I hope everyone enjoys this video and is able to see what a service dog meet up looks like. Dogs are not perfect even highly trained service dogs.

Omg! I have never seen someone train anti theft strategy. That is so cool! I’d love to see how you went about training that. I also loved the conversation with the pet owner haha. Everyone awkwardly waiting for them to move on so they could continue what they were doing. Lol been there done that. I am always the person in the group they pick to talk to too! Another awesome video. Thanks!

I felt the same way while watching. What bothers me about interactions like that is not that they want to learn more, but they immediately discount their dog. They either say ‘my dog could never do that’ or ‘my dog is so stubborn’ or ‘my dog just doesn’t behave well’ when really what they mean is ‘I haven’t spent the time and money to make my dog listen and behave well in public settings’. It irks me cause I think every dog can reach a certain level or obedience and that it is the owners mind set or skill set that keeps them behaving badly.

I can definitely see the benefit of the anti-theft training, but I'm curious how that would work when the handler isn't able to release the dog but the dog really does need to go with someone else (e.g. in the case of a medical emergency where the handler is unconscious/otherwise unable to give the dog any commands and someone else needs to handle the dog temporarily). Are there certain people that she knows she is allowed to go with, or is it for anyone and everyone that isn't you? Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but just curious how it all works, since this is the first I've ever heard of it.
@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 Год назад
That is a good question, I felt the same way when my trainer taught us how to do it. If a friend or family member were with me they know her release command. If I were unconscious and alone she will break a down stay to come help me, and she will most likely follow me if EMS were to take me

@@dallastheservicedoodle7236 Gotcha. Good to know, and makes sense - thanks for explaining. I'll be going through a program (my only feasible option, and I'm still in the application phase), and after watching and reading the explanation, I think it may be something I will train once I get my dog (if none of the programs I'm applying to are able/willing to train it, that is - if they will, I'll have them do it, or at least start it).

I am a service dog handler...kind of new to it honestly, I've had my service dog in training for about 6 months now, and he has done very well. I have never, even before having Apollo, have met another service dog handler. I have met therapy dogs and fake service dogs, but never a real team. That's just something I want to do one day.
@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 3 месяца назад
For me it was a while before I met a real team also. It’s nice to meet real teams even if u just see each other walking in a store bc it’s so rare. But when you make friends and can talk to each other and go on training outings it’s super fun. It’s nice to have people who u can relate to and talk about things with. On instagram you may find many service dog accounts and you can always DM them and make new friends. But if u want to find local people go on face book and see if there’s a service dog group chat for your local area. That’s how I met many of my friends

I just went on Facebook and looked up “(your state) service dog groups” u may find some people near by that u can meet up with. But always be careful when meeting up. For your safety it’s best to bring a friend or family member. And for your dog’s safety keep at a good distance in the beginning. Even Dogs that seem well trained on social media may still be aggressive… u never know

Do you like the saddle bag cape? Does Dallas like it even when there is stuff in it? Is she comfortable when she lays down?
@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 Год назад
I love the cape. It’s very helpful bc I can put her stuff in it rather than stuffing my purse that already has my stuff in it. Dallas is very gear shy so I normally put it on her so far during meet ups bc there is a lot of distraction so she’s not thinking about the cape. She hated the p&l cape but she seems to like this one better if I attach it close to the harness so the cape strap isn’t sitting to far back on her belly

@wolfden8979
@wolfden8979 Год назад
For the anti theft training, is there like a fail safe or something in emergency cases? Like what would happen if u put her in stay but then something happens to u & she doesn't see u. Like if u become unconscious & ambulance takes u, would she know it's ok to leave stay & go with u or the first responders?
@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 Год назад
That’s a good question, and I think there are definitely pros and cons to the anti theft. If u are someone who goes unconscious like that a lot I wouldn’t recommend leaving your dog out of sight. However I do not have those emergencies very often and if I do my body gives me warning signs (symptoms). If I am not feeling well I will not leave from her sight. She will break a down stay if she needs to if she knows I’m in trouble. Most of the time I’m with a friend or family member and they know her release command and she will go with them. And if EMTs were to take me I believe she would not leave my side in an emergency.

How does the anti theft work if the paramedics or someone like that needs to command the pup?
@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 3 месяца назад
I haven’t been in that situation however Dallas will break a down stay to come help me if I were to go unconscious. At that point she will no longer be in a stay and she will come with me if there is not a family member to care for her. If the paramedics are taking me and I am not conscious I know for a fact she will choose to stay by me even if I put her in a stay before an emergency.

@dallastheservicedoodle7236
@dallastheservicedoodle7236 Год назад
First I am sorry that happened to you and your dog. That is a very scary thing to go through. Second I would take a step back from having her work everyday. I would start with socializing again and maybe going on walks outside where u will meet other dogs. Praise her for good behavior and if she barks then put distance between u and the other dog till she stops barking. It might also be good to contact a trainer if the problem doesn’t improve bc service dogs have had to retire early due to attacks. If u got the info from the other handler they should be able to pay for your training bc it was their fault (if it was in a store or the dog was off leash

I suggest watching Upstate Canine academy of the training style fits with you. It has helped my dogs out with understand readying is very bad and that not reacting gets payed heavily. If I doesn’t fit I suggest learning more about reactivity, distance, rewarding good behavior, and possibly re socializing slowly. Also contact a trainer near you that has a training style you agree with. Hope this helps.

You shouldn't put that shirt on the floor of the store, and then in your dogs mouth. Dog saliva contains capnocytophaga, which human saliva does not contain. Capnocytophaga can cause sepsis if gets into the bloodstream. You should not be contaminating anything in the store with dog saliva, out of consideration for the health and safety of other people.
@maclaren8004
@maclaren8004 4 месяца назад
bro what are you on 💀 i promise you no one is going to rub random objects from the store on open wounds, let alone get sepsis from doing so. i don’t think the (very little amount of) dog saliva would be the problem at that point, that would just be idiotic behavior. god forbid a service dog does their job and is able to help their owner with their disabilities 😱
@warondogs8199
@warondogs8199 4 месяца назад
@@maclaren8004 I saw her in this video putting the shirt in the dogs mouth and then putting it back on the rack. Clothes should not be covered with dog saliva, which has many dangerous pathogens in it, including capnocytophaga.
