On this model you shouldn't be moving it via the bolt

not 100 percent on that model

check all other pulleys for play and they spin without major resistance. these engines harmonic balancer can get out of round as well, need to look into that just see what else is causing it to have deflection

stuck or damaged pullies , tensioner failure possible

The old one take a knife and cut it.

make sure you are moving the tensioner and not the bolt that mounts into the engine

if you are doing it correctly, and the tensioner isn't springing back it needs to be replaced

the tensioner is a 3/8ths square

Taking off the motor mount looks easy supporting the engine not so much

+Kd Bleim (smkgld) if you have a floor jack very easy just a piece of wood like a chunk of 2x4 under the oil pan and between the jack to just support the engine it will not move much at all

JoeTheAutoGuy It looks as if my 2004 Pontiac Grand AM 3.4 liter V6 has the side engine mount that I need to remove. Thanks for your tip to use a jack to support the engine. I had not figured out how to support the engine until I saw your comment. I guess I will have to finish this project in the morning as it is too late to be rolling jacks around in the driveway tonight. I hate to leave a 14 year old belt on it now that I have the alternator off anyways.
