I actually always really loved this song, even though back in the day I was no fan of most Adult Contemporary stuff. Mr. Beato really made me realize how this song subliminally got me hooked from the first listen.
@@paulmoss4378 This is the Rick Beato video he's referring to: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZnRxTW8GxT8.htmlsi=Wu98A4obC_oaUvrK Maybe a bit heavy on music theory, but still an amazing video for those that love music.
I know! I'm tapping into my college music theory chops just trying to make sense out of it all. I know this was recorded by session musicians in the studio. I wonder how many times they stopped and said, "Wait. WHAT?"
I was a professional songwriter in the 80's. I wrote songs for Whitney Houston and many other well known artists. There were some amazing songwriters, producers, musicians and arrangers in the 80's and this song and record is one of my favorites written by legendary songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Writing a great song is one thing, but making a great record is another and required the best of the best musicians, producers and arrangers. With that said, I'd like to give a huge shout out to the studio musicians who played on this record especially the amazing Robbie Buchanan on keyboards who also arranged the song. There were 2 keyboard players in the 80's that were the best at playing on ballads like "Never Gonna Let You Go." David Foster and Robbie Buchanan. They were masters at playing the piano and fender rhodes on a song and often times also arranging the song as was the case with Robbie on "Never Gonna Let You Go." The voicings, the rhythms and the dynamics of playing both piano and fender rhodes on a song and having them compliment each other is an art form and Robbie is a master at it. It's not an easy thing to do and also come up with the arrangement. On this record Robbie is joined by 4 other top studio musicians who played on so many hit songs in the 80's. John Robinson on drums, Nathan East on bass, Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar and Michael Landau who played the guitar solo. I was fortunate to have Robbie play and arrange a song I co-wrote for Melissa Manchester called "Your Place or Mine" produced by the late great Arif Mardin. Robbie is not only a great musician he is a great human being. Shout out also to Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller for the great vocals and of course the legendary Sergio Mendes for recording the song for his album. P.S. Robbie also played keyboards on the classics "Up Where We Belong", "Just Once" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" to name a few. 🎹🔥🎵
RIP Maestro!
Gonna admit Rick Beati brought me here like a lot of you, but i do genuinely remember my parents putting this song on occassionally in the 90's when I was little. Brings back memories of a simpler time!
Same I already know the song but its been in the farthest reachest of my memories. So i have rick to thank for reminding me this beautiful song exists.
Summer of 83, this song was all over the radio. I sang the death out of this song, word for word. I drove my mom and sister nuts. My sister would say “Missy! Will you PLEASE shut up with that damn song!” But it’s still, 38 years later, one of my fav songs!
The song was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil for Dionne Warwick in the early 80s, however, it was also recorded by Sergio Mendes. Barry and Cynthia also wrote other fantastic songs from which I selected Rock and Roll Lullaby, performed by B. J. Thomas and Just Once by James Ingram, two great singers who unfortunately passed away recently. Sergio Braz - Porto Alegre/RS - Brazil
A great artist has died. Mendes died on September 5, 2024, at the age of 83, in a hospital in Los Angeles. He was surrounded by his wife and longtime musical collaborator, Gracinha Leporace. His death was attributed to complications related to Long COVID. May his memory be a blessing.
Another big pop tune with a lot of chord changes and modulations is "After the Love Has Gone" by EW&F. The songwriters are David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin. Beautiful song.
It's such a beautiful and complex song. I didn't read every comment but has anyone mentioned that when the vocalists sing in harmony on the choruses, the male and female vocalists take turns singing the high harmony? This is pretty unusual. In a normal pop tune if the vocals are being sung in harmony by a male/female duo, the female would take the high note. But they take turns! It's particularly evident during the shout chorus at the end of the song that the male vocalist is on top.
Excellent observation, I noticed that the second time around the chorus is singed, the female voice stands out more than the male one, and that contrasts the first run. It's a one of a kind song, back then you needed talent to write and perform these gems, nowadays, unfortunately...you don't need to know about music to make music😢
Not just that. Rick Beato calls this the most complex pop song, and breaks down the chord progressions of the entire song which is real insane. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZnRxTW8GxT8.html&ab_channel=RickBeato
@@MegaMusic1981 JESUS man, You've pinned it down, that is what I AM thingking right now, yOU Are right!!!...When music automation (A.I.) was established, everyone became fascinated, especially the untalented ones, and tried it out only to fiddle with the parameters. Finally, they made garbage chords and garbage tones without realizing it. They were pleased with their beats and melodies. Knowing that they have the financial means to set up a studio and compose their own "what they called a song for God's sake", after all the music industry is saturated with non-sense loop of cheap electronic noise. Music is being mistreated by someone who has no true sense of music, and when power gets into the wrong hands, it can be quite difficult to bear.
