What a treasure! My Great Grandfather W C Phillips was a minister in the church of Christ and was good friends with both Alvin and Gracie York. He would have lunch with them after worship service. There have been many great Tennesseean’s throughout our Republics history and Sergeant Alivn York is at the top of the list.

Being in the Church of.Christ my entire life we always emphasized that we had no man made creed. The church’s foundation was the Bible. Yet, because Alvin’s church had no creed “except the Bible” it wasn’t recognized as an established, recognized religion. No, it’s just the one Jesus preached on earth. It was His kingdom that He died for, was buried, then arose to go back to heaven.

The "documentation" of Sgt. Yorks's act of heroism was hastily done by officers who had an agenda that benefitted them as much or more than it did York. There were 16 other men that day with York all of whom who contributed to his success who were not recognized at all.

I was honored to meet Andrew Jackson York and his brother George Herbert Buxton York in 1995 at their father's home in Pall Mall, TN. Both gentlemen told me about their father and shared insights about his life and the example he set for all future generations. I also saw the church that Alvin attended, the cemetery where Alvin and Miss Gracie are buried, as well as the grave of Pastor Pile. One thing that stood out was the quietness and serenity of that area. Absolutely amazing !!!!!!!!

What memories that brings back! I never met his son or grandson (wish I had). One of the favorite chapters of my book (pages 45-51 in the hardcover version)is "Graduating and Going to Work in "Hillbilly" country". I took over the route in the 'Hill' country of Tennessee from C. R. Byrd who was retiring from Greenwald Shoe Co, after many years. C. R. convinced Sgt. York to meet me in the house that that state of Tennessee had given him., even though he was not well at the time. Sgt. York spoke about our great country (nothing about the war) and the importance of educating our youth properly. I always treasured meeting an listening to his old Scottish-English accent which was common in the Sequatchie valley of Tennessee at the time. I am truly saddened as to what is happening to our corrupt educational system today, which does not bode well for the future of our country.

Joan Leslie, at such a young age, starred in two of the greatest patriotic films ever. SERGEANT YORK and YANKEE DOODLE DANDY. You’re not 20 yet and have starred opposite James Cagney and Gary Cooper!! Both films so important in WW II America! Her interviews, if you can find any on here, are wonderful. Gary Cooper was a BIG star. She was nobody. The day they met she didn’t know how to act. “What do I call him? Mr. Cooper? Do I speak if he doesn’t speak to me?” Gary came to her, and took her hand in both his. He smiled down at her and said,”Hiddy Miss Gracie.” All her nervousness disappeared. And wasn’t she beautiful in that film? Loving the movie so much the first time I ever saw it, in a movie theater no less, it was easy to just suspend reality. He was too old for her. But it was Alvin and Gracie. So he was plenty young in my eyes.

My father served in the 2nd Infantry Division artillery in France in WWI. He was 17 when he reached France. He said the American people would never know what they went through over there. The depression actually started in the Plains early, so he went into a recruiting station about three years after the war to rejoin and get a new start. They ran him out, saying he was too young to be in the Army. Imagine... three years after the war. He brought in his discharge and they signed him up. They were iron men in those days. I still have newspaper clippings of the IRS pursuing Sgt. York for some alleged debt he owed the country. This while he lay on his eventual death bed. Funny, you don't hear this gratitude from his country mentioned much.

Unfortunately with all that is going on right now with this 'great reset', Sergeant York and the legacy he left behind will continue to go down like the Titanic as is the whole western way of life, surely the 'end of days'.
