The level of eloquence combined with perfect depth of explanation is absolute fucking gold. Such a rarity and for me personally, priceless. That gift to place yourself in a noob's mindset to provide just the perfect amount of information, is practically unique. Thank you!
Great vid, super helpful - I just picked up a TR-8S after seeing your utilization of the Push 2 and have been blown away with how well these two pair. Thanks for sharing the TR-8 Rack - it's terrific..
@@twoHRdrive still a great option as you have the tactile response of knobs and the ability to be more granular with time using the push. To me it’s a no brainer. I had to fiddle with MIDI stuff the first day I got it but since then these two have been connected for every session.
This also works with the TR-8S via USB. First, add the TR-8S as an aggregate device using the Audio Midi Setup tool in MacOS. Windows users will need to download the ASIO4ALL driver to create the aggregate device. Follow all of Ed's instructions until you reach the external instrument setup. Set midi output to TR-8S and midi channel to 10. Assign each pad sequentially starting with channel 5 and ending on channel 15. Volume, tune, decay, and ctrl controls work for each track. Ensure that you have Ableton's midi output control for the device set to track and sync, and ensure that the TRACK AND SYNC BUTTONS FOR MIDI IN are disabled, otherwise, your TR-8S will glitch out and crash (especially if you're manipulating the onboard controls). Same rules apply from Ed's video. Do not use the onboard sequencer. Thanks for your guidance on this, Ed. It's exactly what I needed to get started.
@@mredrollo I missed a critical step. If you experience drifting issues, go into the audio midi setup, and under your aggregate device, click drift correction next to your audio interface and the TR. After doing this, everything locks to the metronome spot on.
@@ActualKaktus little late to the party here but I managed to get my tr8s running following yours and Eds instructions... the only issue I am having is I cant get the effects to work on the tr8s? Any ideas? Thanks again
I could get the Push to send Midi to the Tr-8s with an Ext Inst .. but when I dropped the Ext Inst into the Drum Rack so I could Sequence it, it stopped working. After 2 hours I downloaded your pack & the freaking thing works .. you're my hero .. now to revere engineer why, but THANK YOU
Thanks so much for this video , I have spent all week trying to figure this out. Downloaded your drum rack, followed the steps and everything working as I wanted.
Tks for video and shared kit on your site! I was trying to con figure the same things with drumbrute but i had a frustrating time with “play always C3 note” on I|O section of drumrack! Now I’ve downloaded your kit and it confirms that you have changed all Receive-play match. Tks tks tks!!!
Is there a way I can do the same with the Roland MC707 groove box, assigning 8 tracks/channels from the 707 into Ableton so as I can add any drum and tone of my choice triggered through the push 2? I was just multitracking into ableton with the 707 before albeit I use your method now with the tr8
@@VK3FADU hey man. I’m not exactly sure what the benefit would be. I suppose I don’t own a groove box so don’t really know what it’s used for. If you were wanting to add drums sounds of your choice and use Push there is really no need for a TR8 or the 707 is there? You could just load up a drum rack and go nuts. But maybe I’m missing something?
@@mredrollo hi mate I normally would multi track 8 tracks into Reason with the 707 but have changed to Ableton plus the push 2 and open to new ideas trying to integrate all my hardware.
This is a really interesting use of the Push 2 for sequencing. I'm curious if you now own the TR8s? That's the unit I just purchased and I'm also running it with Ableton and Push 2. The TR8s has the A through H scene selectors which seem to minmic what you have set up in the Push. Just curious if you've had your hands on a TR8s and if so would you change your approach because of it?
I’ve not used the Tr8s and don’t think I ever will. I love being able to use Ableton Love to sequences things just generally. It’s rock solid and simple.
This is an excellent demo Ed and answers a lot of questions that I have had re: Push 2 and the TR8. Quick question though: any ideas how I could I integrate this with my MX-1?
Thanks so much buddy. I actually don't have experience with the MX-1 so unfortunately cant comment on that. Worth downloading the free rack and experimenting though. Let me know how you get on!
Excellent video, thanks! The TR-8 is limited to only being able to save 16 patterns of up to 32 steps.....so I'd been wondering if I could use the novation circuit tracks or model:samples as a controller/sequencer for it as they can save way more patterns. Great!
Many thanks for this video! Struggling to get this working with my TR-8S running through an Allen & Heath QU24 (audio interface). So close to the setup I'd really like!
