Trend cutter i keep raving about. Yes they support the channel, but it really is that good!!! - amzn.to/3M9d4kJ
Rafters planed and mould removed on a wet day ready for final install. Alot of work in this part fitting them nicely. It would be fairly easy to lob them on and not bother too much about how they looked, but to make a really nice job of it... is an awful lot of work, especially with notching them into the ridge,

"Why should lending a tool to somebody be an inconvenience to you?" Exactly right. Great way of looking at things and I'm sure your mate will be delighted at the condition you returned that morticer to him.

I was really fascinated by the curled grain in the Oak, I've never seen that before. The video was not at all boring and this has been an interesting series, as always. Keep up the good work.

On green oak timbers or outdoors I've used a coat of clear wood preserver usually Sandolin opaque, a solvent based liquid. followed by 2 0r 3 coats of Osmo UV Protection oil Extra 410, (matt). Works a treat, the only down side is the time it takes to apply so many coats and it's important that any blue staining especially is removed beforehand. Oh, and as your applying treatment outdoors you'll need decent weather to allow drying times.

I used osmo uv 2 coats on the last green oak structure I made it keeps the colour pretty good- almost made it look more uniform I thought. The osmo uv was more expensive than the regular so I used it on all top sides and in direct sunlight then the regular on all other surfaces with no visible difference
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 11 месяцев назад
Thanks David, did it not seal the moisture in and cause it to go mouldy under the coating? Really interested in how it turned out
@CreativeCarpentry
@CreativeCarpentry 11 месяцев назад
@@BradshawJoinery no it was perfect- I had sections of mould that had formed on the surface that I planed off too. The mould did not return at all . The project was an orangery , green oak supplier was Iwood and it was a guy there that recommended the osmo to me. I saw it 9 months later doing work for the same client and it all looked good - the sun had faded it a bit even using the uv osmo . I checked there on google maps and it’s still standing 4 years later so I must have done something right 😂

I use Osmo UV 410 too, but I put a base coat of wood preserver on first. I've found that a solvent based preserver gives a better protect base for the Osmo oil.

Ive tried osmo a few times on green oak and semi air dry oak. Right before winter is gonna be tricky, it doesnt go off very well in cold temps, especially on green oak. It stays tacky for ages and doesnt look great. I prefer danish oil but on green oak with a finish on, eventually as the wood dries out it tends to make the finish surface go a bit cloudy.
@CreativeCarpentry
@CreativeCarpentry 11 месяцев назад
I used osmo uv on a project done during summer time . I applied it once everything had been assembled so all the wood had been outside for almost 3 weeks in good weather before getting a coat . It dried no problem and looked good on that occasion. I don’t know how long the oak had been drying before I received it but it was purchased as green .
@gillie-monger3394
@gillie-monger3394 11 месяцев назад
Try applying a base coat of a solvent based preserver before the Osmo. It dries the oil off quicker for some reason.

Great video Ollie! So much work! Even just having to surface everything! And my knives just seem to ‘nick’ then you get those lines :( I’d be doing the plumb cut for fascia / gutter or whatever the plan is for rafter ends in the work shop, now! Those aren’t site friendly cuts to be running a chalk line or anything like that carry on, even with the HSK Work smarter not harder 😜👍🏻
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 11 месяцев назад
Cheers mate, I knew I would.probably be planing them so tried my best not to put them down too much on scaffold boards or the ground but it's tricky on site conditions. They went through a treat to be fair. Just kept gobbling plenty of lube on the bed in a spray bottle. Blades didn't suffer any nicks surprisingly! I really want a spiral cutter block haha

Nice video bud. if anyone has a decent idea on what coat to use that doesn't trap moisture in like he asked. I'd be very glad to find out. I am a green oak framer and a client I am speaking to wants this to happen to their frame. All I know is osmo isn't very good as it seals moisture

oak framer here. My advice is stay away from treating it yourself. any varnish will crack and open. i've seen people get away with using finish stuff internally with relatively little issue but it will crack over time. i'd recommend you don't take any responsibility for it or you'll be going forward and back for the next 5 years doing a lot of scraping and refinishing. if you agree to do it, make sure they know there's no guarantees and you'll have to charge for repeat visits.
