Located literarlly a stones throw from the runway at Melbourne Airport Golf Club, I'll be honest when Damien said we should give it a go I didn't even realise it existed, I had to scurry over to google maps to see for myself.
But sure enough there it is, in amongst the factories and runways is the surprisingly serene golf course, driving in you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd driven out to a country course, its quiet and relaxed, all the things you want before you go destroy that peace on the golf course.
The front nine starts off away from the airport, winding is way through the trees, you'll occasionally get a few planes overhead but for the most part you're in a country surrounding.
One thing you need to bring here is your driving game, there are a lot of trees left and right of the tee, as we found out, if you're going to slice or hook the ball, make sure you do it well enough to land on the next fairway or you'll have a difficult look at the green.
There course is a solid length for the average player, its not long by any stretch but there are some holes that will challenge you, like the par 4 6th hole, at 410 meters long the lenght is enough to challenge most golfers, but it doesn't end there, with a massive left to right sloping fairway you're going to have a difficult long second shot at a green sitting high up near the trees.
The greens and fairways at the Melbourne Airport Golf Club are in fantastic condition, the club pro told us that it rarely floods due to its location, the greens are not overly undulating but they are challenging.
Perhaps the most challenging of all the greens is the par 3 18th hole, at over 170 meters is a challenge to reach, but the green itself is extremely small, walk off with a par here and you are extremley happy.
Conclusion:
What a wonderful surprise the Melbourne Airport Golf Club is, its quiet and peaceful, its challenging and fun, its in great condition and if you are an aviation lover its a real treat, spread the word, invite your friends to a round of golf at the Melbourne Airport.
