This was Sergei's final amateur performance and in one of his best, he won the freeskate ahead of home town favourite Ondrej Nepela but was unable to gain enough ground to take the title overall.

@@floskate Wikipedia fails again. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_World_Figure_Skating_Championships I do know that he finished 5th in the free skate in Sapporo. Even with a win in the long, I guess it wasn't enough for Sergei. Two questions: 01. Do you think Tim Wood would have won in 1972 if he had stayed? 02. Who was better at figures Wood or Nepala (Nepala edged him in figures in 1970).
The Chetverukhinator's skating was fine, but neither here nor there for me, whatever that means. I liked his skating outfit though. I liked Yuri better, the 3rd place in the free skating. I was wondering what that music was. Didn't care for it that much. It's great that you list it here though because I'm always curious about that type of thing. BTW, I like the Moiseyev Dance Ensemble and saw them in Rio in 1977 at the Maracanãzinho ("Little Maracanã"), an 11,800 seat indoor arena, when our ice show (HOI International) was starting its run a few days later, following them. We got free tickets because we were also "artistes." There were only about 500 people in that whole theater to see these phenomenal dancers. And yet our ice show half-filled it on many nights, getting an audience of about 5,000. Well, in addition to the skating, we had dogs that played soccer with balloons. The problem with big arenas was the spot lights are so far away, they don't light up the costumes or skaters as much as in a small arena. And we played one arena that seated about 400. There the costumes looked wonderful. I mentioned in another comment how as a chorus line skater with HOI in 1977, I got $135/week, and that didn't cover hotels and meals, except sometimes we had a press party or other party where meals were provided. But in spite of that absurdly low pay, the show provided some good perks. We saw a soccer match at the massive Maracanã stadium. We saw the Christ the Redeemer statue, and the view is breathtaking up there. And then we got front row seats to see these Soviet dancers. They were so good, I was glad they were leaving and wouldn't get a chance to see our ice show. As I was leaving the arena, I got stopped by a young person and was asked to autograph their program, and I realized I was being mistaken for a dancer with the troop. I considered signing it Nikita Khrushchev or Trixi Schuba. Trixi Schuba was the nom de plume I used for signing our ice show program, but I just mumbled something about not being one of them. I wouldn't want to risk signing it and then being scooped up by one of their handlers. There were a few guys with that dance troop I probably wouldn't have minded helping find their way to freedom, but only for one night. It's not like I could have afforded to harbor a defecting Soviet dancer and keep him fed on $135/week.