@@mredrollo Hi Ed. Yeh all hooked up with USB but using audio assignable outs on the Tr-8S to the QU channels. TR-8S has 6 assignable jack outs but I'm also using mix out to get an extra 2 tracks, one panned left, other right on the QU. Dropped you a gmail and Fb message, be great if you could check those.
Cool, I do the same thing with the TR-8S! I overcomplicated my setup a bit by looping the TR-8S MIDI through Live and turning off local control. This allowed me to do some stuff where I can sequence on either the Push or the TR-8S depending on my mood, and also record knob movements as automation. (The annoying bit is that I need a secondary "hardware" track permanently set to Monitor In, dedicated to keeping the TR-8S inputs flowing even when the Push is "attached" to a different device. Otherwise the MIDI CC doesn't flow. Oh, and I also had to do some wacky stuff to make sure that the notes coming out of the TR got changed to the notes of my drum rack, since I use the xpresspads-style symmetric note layout for finger drumming. All in all though, they both work really well together, and I love not having to pick out drum samples!
@@mredrollo No videos yet, but I'm starting to realize that it might be useful to share. I'm in the process of switching from using the USB outputs (as a composite device, which I find super flaky) over to analog outs - currently just using MIX out which is nice for the effects, but I'm going to try using the assignable outputs so that I can get the kick on its own channel for sidechaining. I'll maybe record a vid once I get that all working!
Thanks Ed for this. I recently discovered your channel, and you have been a huge help. How would I use this for sidechaining? I make my sub bass using the model D, but I don't see a way to side chain the model D to just the bass drum. It wants to side chain to all of the TR8-s audio. Any way to separate out the individual audio? Hope this question makes sense. BTW, Equanimity is beautiful.
Thanks so much! You could try side-chaining with an EQ filter to only react to the low end. It it’s not a great solution. This set up is limited as yeah, everything comes through one channel. Or you could set up a dummy clip with the same kick drum pattern to side chain. Depends how “in the moment” you want to be with the sequencer. For me my kick is 4 to the floor so it’s an easy fix. Hope that helps!
Wow, I finally got this method to work after trying a million different ways to being able to sequence from the TR-8S but struggling with unpredictable latency, yay! Would be great to be able to sequence on the TR-8S as well but TBF, it's a lot nicer on the Push 3 anyway. Thank you!!
actually, worked really well a couple of times but just hit play again and now I have latency, doh! The H/W latency on the drum rack doesn't seem to make any difference (should it?) nor does the MIDI Clock Sync Delay in the MIDI Output settings (which at least had an effect when I was trying other approaches). Any ideas?
Ha, I had another pad selected, not BASS DRUM! HW Latency adjustment now works, lol. I do get some drift despite following @ActualKaktus 's recommendation on setting drift correction in the aggregate device but it's not toooo bad. Will try with the MIDI setup once my new Audio Interface arrives.
I do get some weird interference/crackling sound every now and then, no idea what's causing that. When it just happened then, the latency increased a lot from 5ms to 23ms, pretty odd.
OK, after much dicking around with various tweaks to get the USB setup going without completely unpredictable latency, finally gave up and ordered a new AI with midi out and have just hooked it up. Seems to be working seamlessly so far!
@mredollo I use push 2 and drum racks. So Does this method really turn the Tr8 into a midi device for faders and an effects unit? So the sounds within the the Tr-8 aren't used? Could you just do what you are doing with Push 2? Although it's not as hands on and convenient with all the faders.
Thank you so much for this informative video! I have saved up to get this exact setup except TR8S instead of TR8. Would this setup work for the TR8S as well? Also could you please recommend what would be a reasonable audio interface for connecting these two to my Ableton Live?
I gotta figure out how to do this with my launchkeys 49 and Logic X. I can't spend more money on all this cool geeeeeeaaar right now. Nice explainer, man.
Hello! Thanks for the release! A very useful thing. But I had a problem. I have TR-8, Ableton Live 10, Push 2 and Scarlett 18i8 (1st generation). I downloaded your "tr-8 drum rack" and followed the instructions in this video, but since I'm new to Ableton Live and don't know much English, I might be missing something. The fact is that when I press the Start button on Push, the TR-8 does not start. Also effects (Deley, Reverb, Scutter) do not work on TR-8. Encoders: tune, decay, comp, snappy and attak are working properly. Can you help me figure it out?
@@mredrollo Thanks for responding so soon! Synchronization of the audio device in preferences is enabled, as you wrote. Another interesting point: if I press "Start" on TR-8 (it starts the pattern), and then press "Play" on Push 2 twice in a row, then TR-8 stops. Maybe the problem is in the settings of the TR-8 and Push 2 themselves, or in their firmware?
