For all of you with a major bee in your bonnet about the way I rotated the tires, sorry for offending you. The Subaru factory service manual for the 2011 says to move the front tires straight back to the rear, then cross the rear tires to the front. If you have directional tires rotate them front to rear. Crossing the front and rear , as I did, caused no damage what so ever. If you don't like that I crossed them front and rear, don't worry, it doesn't actually affect you or your vehicle in any way.
@thesparkster
@thesparkster 5 лет назад
I think the maximum variation of Subaru tires is 3/32nd of an inch. I found this out when my daughter caught a nail in her tire and a new tire was 5/32 of an inch more than the rest of the tires. I had to replace all four of them. If the one or more tires is way off from the rest, it can tear up the all-wheel drive system. Folks should periodically verify the tread depth of their tires to make sure they are within that variance. Project Farm did a comparison of the top 16 synthetic oils: Amsoil first, Pennzoil Platinum second. Mobile1 was near the bottom of the pack, not even getting out of the first round of tests.

When I change the oil filter on my Legacy I loosen it first then I get an awl and pop a hole in the bottom of the filter and let the oil drain out. Much cleaner and less oil on the exhaust. Great video.

A guy I worked with did this, its honestly pointless unless you are this afraid of getting a little dirty. Best case scenario you do this with big diesel filters.
@7239Matteo
@7239Matteo 5 лет назад
LowResRevolution it’s not about being afraid of getting dirty. It’s a common sense practice. It keeps the oil off the exhaust system that would otherwise run down the exhaust pipe and burn off and smoke for a few days.

I've found the best way to determine a wheel bearing noise (after you've heard it) get it in the air and grab ahold of the spring and spin (by hand) each tire. You can feel the vibration from a bad wheel bearing.

Sure is, easiest way to remember the EJ series and F series engines are the timing covers. All EJ's have a timing belt so they have that black plastic cover, but the F series dont have a timing belt anymore and have timing chains so they are behind the silver metal timing cover.

I hate this oil filter design. What I eventually did on my 2011 outback was loosen the filter slightly. then I punched a hole in the middle of the filter with a scribe tool or sharp punch and let it drain before removing it. No more mess on the exhaust.

Yeah the manifold trap filter design is brutal I have a 2012 outback 6mt , I will have to try this method with the punch n drain The way have always done it is to use newspaper and tape to block off the manifold. Tedious but works. Lol

changed my oil for the first time today thanks to this vid. also installed the fumoto valve. my gf thought it was hot. apparently if you want to impress your spouse change your own oil. also, it's pretty annoying that the OEM filter and the OG Roki (Mazda) filters are different sizes and require different cap wrenches. just what I need, two oil cap sockets hogging space in the garage.

Good stuff. At the risk of nit-picking, I would wipe off the oil pan surface around the drain plug *before* re-installing the plug, to make sure no gunk is left under the new drain plug gasket. Watching the oil filter being replaced makes me appreciate having the oil filter up top on the new FAs. Regarding 'high-mileage' oil, my understanding is that the main difference is an additive that causes rubber seals to swell slightly, thus reducing minor oil leaks on high mileage engines. If there are no leaking seals, then no need for 'high-mileage' oil.
@MrSubaru1387

I do. Just hard to get it 100% when oil is still dripping from the drain. A little oil between the crush washer and pan won't cause a leak or concern.

After you break the oil filter loose, just turn it a little bit until the oil starts trickling down the side of the filter. Let it drain until it slows down and then turn it a little more and drain until it's just dripping. Then go ahead and take the filter off by lowering straight down. I never get more than a drop or two on the exhaust as long as I pull my hand down carefully. Making sure everything has cooled off before doing this really helps!

