@John Lemon I think Reimu may be the only person she can call a "friend" or at least something similar to a friend (after EoSD events). Sakuya is her guard and maid and while she cares about her deeply, that's not friendship (there is also a very interesting fan theory that she's a former vampire hunter whom Remilia defeated, but no such thing was confirmed). Patchouli does her stuff and keeps to herself. Flandre is Flandre. Meiling again is a guard, who respects Remilia. She isn't a type of vampire who goes on a killing rampage (at least in Gensokyo), so she stays at Koumakan. And it is lonely and boring, to put it simple.

Also watch Touhou Gensou Mangekyou, it's a fanmade short anime about Perfect Cherry Blossom events (Yuyuko shenanigans) There are torrents (lossy and lossless) with Touhou fan music (found on nyaa.si), in 2014 there were like 45000+ tracks of different genres and quality I think, now should be much more. Edit: but that's actually not how the barrier was made, but still awesome.

@John Lemon if it’s a human, they can become a resident by asking the shrine maiden when they enter. Everyone else requires a unique character design, own musical track and be featured in a game or some official content

Once you set down the Touhou path it just spirals out of control and you get hooked BAD. Be careful digging more because its like a drug. Touhou is considered the most active and productive fanbase in existence by even Guiness World Records. There are entire companies who's sole profit stem from Touhou products and bands that solely produce their own twists on Touhou music

If you're wondering, Touhou is basically a series of bullet hell games, with spin-off fighting games as well. It's all made by one guy, and the art is bad but the overall bullet patterns are fun, challenging and visually appealing. As you can see from these covers the music from Touhou is fantastic with each game having multiple golden tracks.

Oh! I own Deathsmiles on the 360. Is that considered Touhou?

Clarque I've never owned a console so I'm basing my thoughts on the trailer alone. Firstly, Touhou's not a genre, just a series within a genre called bullet hell (which Deathsmiles definitely is). Unlike Deathsmiles, which is horizontal, Touhou is vertical, so all the bullets come from the top/bottom of the screen instead. Touhou is also 1-player only. I'll also say that the art in Deathsmiles is substantially better, and Touhou doesn't have as many playable characters, since every game is relatively short with 45 minutes per playthrough, though the playable characters constantly change and tend to have different shot-types every game. If you're interested in playing another variation of the Deathsmiles' genre, I suggest looking into Touhou (specifically Lunatic mode in each game). Do keep in mind that Touhou is an indie game made by an exact number of 1 developer. Also, the first 5 games are only available in a certain old console named PC96 (there are emulators available, though), so I suggest going from Touhou 6 and onwards if you're interested.

Actually, if you're interessted they are free, but like ZeStred said, it's like a drug so watch your step. Also, since the fanbase is pretty big and active you can find a lot of Touhou related stuff, such artworks, doujin, fan made games (wich some of them are just awesome) and even animes and more. If you wanna try, you can get them from a site called "Moriya Shrine" it include all the official games and a lot of fan made.

Totally agree with you. There's so much emotion. It is on the one hand scary and frightening, and the other is very calm and gentle. So many different spectra. I really hope that RichaadEB will do a cover on this topic.
