A Serra do Rio do Rastro é a mais famosa estrada do sul do Brasil, e uma das estradas mais impressionantes do mundo. O trecho da rodovia SC-390 é caracterizado por subidas íngremes, curvas fechadas, e mirantes espetaculares entre penhascos e montanhas. A quase 1500 m acima do nível do mar, ela tem 12 km de concreto armado e sua extensão total é de aproximadamente 23 km. A rodovia SC-438, parte de Tubarão, segue até Lages, unindo as cidades do litoral a Serra Catarinense, ou Planalto Serrano.
Localizada entre as cidades de Lauro Müller (em baixo da serra) e Bom Jardim da Serra (em cima da serra), a Serra do Rio do Rastro era conhecida anteriormente por “Serra do 12”. O trecho é parte da rodovia SC-390 que liga o Planalto Serrano com o Litoral de Santa Catarina. Suas sinuosas curvas ficam no município de Lauro Müller e o Mirante de Observação, em Bom Jardim da Serra.
O mirante localizado no seu topo, a mais de 1460 metros de altitude, proporciona uma vista espetacular da estrada, da Serra do Rastro e da planície abaixo. É um dos cartões postais do estado de Santa Catarina.
O trajeto da serra é repleto de refúgios, onde é possível parar para fotografar. Cada parada revela um ângulo diferente e a rodovia. Nesse trecho é toda pavimentada com concreto. O que oferece a melhor visão das curvas da estrada é o mirante de estrutura de metal, já próximo ao topo.
Quem vem de Bom Jardim pelos campos planos de cima da serra é surpreendido pelo contraste. A estrada do Rio do Rastro começa abruptamente. O desnível entre o Mirante e a planície abaixo, em Lauro Müller, é de 1200 metros.
O melhor horário para visitar o mirante da Serra do Rastro é entre as 11 e 15 horas. Neste horário há menor incidência de neblina e o sol está bem em cima. Em dias com boa visibilidade a vista chega a 100 km de distância.
No topo da serra, até mesmo nos meses de verão o vento é gelado. Imagine então no inverno quando as geadas são frequentes e às vezes até neva. Vá bem agasalhado! Junto ao mirante há um posto de Polícia Rodoviária, restaurante, lanchonete, banheiro e loja de souvenires.

At almost 1500 m above sea level, it has 12 km of reinforced concrete and its total length is approximately 23 km. The SC-438 highway, part of Tubarão, goes to Lages, joining the coastal cities to Serra Catarinense, or Planalto Serrano.

The best time to visit the Serra do Rastro viewpoint is between 11 am and 3 pm. At this time there is less fog and the sun is right overhead. On days with good visibility the view reaches 100 km away.
At the top of the mountain, even in the summer months the wind is freezing. Imagine then in the winter when frosts are frequent and sometimes it even snows. Go well wrapped up! Next to the viewpoint there is a Highway Patrol station, restaurant, cafeteria, bathroom and souvenir shop.
