Melvin Rees was an American serial killer known as the "Sex Beast" who committed a series of murders in the late 1950s. His crimes involved the violent murders and assaults of women in the Washington, D.C., area and along the U.S. Route 301 corridor in Virginia and Maryland. His most infamous crime was the murder of the Jackson family in 1959, which included the killing of two young girls, their mother, and their grandmother.
Rees's criminal activities began to unfold when a musician friend accidentally led investigators to evidence linking Rees to the crimes. He was eventually captured in 1960. Upon arrest, Rees confessed to his crimes and was convicted for five murders. He was sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 1995.

Not one of their better episodes. They also treated the psychic Hurkos like he made a contribution to the investigation, but he made a lot of mistakes, too, like leading the police to a garbage man, not jazz musician Rees.

Is a lion evil if it kills 10 other lions? Good and evil is a human concept. We assign it to things we consider anti social. Evil is not useful. We put people in jail to keep them out of society. Been reading about stark weather and I think carol was innocent . She was 14 and him 19 when they started seeing each other , he smothered her , never allowing her to move or breathe without him . She was also interviewed several times without a lawyer or any representation present . The prosecution asked several inappropriate questions and while interviewed she was prompted and pushed to answer how they wanted . They interviewed her for hours without breaks . Also the extreme prejudice against her due to the media was over whelming . They had dismiss several jurors because of it . The trial should have been moved to another city / county . Yet they didn’t and allowed the court to becomed prejudice . Her appeals were denied even when a new law was made that would have freed her . The state decided their prejudice was right and made a new law of their own at the same time so she could not be free . They blamed her for not running away from him during the spree ,but could you ? It’s also important to note they used stark weather as a witness against . He had changed her involvement many times going from not involved to somewhat to fully. He stated he wanted her to go down with him.

While studying philosophy in college, our professor designated Albert Camus’ “The Stranger”, as required reading for the course. And all I have to say about this book is that if you haven’t read it, consider yourself fortunate for not having done so. This book will f**k you up psychologically, at a bare minimum. And possibly turn you into a criminal, and maybe even a murderer, at worst. Regardless, it WILL have a profound effect of some kind on you, and it WILL change you. And from the “who gives a sh*t” trivia file...it also apparently had a significant effect on the mind of Robert Smith, the lead singer for the group “The Cure.” So much so that he wrote a song about the book titled “Killing An Arab”, which appeared on their 1980 album “Boys Don’t Cry.” As well as their 1986 Greatest Hits CD “Staring At The Sea.” Yep, the book f’d him up too. lol

The amount of philosophical rhetoric is annoying. If I had wanted to know about the existentialism of the time I would read a book on it. This sounds like someone who wanted to sound as WOKE as they were then, or wanted to hear themselves sound as smart as the finger clicking beatniks that thought they were all that and the only intelligent people of their time. Good documentary about a killer I had been unfamiliar with. Thank you! Just a little feedback: the context section in the first part of the video (discussion on world history and other killers) got a bit lengthy. Not that I don’t appreciate context, I think it’s generally helpful. But this section got so long I actually had to double check and make sure my device hadn’t randomly switched to some other video. I feel like the most important context information could have been distilled down to like 60-90 seconds, and that would have been better. You didn’t lose me, but you might have lost others who are less nerdy or have less time on their hands 😊

Embedding the serial killer in the historical context of the post Second World War period. These killers are not formed in a vacuum and are very much the product of the society they are from. The impact of WWII on those who survived can not be underestimated and many of the serial killers we are so intrigued by are the product of the horrors of the war and the society that formed afterwards. Really interesting sociological analysis of the serial killer.

0:46 - The culture wasn't "progressing", it was reverting and the Hart-Celler Act of 1965 would be its death-blow.

The '50s were a decade of turmoil and violence? sez who?

Oh yes, just like the UK: much worse than the previous decade and twenty years before that.

@@Dragonblaster1 Violent crime in the 40s was higher than any decade in the 20th century. The 50s had relatively low crime compared to any decade, similar to the 90s so what do you mean?

@@thorstrebla980 Well, there was also that tiny scuffle called World War II. It’s called sarcasm or snarkiness.

@@Dragonblaster1 Oh, gotcha. 👌 Apparently, there are some people who think the 50s were full of turmoil, based on the video, so I thought there might be a wave of negative revisionist history about the 50s afoot.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you don't do your own writing. The left leaning biases are very prevalent. I can't imagine a Romanian asserting some of the things that are in these videos. There are beliefs peppered in each that lead to the kind of governing Romania revolted to escape not all that long ago. If you do your own writing, you should talk to your parents and/or grandparents about the stuff they had to go through before the revolution. Unless you're related to Ceaușescu. If you are, then talk to someone else's relatives…

WILD MAN! I live in Va and regularly drive through a stretch of country byway called Apple Grove, and when they mentioned the family leaving from Apple Grove i thought to myself.... "There's no way its the same place" so i googled Apple Grove Va just to see if there was an actual town or somewhere else in the state and as it would turn out.... its exactly the area im familiar with. Roughly 15 min from my home. What are the odds! 🤯🤯🤯 Especially since this is my 1st video and 1st time here for this channel. Lololol 🤭
