The United States military embodies the attributes of servant leadership, including promotion of servanthood, commitment to stewardship, development of character, and long-term employee empowerment. This presentation describes the distinguished military careers of retired Admirals Larry C. Baucom and William McCarthy through the lens of servant leadership. Both admirals served with excellence in a series of responsible organizational and institutional leadership positions, culminating in the command of aircraft carriers.
Servant leadership embodies key leadership attributes, including servanthood, stewardship, character, and employee empowerment. Servanthood promotes the best interests and legitimate needs and interests of key stakeholders. Stewardship is the effective and efficient use of organizational resources. Character is the intentional, systematic, and sustained cultivation of Christian motivation to promote work environment, foster employee growth, and reduce workplace stress and conflict. Employee empowerment focuses on long-term enhancement of employee development.
This presentation provided a synopsis of the empirical and conceptual literature regarding the efficaciousness of the four foundational attributes; highlights the methodology used; provides descriptive analysis of four servant leader attributes for both admirals; and provides a summary and implications of the research. In these troubling times, organizations and institutions require the humble and steady hand of the servant leader.