I've heard "high mileage" or "synthetic blend" oils are nonsense, but I switched to Quaker State full synthetic on my 1998 OB and never had any leaks or oil consumption issues (until the head gaskets went) for about 12 years and got up to 225K before round 2 of the head gasket issues (didn't know about the beefier gaskets you've mentioned). I also had piston slap on that since the get go, and I was advised against redoing the head gaskets again and just getting a newer car. I now use Quaker State full synthetic it in my 2010 2.5i Premium OB and have put about 60k on the car from the original 108k when I got it, still no issues. I swear by Quaker State paired with my Purolator Boss filter.

Looks like Advance Auto Parts has replaced Carquest oil with Fram oil. Looking into this, it looks like it's the same exact oil but with a different label. Like, that's the entirety of the difference; the label. Also, Fram is now owned by Trico? Does that mean that the filters are better quality now? I just purchased a 2013 2.5 liter Outback, 6 -speed manual, with 113k miles, anything that I should look for? looks like all of the routine maintenance as done by the prior owner. Is the 6 speed a more reliable transmission than the CVT?
@colechapman6976
@colechapman6976 3 года назад
well, traditionally I think the word on the streets was that the manual is more reliable, but honestly so long as the engine is a 2.5 liter and not the 2.0 one they are considered reliable. My family has had lots of Subarus over the years and our CVTs were pretty darn reliable. Also, my own personal car, a 2012 Outback limited is at 92,000 miles with a 2.5i engine and a CVT transmission and has not been terribly unreliable at all. Still ticking away solidly so I think the CVT is fine too. Lots of CVT Outbacks I've seen have reached 130-160,000 miles online so it might not last 200,000 or 250,000 or something crazy like Toyotas but once your car hits 180,000 or 150,000 I would consider selling it anyways. It's good that you bought the 2013 model year since 2012 and above they stopped having those head gasket issues.

@@MrSubaru1387 Wow.. thanks for that! You might consider doing a video on that with your beautiful silver Crossie! Would be a great DIY vid for Crossie members! Btwn u and I ... I really appreciate your knowledge, skills, and abilities. I'd love to come down and intern with you if the opportunity ever comes up. I really miss SC anyway, I am not unfamiliar with wrenching (built 3 stock cars from the ground up). I still have a great friend from the USN down there I'd love to see. Give it some thought at the least. I am over 50 but I'm a total car guy and wouldn't at all mind learning from a young buck like yourself.

How do you make sure the car is level when doing diff fluid change?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 лет назад
Eyeballing it level on the jackstands is normally close enough.
@cajunaggie9815
@cajunaggie9815 5 лет назад
Two things...... Is the brake dust on the front wheels normal or a bit excessive? With that mileage, has the brake fluid been flushed yet? Also, what are your thoughts on the torque limiting extensions for impact wrenches? Have you used them before? They are made of twisted metal strips that will "unwind" at a specified torque to prevent over-tightening using an impact wrench. I use a torque wrench now, but just curious what you think of them. Thanks. Torque Sticks............ www.amazon.com/Neiko-02450A-Limiting-Extension-5-Piece/dp/B000IX3BSM
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 лет назад
It's excessive. My brother is a slob and hasn't washed the car since he bought it 2 years ago. Torque sticks get you close. They're not to replace a torque wrench for final torque on a lug nut.
@rogerhassell3212
@rogerhassell3212 5 лет назад
One note about torque sticks that doesn't get talked about much. It's still possible to over-torque the lug nuts over the stick's marked rating if you use an excessively high-powered impact wrench or run it at an impact-per-minute frequency higher than the stick's resonant frequency. The stick needs sufficient time to rebound from each impact, thus dissipating the excess torque energy. Resonant frequencies are generally not documented, so start at your lowest ipm setting and check the resulting torque before going all gorilla mode. As MrSubaru1387 suggests above, I believe it's best practice not to depend on torque sticks alone, but to use them to 'get close but not over' and then use a torque wrench for final tightening.

My coolant was changed in my 2013 outback 3.6 but they didnt use Subaru super coolant is was bright green coolant not the blueish u used.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 лет назад
The green is fine. There's no chemical reactivity in mixing them. All that happens is that the service interval goes from 100k mile replacement to 36k mile replacement.
