One of the reasons why I love her. Not sure why sharapova is/was the highest earning. That's very confusing. But this was back in 2012 and Serena was just coming back from her injury-induced hiatus. The day she and Venus retire will be a day I shed crocodile tears.

Not sure why Sharapova is the highest earner? She's the highest earner because of her skin color, hair color, body type AND moderate (compared to Serena) success in tennis. These things make her more "marketable" (whatever that BS is supposded to mean).
Serena is the highest earner now, Sharapova was highest earning when one accounts for modeling and advertising 5 years ago. However, things has long changed, the endorsements for Sharapova started decreasing as she kept losing, and fresh faced younger white female tennis players started coming in. More importantly, what they thought would destroy Serena didn't work and they were all forced to acknowledge her great talent. Also, there was Maria's doping scandal...
@B M-Y Not any more. Serena is the top earner since 2016. According to Forbes she's the highest earning remake athlete for the past 3 years. Serena stepped up her business game as well as her tennis game.
I miss this woman already..I know they can't play forever but I just can't get into today's women tennis level compared to the greatness I've seen from the Williams sisters in the past.....

Yes, they all loved to downplay SW even when she was at her dominant level in the sport. In the background you hear one of the commentators speaking of someone who never achieved a portion of titles SW achieved, yet her *W* skin got her the top grossing endorsements outside of tennis. The commentators did her dirty and the companies didn't give her the endorsements she deserved at the time!

There was absolutely NO reason for Chris Evert to bring up Maria Shame-on-pova's name at all. Serena Williams is on the court. Serena Williams is the "top player." Serena Williams is the player who wins without the use of performance enhancing drugs. Serena Williams is the one with her name in the history books among the greats - and arguably the greatest. Yes this was the Final of Wimbledon 2012. She had lost the 2nd set due to errors/nerves. This was the 3rd set and she was centered again which showed by her confident serving :-)
