This is Sersinio (Gerrit), a Surinamese tour guide who I met while doing a doing a tour with Orange Travel to Brownsberg.
While on the trek in Brownsberg, we spoke about Suriname and his heritage, and a few days after the tour we met up in Paramaribo to make this video. He shared his vast knowledge of Suriname's colonial history and the six Maroon tribes they have, among other things related to Suriname.

Quick note: Africans were not chosen over the amerindians because of their strength! Natives were chosen over Africans as slaves in some cases. Like in the Inca territories, where Africans found it imposible to cope in such extreme altitudes. Africans were chosen for many reasons. For example, their familiarity with some of the crops the Europeans wished to trade. Moreover, they were less likely to rebel as the likelihood for survival in what was for them a foreign land was slim as they were faced with all sort of challenges they wernt equipt to face on their own. Again thank you for you video! Just throwing more info for whoever wants it.

This video is soooo informative. Sersinio is AMAZING! I so appreciate this video and can't wait to go to Suriname and do his tour and learn so much more. Thank you so much for sharing. One of the best history lessons I ever had. I'm speechless really and can't really describe what this video has done to me.

Thanks Fina, I really appreciate those words. I was just the vessel for Sersinio to express his knowledge. Even I was suprised to hear what he was saying as this wasn't scripted. If you'd like to get in touch with him at some point just let me know.

Some additional information. They didn't leave the least attractive enslaved people behind on Curacao. But the ones that were too weakened by the transatlantic passage to survive an additional sea trip to other different islands or countries.

Nice history lesson. Do you know how the Ndyuka got their name? Are they also named after a river?
@nigelsim2540
@nigelsim2540 2 года назад
Apparently they settled on the Tapanahony river, so I'm not sure where they name comes from.

NDyuka is derived from the name of the creek Joeka (pronounce Dyoo- Kah) near their initial settlement. They also refer to themselves as Okanisi, or Aukaners (Dutch name) which is derived from the name of the plantation the first group fled from, plantation Auka. Sometimes people like to state that Ndyuka was derived from "Dyu (=Jew) and "Ka"(= poop, or rather the bad word for poop..:-) ). But this simply isn't true. It's also erroneously believed that Aukaner or Okanisi is derived from the word Akan. The Akan are a West African ethnic group.
