Serbian Field Marshal Stepa Stepanovic I WHO DID WHAT IN WW1?

Serbia's turbulent history of the late 19th and early 20th century created some hard-boiled military leaders to the front lines of World War 1. One of these was Stepa Stepanovic - but he was not just hard boiled, he also stood with his country throughout the entire war which included the Serbian Exodus to Korfu.

There is an anecdote about him and one of his majors. As Stepa was a professor at the academy, during an exam one officer stated that in case of a war, Austria Hungry would advance from west, over Drina river. Stepa thought that they would advance from the north and he failed the young officer, denying him higher rank. When in 1914 Austria Hungary really advanced from west, a young officer met with Stepa and said: "See general, Austrians are advancing from west, over Drina". Stepa: "Yes, and?!" Officer: "Well, that is the same thing I said on the exam and you failed me. And here they are, advancing over Drina." Stepa: "Well then, they will have it the same as you on the exam." He then went on to win the Battle of Cer. After the war, about pensions Indy talked about - when he received his first pension, he returned a huge part of it while yelling at the postman: "What do those dumbheads in Belgrade think, wasting budget money like that?! We'll go bankrupt!".

Based on an anecdote. Anecdote could or could not be true - that is why it is an anecdote (and I specifically mentioned that) and not a true story per se.
@Wustenfuchs109
@Wustenfuchs109 7 лет назад
No, he attacked from the completely opposite direction that army did not expect. A-H main push was over Drina, in the west. Serbian High Command thought that the main advance would come from the north over Sava and Danube. The capital was in the north as well as large plains where you can easily fight and advance. The road Potiorek chose was the least favorable one, through dense forests and over large hills and mountains. And when you advance with large formations and heavy artillery, that is the worst terrain for you. But Serbs did not prepare to defend that region. Something like French not preparing in Ardennes in WWII. But due to the terrain difficulties A-H faced, two Serbian armies had the time to reorganize and redeploy to the west and beat them. No one expected them to come over Drina, because both Bosnia and that that part of Serbia are cliffs, mountains, hills, forests and rivers while the north was a nice open ground, very good for attack and bad for defense.
@Blazo_Djurovic
@Blazo_Djurovic 7 лет назад
It can not be denied that we were helped a lot in 1914 by Potiorek being a fucking idiot. While we would have been a tough nut to crack anyway, simply because we were the only ones with real battle expirienceof modern war, it would have been considerably harder to turn back the numerically and materially superior Austrian forces if somebody actually competent was in charge.
@rossfisher1843

You are right Theo but its peculiar for us Serbs that when you break our army and occupy our lands the war does not end it just enters the second phase. That is and always will be our doctrine, as a Serb you cant just surrender because its literaly ingrained in our minds from birth to grave that to stop fighting means to be a slave again and nobody will allow that to happen again.

I recall reading as teenager that in percentage terms,Serbia had the highest casualties of all the combatants during WW1. Given that the French population actually contracted after the war,the devastation in Serbia must have been immense.They only quit fighting when they ran out of men. Whatever the more modern difficulties dealing with an immensely stubborn people, that must not be forgotten.

Impressive. Stepa Stepanovic would have been in his 60's during the war and clearly ripe for retirement but he proved that he was no geriatric fool and seemingly was young in both spirit and mind. Considering what he had at his disposal and the overwhelming odds he faced he certainly did well to say the least. If those sources are correct then he had a mindset quite at odds with the military thinking at the time. No wonder he is so revered among present day Serbs.

My small town is named after him. It was settled in the 1920s by the former soldiers of the Second Serbian Army (which Stepa commanded), and they decided to name the town after him. A delegation of people from the town went out to visit Stepa and ask for his permission; however, Stepanovich was so modest that he told them that he didn't deserve such an honor. The people decided to name the town after him anyway, because they just loved him so much! They named it Vojvoda Stepa, meaning Fieldmarshal Stepa in Serbian language.

