Our service dogs very favorite doors are automatic doors. She loves to watch them open and for some reason party city has the best electronic doors and they’re right next to Petsmart so I haven’t figure this one out.

As a wheelchair user with a service dog I would love to see how we can go through a door like this...I'm constantly squishing my poor labbie. Great videos very helpful.

Hey Alison! Wheelchair use isn't one of my training specialties so I wouldn't want to give you incorrect info, but I highly recommend Donna Hill's courses on wheelchair use/heeling. I've been taking them myself and they are great!

I would love it if you could do a video on anxiety my dog is great with literally almost everything I throw at her but for some reason she hates being left alone and will get so worked up that it sounds like she’s dying if she can’t see me
@DoggyU

Hey Tiny Falcon! Separation anxiety is actually something some trainers specialize in. I highly recommend reaching out to a trainer with a SA certification.
@robinmccauley1035

My dog has a lot of abandonment anxiety (he's fine if I leave at normal times with normal stuff, but if I take something extra, or had packed clothes he would cry like crazy if I left his sight.) Something I found helpful was that since my dog was crate trained I could put him in there and cover it with a blanket so he couldn't see I what I was doing. He also initially had some separation anxiety, and one of the things I did with him was putting up a dog gate, specifically between my kitchen and my living room. That allowed him to get used to us being separated while he could still see me. I would also give him something to focus on when I left, like a Kong with treats, or even just throwing a treat he had to run and grab, since I found he felt better if he didn't actually see me exit. That also has the benefit of creating a positive association with you leaving. I also know that some dogs do better with consistency (my dog feels better if I've grabbed my backpack so he knows I'm leaving) but for others it's better if it (to them) comes out of nowhere, so giving them a distraction while you get ready to leave could be helpful too.
@tinyfalcon13
@tinyfalcon13 11 месяцев назад
@@robinmccauley1035 the puppy gate is a great idea that I didn't think of thank you! I do the other stuff already she does great with the crate just not if she's out of it and thinks I'm leaving her she was a stray before me and possibly a puppy mill dog before that based on some of her behavior and our dog trainers thoughts. So I understand why she has it just wanna fix it for her

I love your videos! 🫶 So excited I found your channel! I am a dog trainer enthusiast 😅 and train our fosters. I admire how well service dogs are trained and realize that rescues cannot achieve the same level in a few weeks, but a lot of the tips you teach are so helpful. My main question is how long do you keep training for focus/keep eyes on you? At what point do you stop giving treats or slowly get them off treats? I am confused on this topic. Thank you!
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 10 месяцев назад
Hey Alesia! Welcome to the channel! I'm so glad you're here! The short question about focus/eye contact is: ALWAYS. I am always working to improve focus and potentially eye contact around distractions. The food question is a bit more complicated because it depends a lot on the dog, but I want to move from a continuous rate of reinforcement (one behavior, one cookie) to a variable reinforcement schedule pretty quickly. So once they understand the behavior in 10 different locations I may reward best efforts, or every other rep, or sometimes with food, sometimes with a toy, sometimes with praise or pets, and sometimes with access to something they want, like sniffing. That being said, I never stop reinforcing behavior. I am always looking for other ways to reinforce the behavior, even if it isn't with food. Does my dog love to sniff light poles? Well I might have them heel 10 steps of really nice focused heeling, and then tell them "go sniff" and let them sniff the pole. Or if they love to run in the yard, I may ask them to wait while I open the door, then release them into the yard. And there's some things I never stop using food rewards for. For instance, if my food motivated dog recalls off a deer or a bear, I am going to heavily reinforce every time with a really amazing treat like a fish skin or leftover steak. Hope that helps!

My hero! It was something I'd certainly never thought of before, until Summer showed me the door could be a problem. We found our own way through. It never occurred to me other teams would have encountered a problem as well. Next dog I get, I will try this maneuver. TFS! Side note: I noticed you mentioned PSDP in one of your videos. I was surprised to see the group that taught me everything I know mentioned. How'd you learn about them? Are you a member, too? I'm forever recommending them as a starting off place. ❤

I came across them when I was looking for a public access test example alternative to the ADI test which no longer has public-facing access. I'm not a member but they seem like a great org!

@@holisticleedriven8532 ahh yes! ADI removed their PAT from their website several years ago. But yes, no personal experience. Just browsing their website and it looks like they have great resources! I love orgs that make training resources accessible to those that need them!

only revolving doors i come across is automatic moving ones. so it be a modification or find manual ones to train for them
@DoggyU

Definitely would want to train them on a manual ones. Electric is potentially unsafe.

For swing doors that open on the left/dog's side, I just switch the leash to my right hand if it's not clipped to my waist, hold the door open with my left arm straight out to the side, and keep the dog in heel position, pivoting left to face the door once we are through, to make sure the dog is clear before releasing the door. If it's an accessible door that holds itself open, I still put my hand on the door to make sure it doesn't close before we are through. Realize that may not be best for everyone, but it's another option. The spin move is cool, though! Sadly, we aren't allowed to do revolving doors with the puppies I raise, because you can't really control people coming behind you that may push the door faster than you're ready for, I assume.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 11 месяцев назад
Definitely another option! As for revolving doors, yeah - there is definitely some inherent risk of that happening. I would never choose to use a revolving door vs. another door. But it's important my dogs/clients know how to do them if the situation presents.

May I ask what your opinion is on female service dogs working in heat?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 11 месяцев назад
This is really dog/person dependent. I don't have a big opinion on this really. But I don't inherently have a problem with it in regards to others as long as you stay away from other teams as much as possible, wear panties, etc. But it would really depend on how the particular dog is feeling and their experience of being in heat. I've met dogs that you can't even tell they are in heat (nearly no personality change), while others are very affected by it.
