If you guys like Brazilian music, there was a whole movement in the 60s and 70s called Tropicalio. It produced some very rich music that I think is comparable to the Beatles (as a Beatles fan). Los Novos Baianos and Os Mutantes are a good place to start (the latter was praised by Lennon, not sure about the former).
Yes! The "Tropicalia" movement was very inspired by "The Sgt. Peppers" album. I would also recommend the album "Panis Et Circensis". There you can listen to a lot of Tropicalia artists.
Who the heck cares about the Beatles and what they praise or don't? Tropicalia artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil are many leagues above The Beatles in artistic quality.
I was ecstatic when a friend showed me Sessa, I've been really into Jorge Ben Jor, Antonio Carlos Jobin, and Joao Gilberto for a while now and to hear something contemporary is just absolutely amazing
Saw him live a couple years back opening for Explosions In The Sky when they were here in Oakland and I was completely blown away, I’ve been trying to find him ever since and am beyond grateful I came across his music again.
First time hearing his music on Spotify I thought he was an artist during the Tropicalismo movement in the 60s, but then i discovered he is active now! Made me kind of believe in the music of today again. Truly a great artist
This afghan blanket sure can play a mean tune! For real though this is some eye opening stuff and I'm really glad that KEXP is helping give platform to more than just U.S. and European artists. Him and Juana Molina should do a song together sometime!
Well, I'll comment in portuguese, our lovely and musical language... Demais Sessa! Grande figura e músico, as músicas e o disco todo estão incriveis. Belíssima apresentação, percussa finissima e as garotas estão maravilhosas (beijo Monique!). Representou! Jun (from Sao Paulo City, Brazil).
I clicked on this video because I like KEXP, but mainly because of the thumbnail picture of amazing granny-square cardigan the singer is wearing. However, I adore the music from this band and the singer's voice is so lovely.
Pienso lo mismo! Por qué quiere que cante en inglés? El portugués tiene una sonoridad hermosa que creo imposible traducir. Think the same! Why he wants to sing on english? Besides brazilian portuguese has a lovely sonority thats impossible to translate.
ffffffffffffffff making me think of all my Brazilian friends that I got to know in Eira. Beautiful peops from the South America's! Snazzy! Jazzy! Vibes! Bossa nova! 🇧🇷 🎵☺️
Very attractive and smooth in the ear of course, but I was thinking during the first song, which is kinda minimalist even beyond the traditional format, that it would be cool if the soundscape contained a small contrast of some kind to give it a hint of innovation or an edge. Like an occasional syncopated snare drum or something in the percussion.
The Brazilians around here were just discussing, in Brazilian portuguese, that he's not innovative, and sounds just like a lot of other Brazilian artists form the 60s and 70s... We also think that KEXP could bring some other artists from nowadays that sounds more original, less caricatural, and needs more visibility to keep going.
@@msmunhoz Well, I listened to the album a little after this, and on there you can actually find a crashing, sharp snare like you'll hear in the carnival. Have a listen and see what you think. Personally I think it sounded more interesting at least, even if it's not quite what I was looking for.
The Luthier certainly built the guitar with this in mind, but also the miking i think, check it out. Those big drums are called Surdos, essential for playing samba
my guess is that they mixed some preamp distortion onto the channel w/ that guitar mic. just the fact that they have that nice vintage-ey reverb on the backup vox gives me the impression that other tweaks are hidden throughout the mix (vocal compression too)
@@MonoYMonoRecords oh that's a good point. Definitely something I will consider when mixing acoustic now. Am I trippen or are like one or two of his strings metal?