Hi I have a Scarlett 2i2 so I don’t have the midi in and out on the back like you have. Is there a way to connect it so I can send midi to the tr8s like you do. Like to create this kind of communication loop? I would really appreciate any help. I have the same setup like push 2 and tr8s and iam pretty much a beginner and I haven’t found a good way to enjoy jamming and live playing yet. Thanks
I hate that the midi in f the TR-8 for the individual hits don't line up with the default pads of the drumkit (C-1, C#-1, etc). I use bitwig with the push, so I'm mostly curious how you got the pad aligned with the right sound of the TR-8? Some help would be greatly appreciated!
Im not quite getting it.why would I like to control the TR8 from an other device, when you still need to change reverb and delay on the TR8? And why would I only use a mono strip to send it to the interface? Guess I missed the core problem🤦🏼♂️
Thanks for the video, Ed ! Does it have to be a specific midi notes in oder for the tr8 to recognize and trigger into their own follwing instruments kick snare hat etc. ?
@@lachiewheeler9888 I did figure it out though. and yes it needs to b specific notes, just look out with in the drum rack i/o that each pad is not triggering the same note.
YeH, but I’ve always found USB to be horribly unreliable with regards to latency. The more strain on your computer the worse it gets. 5 pin midi cable ALL the way!
This is super helpful - I'm trying to find out if you can program the tr8 to start and stop with either CC or midi from Ableton 11 -- do you know if this is possible? (ie. I'm running tracks for live, and want the TR8 sequence to not only clock with the tempo in ableton, but would like for it to start playing the sequence when a scene is launched, and stop when specified as well)
I believe that once the Tr-8 is running. It’s running! It clocks to global start and stop. So unless you are starting and stopping Live the Tr-8 will just keep running. This is why I chose to ignore the inbuilt tr-8 sequencer and just program MIDi clips. This way I have full control over what plays and when.
thanks for the video. any ideas for adding individual Ableton FX (not the TR-8's) to the pads? when using the rack, which is great btw, as all audio comes in via the BD, only track effects will work. but say I wanted a delay on the snare only?
Probably not mate, as it's all coming through one channel. Hence why I use the TR-8 onboard effects. You could always experiment with the USB soundcard and dividing all the channels up that way. But that's unfamiliar territory for me.
Thank you so much! Perhaps a really dumb question, but how do you EQ/mix each instrument (sample) later? Everything sounds so good together, but I'm curious if you process each sample as an independent track. With only one audio cable going into your audio interface? Again thanks for all your videos and hard work !!!
hey there i was wondering if anyone could help i followed the video to the letter with my tr8-s and ableton bit when i try to set the audio from the tr8 the sound comes throw dubbled up. i am using a a scarlet 2i4 sound card and the tr8 is plugged into imputs 1 and 2. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure there are no sequences programmed on the Tr-8. The sequence MUST be blank. Also make sure to check you Focusrite Control and that the Tr-8 channels are muted for direct monitoring.
@mredrollo I have a little issue here...when I use the compressor on the rack I get a very disturbing white noise as well as when everything is low I get it when I turn the volume up from the speakers...Do you have the same problem???????
Hey mate, no I haven’t experienced this before. Perhaps you could try i fresh TRS cable from the TR-8 to your interface to see if that’s the issue. Do you get the same noise without the Rack?
Thanks ed, great video. Really appreciate the clear explanation. I m gonna have to think about if this setup is useful to me. Because i really like using the sequencer on the tr-8 itself but indeed it needs a lot of tending to. I was also daydreaming about how useful it would be to use tr-8 as a midi controller for samples from ableton drum rack. Or maybe even both so sequencing on push 2 using samples from ableton and using tr-8 faders and controls! Alright i m getting ahead of myself.
Robin V yeah tr8 for all my drums but I’ll always layer it with some samples too. Extra claps, percussion and a couple of top loops. I’ve linked my samples I use in the description if you’re interested :)
hi, it's fascinating, your music can be heard very well, by the way if I wanted to connect my tr-8s and my push having an apogee duet, how could I configure it in the same way as you, since my duet doesn´t have for midi cable only usb, please and thank you!! (:
I tried it with my TR-8s directly connected to the PC via USB MIDI, it works pretty much the same way. All you need to do is in the Ext. Instrument "MIDI To", rather than select your audio interface select the TR-8S. As a sidenote, because this drove me nuts for about an hour: In the Drum Rack chains make sure you can see both Receive Note and Play Note - for some strange reason, my Play Note was 2 octaves higher than the Receive Note, so not C1 but C3, and hence the BD on the TR-8s wasn't triggered. I've set it to C1 and voila! :)
Genious!!! could you send midi from ableton to each channel of the TR8 and have the TR8 send audio to the ableton on individual channels for later recording and editing?
