Thank you WTA for uploading this! Re-watching old Serena matches has me realizing how much her ground strokes have changed (and improved). Her forehand in particular was a lot loopier back then, whereas these days it's much tighter and more reliable.
I remember that my late sister called me to say that this match was on TV. She didn't follow tennis much but knew that these 2 created some exciting, dog-fight tennis when they played!
the best female tennis player is none other than serena williams. I've watched most games she played and have found her opponents struggle throughout the match. she's got the skills, experience and capability to dictate the games!!!
The American crowds were always hostile towards the Williams sisters once they started winning majors. Especially when they played other Americans. It was sad but that’s America. Once the sisters were in their 30’s the American crowds started to appreciate them more at least.
Capriati was considered "inspiring' to many people because she came back after being out for a few years due to arrests for shoplifting and marijuana possession. I don't find her inspiring but that's why a lot of people liked her story. Serena wasn't popular when she was younger because she was often a poor sport. She often failed to give players credit when they beat her. It wasn't until the early 2010s after she came back from an aneurysm that she became popular.
great match but Jennifer became too passive and defensive by 2003 (she was much more aggressive in 2000-2002) ... she relied on her speed and waited for errors at this stage. Still great to see this rivalry!
Serena Williams, the greatest tennis player ever. Great skills, grace, smart, powerful, honest and an amazing human being. The hate she receives fom the crowd only fuels and inspire her to fulfill her destiny to be the greatest tennis and woman athlete in the world.
I am a big fan of Serena. But i would never say that her game is graceful and smart with Serena.She's a more a powerful player and her game is not elegant at all !

I find Capriatti and Navratilova are quite masculine, but nobody ever called them a man🤔! But Serena, athletic, but very feminine, caught some mean he'll on that bs!!!
I couldn't stand Capriati after their 2004 U.S. Open Quarter-finals match. That match really helped usher in the replay shot we have now known as the "challenge" system. Serena was most definitely robbed of that shot (and about two others in the same match that night in Arthur Ashe Stadium). That umpire over-ruled a call that was Most Definitely IN and made it OUT infuriating Serena and the crowd. Ball was clearly IN but the idiotic umpire called it OUT! Capriati ended up winning the match (with a lot of controversy) and was interviewed on court about that call and she said (with a grin on her face): "Well, I've had bad calls on me as well..." A fine example of good sportsman-like conduct.
Capriati retired in 2004. Injuries and the USO drama with Serena spelled an end to her tennis career. Capriati has had problems with the law since the 90s. After she retired, things only got worse including a drug overdose in 2010 and legal issues surrounding an incident with her boyfriend in the mid 10s. In short, despite three GS titles and an Olympic gold medal, Capriati has always been a bit of a mess. People don't seem to miss her as much as other rivals of Serena.
Staci Towery yes, Serena was #1 until August that year. Serena would have held onto it of course had it not been for her knee injury. Serena didn’t sign with Nike until sometime in between the fall of 2003 and spring of 2004

jam talawah Almost all of the WTA had an issue with Venus and Serena. They treated them horrendous. Jennifer was a particularly disgusting piece of crap. She would do some ridiculous things. And even after her career was over she took to social media to spit her venomous hatred of the Williams sisters.

I think her father was the culprit. Had he been more like Oracene and Richard, her career would have been longer, more lucrative and less legal trouble.

I absolutely love Jennifer Capriati. I wish people would give her more credit. She always gave serena a tough match. If Jen had a better serve she would have been more prolific. Miss you Jen

Serena is the GOAT but my heart belongs to Jen. I just love her game from a child star to all the down periods to Champion. She had all the tools Power, endurance, slightly pigeon toed for quickness and speed. When she had her head together she was virtually unstoppable.
