Tennis legend Serena Williams has once again found herself at the center of scrutiny over her appearance. A video surfaced on social media showing Williams exiting the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Paris with her husband, Alexis Ohanian. While the couple appeared to be enjoying a family vacation away from their Florida home, online reactions quickly turned negative, with many suggesting that Serena has "lost herself."
The video, shared by Vendetta Daily on Instagram, shows Williams dressed in a long black sweater coat with white trim and sandals, holding her cellphone in one hand and a peach-colored Gucci pocketbook in the other. Despite the clip being less than a minute long, it attracted numerous comments critiquing her frizzy hair and scowling expression.
Some commenters speculated about cosmetic surgery, suggesting that unflattering makeup was not to blame for her appearance. "Message to all Black women, leave your bodies and faces alone! Plastic surgery was not created for you," one person wrote. Another added, "Poor thing… whoever worked on her face should get sued… they did a really bad job."
Others focused on her wealth, questioning why someone with an estimated $95 million net worth would look disheveled. "Serena is too rich to be looking like a hobo," one Instagram user commented. Another joked, "She just threw that wig on and said let’s go."
However, not all responses were negative. Some fans defended Williams, suggesting that people should be more compassionate. "Y'all are mean… you never know what people be going through," one fan wrote. Another added, "The greatest tennis player alive and all they think about is her looks."
This isn't the first time Serena has faced criticism over her appearance. In 2023, she shared a story about her eldest daughter, Olympia, outing her for wearing a wig. After receiving a compliment on her hair, the then-5-year-old quickly informed the woman, "It's a wig," much to the amusement of Williams' followers.
The recent backlash comes two months after Serena launched her own makeup line, WYN Beauty. Despite the harsh criticism, her 10-piece vegan and cruelty-free line features a variety of makeup staples, including skin tint, concealer, lip and cheek color, matte and featherweight lipsticks, lip serum, eyebrow pencils, eyeliner, and long-wear, waterproof, and lengthening mascaras. The skin tint alone boasts 36 different shades.
Questions now arise whether people will trust her makeup choices, given the polarized opinions on her own makeup. Regardless, Serena Williams continues to balance her roles as a parent, businesswoman, and athlete, working hard to maintain her fitness and return to her iconic muscular shape and style.
