I would like to know the exact process of lithium extraction from Jadarite. Some say that is different than usual because Jadarite is a unique mineral. No one talks about it.
@GreggtheArtivist

Hi, thanks for watching. Great question. Its not a short response so bear with me... Traditional lithium extraction usually involves either the mining of lithium-containing rock, or the extraction of lithium-containing salts from underground brine reservoirs. For example, in Canada, lithium producers use an open-pit mine process to extract ore which contains lithium carbonate. Mining jadarite is more difficult because of its special composition of both Lithium and Boron in it. Mining will need to be done underground and requires a special process to get the useful elements out. Worth noting: the extraction process for jadarite is still being developed and tested. A prototype jadarite processing plant has been constructed by scientists from Serbia, Australia, and the USA, and is currently being tested in Melbourne. The plant aims to process the ore into lithium carbonate and boric acid. These underground mining methods involving a combination of cut and fill, and bench stoping. Cut-and-fill mining is a method used in underground mining. In this method, the ore is removed in a series of horizontal drifting slices. When each slice is removed, the space (also known as a stope) is filled with waste materials. Whereas, bench stoping, is a type of mining where the long axis of the stope is along (or parallel) to the strike of the orebody. Mostly this method is use for Gold, silver and Cooper mining. Then, the chemical procedure to process jadarite is being developed at Rio Tinto’s Technical Development Centre in Bundoora, Australia. In summary: the main differences between mining jadarite and traditional lithium sources are the unique chemical composition of jadarite, the underground mining methods used for jadarite extraction (in development) and a new chemical procedure to process jadarite (in development). These factors contribute to the complexity and difficulty of mining jadarite compared to traditional lithium sources. Plus, there’s always a higher risk with new methods. Hope this answers you question well.

It was nice to hear outside perspective, but I would like to add one point. Corruption is high in Serbia, an my personal fear and belief is that mininig Jadarite and conveting it to usable lithium/boron will only line pockets of the few, and leave this part of country devestad for centuries. I truly don't see a benefit to the country as a whole in the long run (other then few hundred/thousand jobs)

Thanks for watching and sharing. I’ve heard your fear from a lot of people. And corruption mixed with the likes of Rio Tinto I fear only means disaster. I wouldn’t trust Rio Tinto under any circumstances.

Lithium is extracted from jadarit using concentrated sulphuric acid at >90 degrees Celsius, leaving tonnes of toxic deposits that have to be stored somewhere. The Jadar river valley is already prone to flooding. Even small leaks can have devastating effects. And Serbia doesn't even have substantial amounts of jadarit. The most Li can be found at the border of the Czech Republic and Germany but they don't dare mine there because they know the environmental impact would be dire. Australians mine Li at their own soil but the processing is done in China, again because they don't want devastation in their own country. Meanwhile, a new sodium chloride battery is on the horizon while the prices for Li dropped by 80% since 2020. This is pure corporate greed.

Don't worry about toxic deposit. There is plan to put 2 millimeter fabric to secure it. (end of sarcasm), but it is really their story about 2mm fabric that should secure it. Of course it will be teared with first step of machinery on it. Anyway. There will no be digging!!!

I have no problem with Lithium mining. I have a problem with Rio Tinto, and also, as Serbia has copper, car factories, and used to have electronics industry, so Serbia should have most of the industry in Serbia. And keep most of the profit for itself.

Thanks for watching and committing. I agree, Lihium mining isn’t great, but it will happen. As an Australian, I speak for many Australians when I say, don’t trust Rio Tinto. I think Serbia has to, and will, mine the lithium. I just hope the government doesn’t get caught up making a quick buck, and a bad deal for the country. I also hope they look for a more reputable mining organisation with a good track record of environmental concerns.

@@GreggtheArtivist He had gold and copper mine in Bor, east Serbia. It managed to be unprofitable under public ownership. It was sold to Chinese ZiJin, and now, Bor is the most polluted city. City has a rail line, but Chinese simply use trucks to transport ore and destroy all roads in area. And since everyone in city works in something mine related, and pay is 2x national average, everyone keeps their mouth shut. Worst of all all, life expectancy in area is just 60 years, while minimum for pension is 65. My wife is from there, and she can not stop talking how much district heating is great there, so nobody has a reason to go outside...