For future reference, the letter "š" is pronounced the same as the english "sh" as in "Sherlock". The letter "č" is pronounced "ch" as in "Church", the letter "ć" is pronounced like "č" but softer, there is no english equivalent of that letter that I know of. The letter "đ" is the equivalent of the english "j" but perhaps a bit softer as well, the example being "January". And the letter "ž" can be a bit tough for foreigners since there is no english equivalent. You should pronounce it like the french "je" as in "Je m'appelle Pierre". Hope this helps you Indy or really anyone who wants to say serbian names somewhat correctly. Love from Serbia!

German General, August von Mackensen: The violence of the big and powerful can often be turned against them. The best example that can not be above the small torturing is an example of a small Serbian nation, which put an end to an empire that lasted almost a thousand years, you’re not going to the Italian, Russian, or French front. You are going into battle against a new enemy - dangerous, tough, fearless, and sharp. You are going to the Serbian front and Serbia. Serbs are people who love their freedom, and who will fight to the last man. Be careful this small enemy does not cast a shadow on your glory and compromise your successes.” Kaiser Wilhelm: "New balance was best described by German Emperor Wilhelm II in his telegram to Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand I: “Disgraceful! 62,000 Serbs decided the war!". On 29 September 1918, the German Supreme Army Command informed Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Imperial Chancellor Count Georg von Hertling, that the military situation facing Germany was hopeless." Austria-Hungary managed to lose three battles against someone with substantially lower industrial input and a ten times smaller population and then had to rely on Bulgaria and Germany to bail you out, then proceed to take out its impotent rage on the civilian populace of the land you've occupied, just to end up losing to its resurging army yet again in 1918, and even being invaded and shortly occupied by it.

He was fighting the entire war and survived a lot.. survived all the battles and artillery and stuff.. Survived the albanian mountains and winter and eventually died after he had a slice of bread after reaching Corfu. It seems he didnt have any solid food for a long while and after having a meal he just died. Thats the story my great grandfather told me.. Austro-Hungarians had a huge poll of manpower and bigger industry. Even in Drina battle from September to November of 1914. they exhausted Serbian army purely by attrition. Still Serbs are to be commended because for the whole of 1914. in Balkan campaign they had lost 130.000. soldiers and Austrians lost 330.000. of whome some 50-60.000. were prisoners, who eventually spread typhus to Serbian population. Serbs are a tough nut to crack, tough fighters inspired not only by the will to defend their country but also supported by the experience of previous wars (Turkish 1876-1877 and 1877-1878, Bulgarian 1885. and two Balkan wars from 1912. and 1913.) while Austrians didn't have any experience on the field. Same goes for Serbian officer corps personified in its high command - all of them were extremely experienced and talented commanders. Serbian peasant already endured artillery barrages, he already watched his comrade die on his arms, Serbian peasant already survived close combat of hand to hand melee, while the Austro-Hungarian soldier didn't had that experience.

The real losses (officers and soldiers: killed + died of wounds + died of disease + wounded+ missing in action + captured) for the 1914. are A-H: 256.000 of which about 50.000 are POWs, Serbia: 167.000 but followed right away with 30.000 soldiers killed in a typhus epidemics contracted from sick Austro-Hungarian POWs.

One note about Serbian generals and Stepa in particular. The makeup of the Serbian army class wise was strange. Unlike expected, officers being from the middle and higher classes and solders being he rest, Serbian army was largely an army of farmers and peasants. Stepa himself came from a peasant family that wasn't particularly well off which is why only him out of his four siblings got to go to school to learn to read. In fact one account states that he got his saying of "Take the enemy like the bull by the horns" that he tended to use when telling his troops how to behave in battle, because during his days living with his family he was on some field probably helping guard cattle while it was grazing, when a bull charged and gored him, and only quick intervention by one of his aunts who sewed him up on spot saved his life. Yet despite all of that, he could run rings around most of the much better educated European generals. Similar was with Živoyin Mišić who was a shepard, one of 13 kids. In fact according to some accounts I read those expiriences helped him a lot later during the war since the hills through which Potiorek was ramming his forces were the hills where Misic used to guard cattle as a kid and as such he had personal experience with pretty much every nook and crany on them. Which was why much fun was had by all once Serbs finally got some god damned artillery shells from the French so they could counterattack. Well not all, there were the Austro-Hungarians who certainly weren't having a nice time once the counterattack started.

