Steffi had Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Gabriela Sabatini and Monica Seles to contend with... I think Serena has had a bit of an easier go. Her biggest rival has been her sister. That said, their Grand Slam records are pretty close. Steffi was more dominant for a shorter period. Serena continues to win titles and surely has a few more in her. It is a tough question. When Serena gets 23 she becomes #1 in my book, but I think there will always be a reasonable argument that Steffi was the greatest ever no matter what Serena does in the future. It is a subjective question.

Here comes the people who KNOW NOTHING... First of all... Serena beat some great players in their primes (Venus, Justine, Sharapova, Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Azarenka and more). Steffi beat Navratilova and Evert when they were out of the prime and towards the end of their careers. Navratilova only won 1-2 slams after Steffi won her first in the late 80's (1987). Navratilova and Evert were at their peaks in the early to mid 80's about time the late 80's came along they were declining fast and Steffi was about to hit her prime.... so I wouldn't say she had to contend with those women because they weren't much of a threat about time she began winning slams, especially when she dominated the 90's. Her biggest threat (Monica Seles) career was cut short due to a stabbing... So in actuality... Serena face more competition throughout her career...

My point is that it is impossible to really rate players from different eras. I think Serena is the best, but there is no way to prove it.

I follow your logic, understood, but in a way that's my point. Most people who attend the GS at least are there to simply to experience the spectacle and just being there. So you can't go on stats alone. It's a travesty that so many people are wasting their time with it when there's always a choice of witnessing real tennis, full of variety, skill, athleticism and more than anything, depth in abundance, something womens tennis has never had. I'd rather watch a futures level tournament than a GS final of two women playing jerky, error strewn tennis.

Ah yes, the argument of an 8 year old. Given that I'm far from being a professional tennis player, that's very likely, yes...but I wasn't talking about myself was I, you complete moron.

The only female players I did enjoy watching were Justine Henin and to a lesser extent Mauresmo. Both had good single handed backhands, esp Henin but there was a certain grace and balance about their games. Serena and many of the girls you see these days rely on trying to use power and just slug it out from the back of the court. No skill, no variety, no athleticism.
