Many years ago my uncle played the bagpipes for side money. He got called to work a funeral one time for 150 dollars , but he overslept. He raced around town till he found the cemetary , 3 guys were filling in the grave .. He got out and played anyway ( amazing grace ) .. The diggers had tears in their eyes and they all thanked him.. One guy said " In all my years digging septic tanks , I never heard anything so beautiful".

When i built my house in the Keys the concrete tank was built in Sebring Fl. It had 2 seperate compartments, the solids stayed in the first one and the liquid emptied into the second one. There was a separate pump that pumped air into the liquid aerating it as is done in sewer treatment plants. Then the liquid drained into a drain field. My present home has a fiberglass septic tank of 1500 gallons, the liquid drains off into a separate 500 gallon fiberglass pump tank. The pump is like a sump pump with a float that activates the switch. The liquid is pumped to an elevated mound containing 3 ft long 12” high plastic domes, a total of 400 lineal feet of them in 4 separate rows. There is no stone used and no drain pipes, just the domes, then covered with fabric then dirt. I installed both systems myself, with inspections by the county health departments.

Thats old school, concrete tanks used to be the norm. Where septic tanks get installed today can't get a truck the spot. Plastic tanks are the new normal. When we did install concrete tanks we got them in two halves. We'd put the bottom in put the tar seal then put the top on. Then mix up some gype and seal up the seam.

Mike, good to see your faring well. But, I'd like to see you "paint somthin with the portland" no big deal. I have learned so much from your videos, I feel like I know you. Where I live, across the backyard creek and embankment is the Factory Theatre, that building when I was younger made (indeed mixed their own concrete) precast concrete steps, hollow inside just like the septic tanks actually very much like them but with the steps included and sockets for railings to be added, various designs as determined by orders received. They sat out in the open curing and we kids - in off hours - played tag and hide and seek and generally jumped around - lots of fun had, but pretty dangerous with scrapes, bruises and no doubt a concussion or two (in the 60's that was par for the course).

I wouldn't recomend this technique for poopie but a friend of mine needed a gray water tank and at the same time he had to get rid of his rotted out 1971, fiberglass, cuddy cabin. So he cut the hull and deck about four feet from the bow. Upended the result and dropped it in a hole. Think of the possibilities of recycycling upside down boats!!!

Years ago my boss installed a new septic tank for a customer whose house was an island. It was delivered late in the day so they placed it in the hole and planned to hook it up the next day. Over night the hole flooded and floated the tank out of the hole and onto the lawn.

Now, the mold release was said to be 'oil' what might that be: a light petroleum product, vegetable oil, some 'secret sauce', or detergent? In most of your forming videos I think you have used plain boards to fine effect, but these tanks seem to want something better.

Hi Mike. Glad to see new content coming from you in your new home base in Florida. I’m up in your old state but I’m located in Northwestern PA. My question is about an outdoor concrete patio that I’m getting ready to pour at my camp. The only local ready mix company recently closed so I’m going to make my own concrete old school. I was planning to use a rich 1:2:2 mix with added fiber and liquid air admixture to help with freeze thaw. Do you recommend the 1:2:2 mix for this application in my area based on your experience in PA? Or would a 1:2:3 mix hold up to our winters ok too? Really value your thoughts on this one based on your real world experience especially in our climate up north in Pennsylvania.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 месяца назад
Hi Andy, if I mix it by hand I usually go ,1-1/4 portland to 2 sand and 2 stone, but that's me or if I use the ready mix bags I add a trowel full of Portland to a bag, but then again that's me, thanks Mike
@andymauthe5508
@andymauthe5508 2 месяца назад
Thanks Mike for the reply. That confirms that I’ll go on the rich side and stay with the 1:2:2 mix with a little heavy on the 1 of Portland. I’ll be thinking of you when I pour this patio “old school”. Ain’t no big deal right?

Hey Mike👋 from Wisconsin. I don't remember what you said for combo ratios for different things but I will go back and reread. My ex husband killed my mare. I won't say anymore bc I am going to write a book! I will say she was the best for me, my friend and she taught me a lot. I want to make a cement cross for her.. my friends husband, well, he's my friend too, is making the cast holder? u know wht I mean..Its going to be 5' tall, yes it is, a foot in depth n 7" across. Wisconsin weather is cold hot humid. I want Flagstaff AZ. Sandy soil here. He is putting "a smthg" in the ground to keep it secure. I know I shldnt ask but if it was you...what wld.. u.. use. You go such awesome places n happy for u tht u do. I read those first. NEVER to old to learn. Also hope u like Florida..its, ahh, nice place. I ordered my chestnut trees from down there..tree lover..Ok then..I mean if u have time,.if not, I understand. Stay happy.