Absolutely brilliant video. Your whole channel is brilliant really, informed me about so much and busted so many misconceptions- including the many I had learned studying history at GCSE and A-Level. Up until videos like this and those about the early stages of the war I had no idea about any of the horrific fighting in the Balkans nor the incredible struggle Serbia put up. For us it was confined to the periphery as a little nation of no significance and the Balkans overall were only mentioned due to the assassination that helped start the war and Gallipoli.

And one thing people dont know is that France sent wrong calliber of shells which couldnt be used by serbian artilery, so they needed to modify them..

5:45 Serbian Army Chief-of-Staff, Radomir Putnik, was on a medical treatment holiday in Austria-Hungary.... Wait what?! Wasn't the ultimatum sent one month before the war? Shouldn't Radomir be travelling full-speed back home? (he has 4 weeks afterall)

Arcustxt No one month before war was the Assanition. Ultimatum came later.

Arcustxt There was only a 2 day gap between the war and the ultimatum, since the ultimatum demanded that Serbia concedes in 48 hours. Since he was in a rural Austrian spa, he was probably not informed, nor were the locals (there was no internet back in the day ;) )

How often do you hear of world leaders having medical treatments in Switzerland for example? These affairs are very secretive, and patient confidentiality is of utmost priority! It is unlikely that Austrian court was not aware of him being there, but as Indy already mentioned so many times - Austrians were extremely overconfident about the war with Serbia. Also, apprehending an enemy general, getting medical treatment in your country, before the war even starts is kinda dishonorable and a cheap move, Habsburgs would never fall that low, even though they were spoiled inbred shits...

Arcustxt He was deleberately held there. He was mastermind behind Serbian victories during the war, and centenial of his death will be in this may.

Zhivoyin Mishich, his academy colleague is probably even more revered in Serbia among the WW1 commanders, being more dashing a character, but if so Stepa is indeed a close second. The conspiracy to arrest Stepa you mentioned was not such a petty affair as you presented it. It was actually a planned counter-coup against the members of the "Unification or death" (also known as Black Hand) secret society, which was a power behind the scenes at the time not only in the Serbian Army but also politics as a whole (after they murdered king Alexander Obrenovich as you mentioned, IMHO while working for the Russian secret service ). His severity in quelling the rebellion actually had to be restrained and his subsequent rise to the position of the Minister of the Army gave rise to speculations that he secretly had strong ties with or even an important place in the Black Hand, though no proof ever emerged. He himself never commented on the Black Hand or its demise during the Salonika Trials even in his otherwise very observative diary. He was known to be very discrete and conspirative, sometimes too much as before the Battle of Cevrntija (after the battle of Cer) which ended in defeat in part due to his deliberate witholding the order of the High Command he got to follow (attack across Sava into Austria Hungary) and his plan of execution until the last minute from the division commander he chose to execute it due to his fear of intelligence leaks. There are many anecdodes about his modesty after the war, like when he refused to use state provided automobile to give joyrides to his grandchildren, advising them empathically to push their fathers to earn enough to buy their own instead. Also in retirement he did all the house work himself, once an elderly peasant passerby who was not familiar with his face or routine came across him sawing firewood in his house yard and started a conversation with him assuming he was a servant in Stepa's employ, and Stepa played along. His grave is in Cacak graveyard, on site hand picked by him with the tomb monument paid by him and completed while he was still alive. When the stonecutter included shell-shaped bollards inscribed with names of his famous victories to fence the tomb Stepa got angry, but it stayed like that in the end.
