You have become such a valuable resource for me. I've been sewing a long time and somehow I always learn something new whenever I watch. Today you reminded me to sit down and twiddle those dials. Thank you.

Twiddle! Thank you Nancy. I’m glad! I can’t believe there is so much to learn with sewing. I’m so glad too! I love it! I learned something new today too!

This is, hands down, the best serger info session I've seen yet. Maybe I am just ready for this or maybe you are just good at stuff!! Thank you!

Thanks for the insights: I've never thought about the interactions between tension, cutting width and stitch length. Always learn something from you! If I were on the live chat I would have said, "Maybe your needle screwdriver is stored in the machine!" I tried saying that now, but you didn't hear me!🤪

It is!!! 😆😆😆😆 I did t hear you over my own musings but thanks for yelling anyway!

Thanks again Saremy. I now understand differential feed and tension and stitch length are separate things! I thought they were all related, hence my query in the sesh.

@SewSewLive 3 месяца назад
Nice! And you don’t need the differential so it’s fine if you don’t have it!

Just received my machine and all good. If you want to sew at 1cm seam allowance there are no seam guides? Help please. Sorry to be a pain.

Thank you for this Saremy. I’m still new to the serger (overlocker) & although I’ve had some lessons this has been much better because of your explanations. I really must take the time to sit & fiddle with things but I’m hell bent on just sewing things up that really only need the edges finishing. Having said that, I’ve been following your other tutorials whilst making shorts & jeans & I’ve learned so much already. I’m considering the gild but I’m not sure about how much time I have to commit with working full time & being in a different time zone - UK 🙃. Any advice on that from others would be appreciated 😊. Thanks again. I look forward to the next few days…..

Yes fiddle!! But I understand just using it for what you need too if that’s what you got it for! I have a lot of European and UK members (mostly because I usually stream 3 hours earlier) and my Guild has events at two different times because of this. So the Workshops happen at 10 am pacific on Saturdays which is about 6 pm I think for you. And Pattern Chatter is at a similar time every other month. Some of my most active members are from the UK. But I totally get it! You can always just join (it’s free) and hang out. Check out the Live Chat feed in there. The Brits are chatting in there!

I always remind my students a true Rolled edge stitch pattern as opposed to a narrow wrapped edge is created with a right needle only and the lower looper should be tightened so it can wrap roll and pull the upper looper to the back of the fabric and roll the fabric edge. The lower looper should be a flat line on the back of the fabric and always only shave little hairs off the fabric the edge. You may also need to loosing the upper looper a little to be able to wrap to the back

Thank you! I really don’t use this stitch much! But someone gave me these tips in chat. My old machine did it perfectly! It was beautiful.

Hello Saremy, this stream was a good overview on overlocking settings! Helpfull to refresh these settings. How often do you change the needles on the serger or coverstitch? It seems these needles are more sturdy but they also must get damaged no?
@SewSewLive
@SewSewLive 3 месяца назад
I change my needles for fabrics or if I’ve used them for a few projects. I use the 2 hours of sewing rule (2 hours the needle is in use).

This looks amazing. Definitely going to be watching multiple times. On a separate note, when serging knits, in order for fabric to stretch with serger stitch, do i need to use a ball boont needle, jersey, or is it ok ro use a universal needle?
@SewSewLive
@SewSewLive 3 месяца назад
You need a ball point or stretch needle (they are different and meant for different types of knits) not because it makes it stretchy but it protects the fabric. If you pierce a thread of the knit fabric, you can get a run in your fabric (like hosiery, nylons, stockings, tights-whatever you call them). The ballpoint pushes the fibers aside and prevent the needle from breaking a strand of the knitted fabric.

I woyld like to know how to shake small seams on the serger like 1/8 -1/4"
@SewSewLive
@SewSewLive 3 месяца назад
Yes I did cover this in the first half! It is a combination of your cutting width, tension of the loppers and you can also remove the left needle if you’re using it. But then you’ll not have a seam -just an overcast edge like I explained at the beginning.
