couldn't even match perfect

I've always read it as "Good and evil matched perfect (it's a great romance)," so i heard it that way. Ive always felt like it wasn't the most "deep" or obfuscated of elliott's lyrics though. And now I know maybe why I've always thought of that line specifically. You may have it right! Im gonna have to listen more and see.. though I've definitely seen the way I wrote it quoted countless times in the past...I like yours better for sure.

It sounds too upbeat compared to the original.

@@Warrogue1 uh, have you heard the original song though? Or the original artist for that matter?

@@BlamingBuddha Yes, I have. I know some of his fans don't believe that any covers can do his songs justice, but I like how Seth and Jessica do them. They are not trying to duplicate Elliott, which of course would be impossible, but they probably brought new listeners to his work. I saw them on their tour of their joint album and thought the performance was beautiful. There are many videos of that tour on youtube.

@@Warrogue1 oh, I completely agree that this is a great cover still, and a nice version of the song. Just saw this comment again while coming back to listen to this yet again. So I definitely enjoy it, and I'm not saying that nobody is allowed to do elliott Smith song's or that a covers of his suck. I feel this version and the rest of Seth Avett and Jessica Mayfield's covers *a lot* more accessible listening-wise and easier on the ears than elliott's. Im glad they're honoring him and trying to put him on the map more. I was just saying in my comment, that specifically this cover sounded a lil upbeat compared to the original. Nothing wrong with that, just not as "heavy" listening imo. Which can be good! For example today while I'm cleaning it sounded like a good song for the mood (still not the most upbeat song *whatsoever.* I recognize this.) Just elliott's version makes me want to sit and deeply think. So I'm actually commending them for their own style of their song because I think the key to *any* good cover is to do it as an original version, adding in your own unique "flair." Seth and Jessica did this great while still following the original structure of the song. It can just be a slight bit jarring is all for listener's more accustomed to Elliott Smith's style of music. But not too much, and nothing bad at all! I love that they're bringing Elliott's music to a different audience that might not have otherwise listened. Though the more important thing is the music, not the popularity. But they're both unique versions that are great songs for slightly different vibes/emotions/moods imo. Just always never forget that it was an Elliott Smith original, so some fans may find Elliott's version more "pure" as he wrote it himself about himself and his feelings. Edit: Damn man, sorry for typing so much lol

Ethan Longoria I listened to Elliot Smith's version ....... very good! I prefer this one though ....... I think it went with the show. Either way that scene, especially for what is considered a light comedy, REALLY punched people in the face. I'm a lifelong Stern fan and love Artie. Although fiction, that scene seemed SO incredibly real to those of us that have been touched by Heroin addiction. That song and it's lyrics took it to an entirely different level.

@EthanJLongoria
@EthanJLongoria 3 года назад
@@scorpio9736 Die-hard fan here too. There's nothing new or unique about this cover. It sounds like every other Folk-indie song that has airy female vocal leads, simple acoustic guitar on the melody, and harmonies that add nothing to the artistic integrity of the song other than to build-up faux tension. It's an overused musical cliche. And it's sad to see Elliott Smith's music commercialized this way.
