 года назад
Haha I read that book last year and didn't like it either. I loved the subtle humor, but disliked almost everything else. The 'mystery' didn't interest me at all, there weren't really any clues or anything 'unusual' that made me want to know what happened, and I don't understand why the pacing was the way it was: solving the mystery really early on and then chasing after a loose end that I as the reader didn't care about. And on top of all this, the book was super offensive. And I don't mean outdated opinions or harmful stereotypes: those are in a lot of books, and I can still enjoy a book if there's a scene or a line or a character somewhere that feels offensive to me or other readers. This book was a whole 'nother level. It felt like it was going out of its way to offend every minority group in existence.
@chrisbade2119
@chrisbade2119 3 года назад
@@booklanerecommendations One of the things I hated was the mystery as well. There some interesting aspects to it but what I didnt like thr ridiculous leaps in deduction and reasoning Marlowe uses in figuring things out. I think the main offender for this is when he somehow figures out at the end that Carmen killed Rusty, her sisters husband. From what I've read online, people say you don't read Chandler for the plot but rather the atmosphere, which basically meant to me "just accept that Marlowe can figure things out randomly because the plot demands it."
@booklanerecommendations
@booklanerecommendations 3 года назад
@@chrisbade2119 I have occasionally read a book where the plot and characters were 'meh' but the atmosphere and writing style were so good that I really liked the book despite that (honestly I'm just describing The Night Circus and can't think of any other examples). The Big Sleep wasn't part of this rare category. I liked the noir atmosphere in some parts, but it felt very 'tell'-y and more suited to a movie. I really didn't need to know what every character in every scene was wearing. As for the mystery, I prefer the kind where the reader can puzzle along and piece clues together, like with Agatha Christie.

Maybe some collections of sci-fi or fantasy short stories? Those don't require a long attention span, and let you sample a particular author's range or get a taste for a bunch of different authors. That way you have a sense if you want to look up their longer works! Two single-author ones I recommend are "The Birthday of the World" by Ursula LeGuin (she's a master of sci-fi worldbuilding in a short page count, with very culture-focused stories, and that really shows here) and "Fragile Things" by Neil Gaiman (which really showcases his range, from Sherlock Holmes/Lovecraft crossovers - 'A Study in Emerald' - to poetry to a unique take on zombies in 'Bitter grounds'). I'm usually hesitant to pick up multi-author collections, but "Afro SF: Science Fiction by African Writers" had a lot of really excellent short stories: 'Moom' (which is also the first chapter of 'Lagoon') is an alien first-encounter from the perspective of a swordfish, 'Home Affairs' is about the results of trying to fight bureaucratic corruption by replacing bureaucrats with robots...and so on. Folktale collections from different cultures are also good for getting a lot of short, engaging stories.