So beautiful, so personal … I was a teenager when this first hit the radio and thought it was a great love tune. A few years later, I actually lived it out! I thought I had let the love of my life get away, but we had a second chance after about a year. I took her, loved her, and married her. 27+ years later, I STILL haven't let her go! That fact that is earned the Rick Beato treatment is merely icing on the cake!
One of The most Beautiful Romantic Love Ballad's Ever Written and Sung. One of my Faves for Sure. Classic Masterpiece. Thank You Mr. Mendes So Much!!!❤😊

I watched 90s of rick beato talking about this, then found it, and looked up the chords. This is maybe my favouirite kind of song writing. All the modulations, take forward the emotional impact and drama of this song. It's spectacular
I'll be 55 year's old tomorrow I just got home 🏡 and couldn't help it, but this song catch my heart ❤️, oh soul! 🙏 Classic always the best in all areas of life 🙏, but this is beautiful betweens two people, you find that special someone, don't let go! ❤️❤️
This is my favorite Sergio Mendes song of all time ever since it was first played on the radio since I was a baby back in 1983 and I listened to this throughout childhood. Thank you sir for the wonderful music. Rest easy in Rock & Roll Heaven.
I've always known his music, and the name, but never put a face to the music until now. Rest in Peace and thank you for all the beautiful, timeless music!🙏🌷
Sergio Mendes is a Brazilian with a true international career. Not like some new artists that go to USA, make a live show for 6-15 brazilians and say They have international success.
Lyric: I was as wrong as I could be To let you get away from me I'll regret that move for as long as I'm living But now that I've come to see the light All I wanna do is make things right So just say the word And tell me that I'm forgiven You and me We're gonna be better than we were before I loved you then But now I intend to open up And love you even more This time you can be sure I'm never gonna let you go I'm gonna hold you in my arms forever Gonna try and make up for all the times I hurt you so Gonna hold your body close to mine From this day on We're gonna be together Oh, I swear this time I'm never gonna let you go Looking back now It seems so clear I had it all when you were here Oh, you gave it all And I took it for granted But if there's some feeling left in you Some flicker of love That still shines through Let's talk it out Let's talk about second chances Wait and see It's gonna be sweeter than it was before I gave some then But now I intend to dedicate myself to giving more This time you can be sure I'm never gonna let you go I'm gonna hold you in my arms forever Gonna try and make up for all the times I hurt you so Gonna hold your body close to mine From this day on We're gonna be together Oh, I swear this time I'm never gonna let you go Oh So if you'll just say You want me too I'm never gonna let you go I'm gonna hold you in my arms forever Gonna try and make up for all the times I hurt you so Gonna hold your body close to mine From this day on We're gonna be together Oh, I swear this time I'm never gonna let you go Never gonna let you go Hold you in my arms forever Gonna try and make up for all the times I hurt you so Hold your body close to mine Oh, we're gonna be together Oh, I swear this time I'm never gonna let you go
I was puzzling myself. Interestingly Dionne Warwick sang it too a year earlier but this is the version that I recall from the radio and I don't remember hearing the 1982 versions (also Stevie Woods). It's the duo version that is familiar to me and I never associated it with Sergio Mendes (remembering more the Brasil '66 era which was great!)
Came here at Rick Beato's behest. Hadn't heard this song in ages but remember it well. Had forgotten though about all the modulations, the first of which is a mere :11 into the song and then it continues ad nauseam. Easy song to listen to, but yes, what a bear to learn. Casual listeners have no idea how easy they have it! lol
I was intrigued becuase i came up learning those beautiful 80s Dx7/ chorus rhodes songs, out set was full of them, so I just gave this a whirl… many chords, but if you understand the pattern of the continuous circle of fourths it’s a lot easier learn this in about five minutes ( by ear, I never use charts on stage, because I don’t want to have to depend on reading glasses ) now if I can just get someone to sing it! Lol
@fav21lintaorafael11 I'll give God Only Knows the win for more complex arrangement, but harmonically Never Gonna Let You Go is definitely gonna take the cake.
I'll come back to this in about 10 or 15 years, but married & with my own lovely family & because of this song... Y'all remember this... See y'all in 10 or 15yrs.
