I would have used roofing caulk over the tape. The tape isn't that thick and it can leak if the two matting surfaces aren't perfectly flat. You can gob the hell out of the roofing caulk to make sure it'll be thick enough to provide an excellent seal.
Great video ya'll good job! I believe that was a good call. So ironic that I've been digging my septic up last couple days and found your video. I'm 69 years old just can't do that manual labor like i used to thank god i have my little 1626 mahindra tractor it did most of the work. I would like to put risers on mine but i have 2 small lids 8x10 inch ones. Ya'll have a beautiful homestead. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun enjoy ya'lls family time and homestead
Hello Mike! Thank you for the kind words. We really do enjoy this land and the family. I don't care what people say, these small tractors definitely have their places and have exceptional use cases! Have a fantastic day.
That’s going to be a big help in the future! I think I’ll add one to ours next time we have it pumped. Last spring Dads entire top collapsed and fell inside the tank. It was a mess to clean out and fix. This was a very helpful video!
Oh no. Did you have to replace the entire tank? Or just a new top? Mine is a complete cast cement box, but I guess if just the top collapsed that might be an easier fix the ripping out the entire thing. And yes adding the risers takes a lot of the stress of needing to dig it up every few years.
@@RossOnTheLand his was built in the 1950’s or early 60’s. The lid didn’t have rebar in it so the cement just got brittle and gave way. He bought some precast concrete lids, I think they were 24”x 60” x 4” and it took 3 sections. I was worried we would have to replace the tank at first. I’ve got at least one video on it (Septic Tank Lid Collapse Repair).
That job really stinks. You're going to be so glad you did that in 2 years! Seriously Ross, your videos are highly entertaining and fun to watch. Your channel is going to really grow. Nice job.
Because you no longer have the concrete lid, you’re required to have interior secondary safety lids just in case the primary lid fails if a child/person steps on the primary lid.
n those instances where a riser cover weighs less than 59 pounds, the sewage tank cover must remain on the tank, or a secondary safety lid or device must be provided beneath the riser cover.
Well that's cool. I have them out here, but they stick up out of the ground about 4 inches so I have to mow around them and use the weed eater. Nice work, bud.
Thank you. I was thinking mine would e that way as well, but my septic emptier guy told me about these other kind of risers from a completing company. Much better. Thanks for watching.
It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta' do it! 😉 Honestly, I think that's one of those DIY jobs that I'm not going to "DIY"! Good on you Ross for getting it done!
Great job on the video. I will be doing the same thing next summer. Not looking forward to it but needs to be done. I'm surprised your septic tank is only about 1 foot deep. Ours around here are about 4 feet deep. So I will be using my backhoe to dig up the septic. Keep up the great 👍 work Ross. Take care 🙂
Thanks ! Ya all the tanks are about that same depth here didn't think they would need to be deeper. Learn something new every day. Thanks for watching.
You get all the good jobs. You did make me laugh at the end when you ased if we wanted to see more content, I think we saw enough content looking through the lids lol. Great job adding the risers, I am surprised they were not fitted originally. We have work to do on our system next year and it is a job I am not looking forward to
Haha! I didn't even think my last comment was a joke. Missed opportunity on my part! I agree. They should be included on all systems! Makes no sense. It wasn't as bad as it could have been. Good luck with yours. Thanks for watching.
Hi Ross. That was interesting. I have never seen the square risers. The ones that I have seen are round. I like that you can mow over yours. Mine have rebar handles that I can't mow over with either one of my rides. I use a push mower and have no trouble at all.
I was afraid of getting the curved caps. I wanted something that let me ride over them. I only heard from the septic guy about the square imbedded plastic riser as opposed to just a round one. Thanks for watching.
Great Job on the Riser And looks like you have a great sidekick helping you out ! Keep up the good work I think I have damaged my Go Pro It has taken a few falls now and cracked the lens as well as it won’t fully charge 🙁 Will be looking forward to your camera reviews!
Thank you for watching. Very happy with the results, even happier with my son's help :) and I have posted my review video for the DJI Action 2 and it is not a camera I recommend for dirty hard work... I loved the concept, but major overheating issues caused me to return it for a refund. Watch that video. Thanks for watching
How's she goin'? That's a good plan to pump your tank every 2 years. Having the solids get into the leech field would be the end of your system and then to re do it would be a pricey proposition I expect!!! Nice job with those risers too. They'll be real nice and blend in well with the grade next summer. Take care!!!
This will definitely make your life easier in two years 👍🏻, do they make different heights for the risers? Our tanks are cleaned every two years and the cost is incorporated in our property taxes, the municipality has a contract with a pumping company. Have a great one 🙋🏼♂️🙂👍🏻
Thank you, I think they do have different heights but for the cement plus riser this was what was suggested. Or I would have had to add an extension ring for another 4 inches I believe. Nice that your is included. Not so in Ontario... Another benefit of living in the Belle Provance.:) Cheers
Hello Jimmy, I ordered from a company called Boyd Bros Concrete. They worked fantastic, and will make future clean outs very easy. Let me know if you have any further questions.
@@RossOnTheLand Oh no, I just noticed that they are in Canada. I’m in Ohio. I imagine I could find something like this maybe from a local septic or concrete shop. Thank you for the info.
Good job on the risers, but don't agree with pumping out every two years. I have not pumped mine out since we put it in five years ago and my parents have not pumped theirs out in more than twenty years. If the septic is working correctly then you should have have to pump it out until the solids are at least a third of height of the water level, which takes a very long time unless you are throwing stuff down your sink you should not...grease, vegetable matter, meat etc...
Thank you for the comments. I 💯 agree with you and I really should have mentioned these points about pump out rates. My pump out guy mentioned those stats, and suggested in my case to pump every 2 years based on what he found inside. I did mention not having to do it every 2 years when the kids leave, and I know for a fact, our house doesn't do our septic system any favours... :) And more than I care to admit stuff other than crap goes down the drain. Much appreciated.
@@RossOnTheLand Pump frequency depends on the rate of accumulation of sludge in the tank. If RRR parents tanks don't have much sludge their pump interval may be ok but it would be prudent to dig out the lids and check a sludge level. There are videos on how this is done, but once the tank is accessed sludge is 'mud' like stuff at the bottom, a stick stuck in to the bottom of the tank will have the sludge mark on it when removed. Takes about 20 seconds (after X hours of digging out the lid.) After doing the riser install on my tanks, I got a piece of 6' long 2" PVC tubing and stuck it into the tanks and just by feel could tell where the sludge level was, there was a noticeable increase in resistance when the end of the pipe hit the sludge level, which was ~2' in the first tank, last pumped in 2011 and ~1' in the second tank which has not been pumped in 30+ yrs.
