I have a way to get the benefit of both at the same time. Using any external sequencer, I usually create a sequence I like, then have an Elektron device send transport to the sequencer and record the sequence into Elektron devices (DG2, Syntakt). Once I have the sequence in the Elektron, I P-lock things. I haven’t tried this yet but you can take this a step further by using trig-less P-Lock (shift click triger in record mode) to have the parameters change and then trigger note and gate using the external sequencer - this way benefiting from both and you can even change parameters on the fly. Perhaps even using control all and then on the DG2 configure control all.
This still requires setting up all of the CC messages and the sequence in advance to control the Elektrons. I write my sequences live on stage so it doesn't work. If you want to set up all of the CC message numbers in advance you do have control over a few parameters live, but you can't parameter lock anything still. Thanks for watching
I love your channel, there's not enough people doing improvised techno. Elektron gear is great for doing sound design on the fly and jamming out to but it's cumbersome when I comes to sequencing on the fly. I almost bought an oxi one, but ended up getting the torso t1 instead. If I were writing tracks I would've bought the oxi hands down, but for live techno I'd recommend the torso. It might not have all the features that the oxi has but you get knob per function and theres zero menu diving. For the type of stuff you're doing I'd highly recommend you check it out.
It would be lovely, for future video's, to get a more detailed closeup from the device you're using at the moment. Well explained though, but it would be cool to follow along on the unit itself.
Great stuff! Quick question, are you able to successfully plock trigless trigs while generating notes/trigs from the oxi? For example, im using the oxi for notes/trigs but the trigless plocks on the elektron arent working on my elektrons unless the notes/trigs are generated from the sequencer of the elektron. It seems like the midi in doesnt work with internal plocks. Hoping Elektron adds a new setting where I can receive midi notes but they are ignored when im recording plocks in as well.
I set all my oscillators to a known spot (usually all the way down) and I tune using the offset control on the OXI. This way if I bump one in performance I can just go all the way down and it's back in tune. Thanks for watching!
I just checked on mine and it doesn't quantize to scale. it does 4 note jumps to more quickly get to notes (kind of like an active jump). I'm pretty sure I have the most recent update. Please double check and let me know. Thanks for watching!
You and Ezbot are my favourite educators for all things Techno/Electronica Eric. Great vlog - quite intrigued by the OXI now (I purchased the Syntakt off the back of your reviews).
@SURCOlive It'd still be pretty swell to just choose a sound and bang out some chords. I'd really prefer actual polyphony because I can play chords and I write pretty melodic stuff. I just sucks to have the extra step of having to record then it's not as versatile with articulation and such. Elektron aren't cheap but it's the best value in our niche, hands down, so it's not a deal breaker. But a digital synth in 2024 could have a lil of paraphony as a treat.
