Here I show how we braced up our 41’ long room-in-attic trusses on our garage rebuild. We set 32 trusses over a 60’ length in 7 hours with some big crane assistance. Special thanks to my wife for running the tag line, and to Jeremy and Oliver for working the wall ends.

I'm a retired master carpenter and have some comments. The way you spaced and temp braced your trusses and braced the gables was thorough and well done. Kuddos. I would have done some things to spend less money and saved a lot of time myself but, I got tons of experience. When you showed what you did to span where you had no sheathing structure I was actually impressed. You did it right, although there are many ways to skin a cat. Stairs and stairwells are tricky and you went with one technique that I can see will work fine for you. For this video you get a pat on the back. If you are going to lay out the stairs yourself reply to this comment and I will send you some links to address the layout, principals, how to force the labor and how to do the math. Looks to me that you know how to ask for sage advice, understand, read and take directions. That's important. Stairs are hard.

Hello Steve- thank you very much for the comment. I truly appreciate your words and the experience that they come from. By the time this comment was received the stairs were already in. I had some good help laying it out, so I feel confident in them. Cutting all those stringers is no fun! I continue to work away on this project with no end on sight yet. Roof, soffit, fascia and siding are all done, so at least it’s enclosed. Thanks again!

getting ready to do this in two weeks. gonna follow what you did. Did you install the collar tie bracing when you set the trusses?
@NashwaukSteve
@NashwaukSteve 3 месяца назад
Hey, I hope it goes well for you! Those were some beasts for us to set, but it’s all good now. Yes, the collar tie bracing went in within a couple days of setting the trusses, I believe. I used 16’ 2x4’s in two full length runs, end to end. That was specified on the print. Let me know how yours goes!

Thanks. Mine are 28’ with 12/12 pitch so quite not as beastly.

Not very many attic trusses video out there, thank you! What is the pitch of your roof?

Hi Michael- yeah I looked for videos all over before setting these. Not a whole lot out there. My roof is 8/12 pitch. I have another video out there on how I used roof jacks to shingle it. I’m glad that part is over!

How long was the crane onsite? Average time to place each truss? Thanks for sharing
@NashwaukSteve
@NashwaukSteve Год назад
Hello- the crane charged me for 7 hours, with about one hour being travel to and from my site. 6 hour setting job. It was 10-15 minutes per truss on average, with the first and last taking longer than the rest. Thanks for watching!

Are Attic trusses designed to expand and contract or can you connect an attic truss to a load and non-load bearing wall
@NashwaukSteve
@NashwaukSteve Месяц назад
Good question! It is my understanding that they will move seasonally, so when attaching non-load bearing walls, I used truss clips. It’s little L-shaped bracket that is slotted where the truss attaches. This allows the truss to move while still keeping the wall below plumb. If you have a designed load bearing wall below your trusses, I think you could hard fasten that. Thanks for watching!

Nice video! For your garage door headers, what size beam did you need? Did it require engineering or how did you determine the size? Also did you end up adding hangers to the 2x8s you install between the girder trusses? Thanks!
@NashwaukSteve
@NashwaukSteve Год назад
Hi Evan Weaver- thanks for watching! I used double LVL’s, 14” deep for my headers. I hired a local building supply company’s draftsman to do my initial draw-up and that’s the beams he specified. As for my 2x8 cross braces, no, I didn’t use hangers. I gave them each about 6 sinker nails, toe-nailed in. That was a budget decision. God bless!

great video thank you, do you recall the cost per attic truss?, im looking at almost the same dimensions as you,!

@NashwaukSteve 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment! I just looked it up, each truss was around $650. The crane was $1400 and delivery was $1600. I bought these when lumber was ridiculously high, so hopefully yours are cheaper. Good luck!

thank you, that's the only thing I can think that the price was probably 2-3 times. Really appreciate the insight! Do you recall the company you ordered these through? @@NashwaukSteve

Yes, I ordered through Menards, who uses a manufacturer in Wisconsin. Honestly, for the price I paid, I was not impressed with the quality. A number of gang nails were misplaced and the trusses were not perfectly identical. I worked through it, but it made for extra work, certainly.

really appreciate the info, for the price I wouldn't be either but sure you made it work, thanks again Steve @@NashwaukSteve