Hi mate it’s a good question. This is possible over USB with the TR-8 selected as an audio interface. But to be honest, I don’t recommend it, the USB introduces loads of latency and you’ll be beating your head up against the wall!
hey, exactly what i was looking for but your adg doesnt work, idk maybe i have live 9 thats why, can you give me an idea on how to set it up manually, i dont have a midi out of my interface its connected via usb, tr8 i mean, I have it running via a normal midi channel sending midi to tr8, but your way is much more organized. thanks anyway, ill keep trying!
Hey man. Thanks for checking the video out. There are a few things different about our set ups and this can easily be done with Live 9 also. The biggest thing that will help you out is take that USB cable and throw it away, and never look back. Grab yourself a 5 Pin MiDI cable exactly how I show in my video. I can’t stress this enough. It’s a little hard to explain how to set up the rack from scratch. There is a video on Abletons RU-vid page about setting up a drum machine. It’s very similar to mine. Good luck!
I interested is it big difference between ableton native drum rack 808 and roland tr 808 sounds. What benefit to buy roland's hardware except cpu saving
@@mredrollo hmmm tasty... For building live sets with synth support from ableton, and maybe routing those synths through tr8s input for adding some fx... Nice and fresh tutorials, thank u so much!!
Yeah true. In my experience the interface built into the TR-8 is no where near as powerful/reliable as an independent audio interface over a MIDI cable. But yeah, totally doable :)
I did exactly like you but nothing's happen when i press the pads of the drum rack, i see the light on of the midi out of my audio interface, and when i play on the tr8 the sound is going out of my speakers. I tryed also without the USB cable, but i can't synchronise my tr8 with ableton, do you have an issue for that mate, thank's in advance!
Yes, out of my audio interface (komplete audio 6) to the input of the tr-8. I watched your video 10 times 😭 Perhaps it's a driver problem or something like this, I'll try again from the beginning tonight
@@alexiscahn1679 perhaps check what MIDI channel your tr-8 is set to receive midi. By default I think it’s MIDI channel 10 but it can be changed! So look up the MIDI implementation chart or manual on how to check/change the MIDI receive channel.
Yeah I did that already also. I putted back the USB cable on the tr8, now I got all the midi witness on in the drum rack when I instant play on my tr-8, so everything's OK, but when I push the pads from ableton, no sound come out 😠 thanks you anyway for your time man, I appreciate and follow for sure
If I understand correctly you'd like to run Traktor and Ableton Live together and be able to use my Push2 for Traktor2 mapping and the Live step sequencer on Push? Ahhh in short, no not really. You can switch between the mapping and Live using the User/Live mode but the mapping LED's don't carry across. You would have to re-load the .tsi file every time you switched view. I hope that helps.
Hey dude, thanks for this amazing help! I'm using the tr8s and everything works perfectly but when I want to playback my recordings from the tr8s the volume depends to the actual setting of the faders on the tr8s. SO when I remove for example the tr8s and want to play it back there is no sound at all on the track. Do you have any advice? cheers :)
Hey mate, glad it’s working for you. For recording I always set up a separate audio track to take the input from the TR-8 MIDI channel. The set up I show in the video is perfect for live play back and performance but if you wanted to capture that then use a separate audio track. Hope that helps. I had another question about this recently so maybe I’ll do a follow up video :)

Hey, thank you! I have't had experience trying to use Push 2 dawlessly. It is just a MIDI controller so there would be for sure some possibilities, but quite sure to be better solutions out there.
Great video thanks for that ! I also use Push2...say 30 % swing in the push, do you use it mostly for your tracks? Or do you rather use a certain one from the groove pool which is comparable to it ? ...or is it most sensible to use the swing of Push2?
Thanks mate. I always use a swing from Live’s Grooves and adjust the timing in the groove pool yeah. Swing on push is nice and convenient but not as flexible as using one of the Lives grooves :)
@@neveoney7865 I always use the most intense MPC swing. I think it’s MPC 16 Swing 72 and then adjust the Timing amount to taste. Usually i end up somewhere between 20%-50% depending on the BPM of my track and just the overall feel. More intense swings seem to work better for slower tracks. Hope that helps :)