Hello, just watched your video as lithium and RT case is reopened in my homeland Serbia. First, people need to understand that since 2000. Serbia is semi-colony of the west and all our gouvernmants and politicans since then are just western pupets. If you walk on Serbian streets and randomly ask 10 people about lithium mining and RT - minimun 8 (if not 9) will be strongly against it, and 1 restrained. Back in 2021. curent gouvernment wass scared and suprised by massive protests and overall rejection by people about lithium and yes they did stopped it (paused it) but immidiately started working quetly untill last cople of months when they bring it back on all bells. You explained perfectly what lithium mining does to nature and envirionment. I think most, if not all, lithium mines around the world are in not so much populated places in country side...it will increase our gdp, open new jobs etc, BUT, we do not need all money of the world if we will polution our god given still unpolutioned nature to our descendants. Secondly, whole situation must be observed geopoliticaly. EU wants our lithium to be theirs, because cutting off their addiction to Chinese lithium. It will be very very very problematic if we endure and do not allow mining of it. We can expect everything from wounded beast (that west hegemony curently is beacuse indisputable end of its domination around world). At the end, batlle is not over and we must and will do everything we can to save our land and nature for our kids. P.S. great video, i wait update of it :)

Hi. Thanks for watching the video and thanks for your comments. Super interesting and you raise some very important points. Particularly EU’s wants and the geopolitical situation. I really hope to have an updated video soon. Just trying to coordinate some people in Serbia to participate. Stay tuned and in the meantime it’s vital we get this information to as many people as possible beyond Serbia!!

Hi, thank you for sharing. I think you did a great job of explaining the situation and the arguments of both sides. I appreciate that you used reliable sources and presented the facts in a clear and balanced way. I also liked how you used graphics and animations to illustrate your points and make the video more engaging. I learned a lot from your video, such as how Serbia has one of the largest lithium deposits in the world, how lithium is essential for the production of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies, and how Rio Tinto planned to invest billions of dollars in developing a mine near Loznica. I also learned about the environmental and social impacts of the project, such as the potential pollution of water, soil, and air, the displacement of local residents and farmers, and the loss of biodiversity and cultural heritage. I understand why many people in Serbia are opposed to the project and have been protesting for months to stop it. I also understand why some people in Serbia support the project and see it as an opportunity for economic growth and development. I agree with you that Serbia needs to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. I also agree that lithium mining could create jobs, revenues, and exports for Serbia. However, I think that these benefits should not come at the expense of the environment and the well-being of the people. I think that Serbia should follow the principles of sustainable development and ensure that any mining project meets the highest standards of environmental protection, social responsibility, and human rights. I think that the decision of the Serbian government to revoke Rio Tinto’s permits was a wise and courageous one. I hope that this decision will open up a space for dialogue and consultation among all stakeholders, including Rio Tinto, the government, the local communities, the civil society, and the international community. I hope that they can find a solution that respects the interests and aspirations of all parties, while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of Serbia. I also hope that Serbia can continue to pursue its green transition and become a leader in clean energy innovation. Thank you again for making this video and raising awareness about this important issue. I think you have a great talent for creating informative and compelling content. I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future. 😊

Hi, thank you for watching and thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate hearing that you found the video informative. I hope Serbia can work with a partner and benefit in its own development without destroying the environment. Given Rio Tinto's past I am not sure they can be trusted in such projects. Thanks again.

Hi. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Just an explanation to my comment: Serbia has shown a massive rebound (since the late 90’s) over the past decade. However officially based on GDP (which is actually a questionable capitalist measurement tool I agree), at the end of 2023 it still ranked in around position 32 of 44 in Europe. Taking into consideration the low average monthly salary across the country (not just Belgrade or Novi Sad) and the cost of say a washing machine or fridge or car, which is the same as in wealthier nations such as Germany / France - the everyday person fairs worst. But I acknowledge Serbia has huge investments coming into the country which shows an overall upward trend. Yes, Germany does have Lithium ( and just to add here it ranks the strongest economy in Europe). I find it unacceptable that they, the US, the UK are all supporting the lithium mining in Serbia. Not to mention on populated areas and fertile lands that actually has never been done before. I truly hope there is a way to stop it. I hope to be making a follow up video in the coming weeks as this is old from last year. I’m currently speaking with organisers of recent protests there. I think it’s important all of Europe fight this mining. Thanks again.
