Simple but very effective on the right shot. We show you how to find the black and white point in your images and then using the curve adjustment layer you can set the white and black point in that image.
The result is quite impressive.
These tutorials are meant to be fun, short, easy to following tips and tricks. Be sure to watch this tutorial in high resolution.

Absolutely love this technique for setting black and white points. I went to art school and still can't remember the great production they put me through to set my points. I looked at my notes and got a big headache, so I came looking and found you! God bless you!! Cheers!

Expose for detail in the shadows, detail in the highlights. There are exceptions, of course, but for beginners, it’s a good place to start.

Very cool on how to adjust the black and whites! I too would like to know about it on PS elements. I'll keep an eye out for that! Your teaching style is great! I enjoy every chance I get to learn from you!,

Thanks Colleen, that is sweet of you. I'm glad that people are enjoying it. Time is more and more valuable these days with my busy schedule so if people are watching then I will spend the time to make these.

I think it's easer know (probably because it's a new feature, and you did this video four years ago): when using eyedroppers from the adjustment layer (curves, levels), holding Alt the critical black and white areas become visible and easy to select. Anyway, cool tutorial. Thanks

Colors are nicer after, but the contrast is higher, thus information is lost...

Great tutorial. Very clear. One question, I now have a curves layers that display the "1" and "2", how do I hide these numbers. Thanks again.

hello, sorry for the delay, I didn't see your message earlier. All you have to do is right click on the 1 point and delete it. Same for the 2 point, not needed to do it in any particular order either. Hope this helps. we also have a new channel, photonerds university.

Hi, nice video! How can I save my work after finishing? When I try to add contrast, exposure, etc., the photoshop sliders move but have no effect? Thanks, William

I'm not 100% sure I understand exactly what is happening but would love to help you if you could explain a little more. Also, we have moved our channel. Check out Photonerds University instead of this channel. Thanks in advance.

Which version of PS are you using? My threshold layer (PS3) doesn't appear with the "yin-yang" symbol and I couldn't get this to work.

I was using Photoshop CC in this tutorial. It is possible that with the older versions (PS3 in your case) that this trick might not work. It has been awhile since I've used something other than Photoshop CC so I don't remember. Also, note that my channel has changed. We are Photonerds University now in case you were looking for more recent content.

Hi Adam, Thank you for the information. I work on PSE. Is there a color sampler tool on PSE?
@adamfurtado
@adamfurtado 10 лет назад
Hello Kathy, first, you're welcome! (smile) I don't believe this trick nor the color sampler tool are available in Photoshop Elements. HOWEVER, there are always work arounds in Ps Elements which is why I teach both. I will take a look at how we can achieve these results in Ps Elements and create a video that might work for you. Keep an eye out for that. :-)

Do you do this with all the photos that you like and want to edited?
@adamfurtado
@adamfurtado 10 лет назад
I do this on every photo just about. The reason is because it only takes a few seconds to create and IF for some reason I do not like the results I can simply delete the Curves adjustment layer and go from there. I am not stuck with this. For that reason, why not give it a try and see what you get. :-)

How do you get rid of the sample points when you're finished with the process?
@mynameistimur

Hover over that point and press down alt (you will see the scissors) and click on the point you want to delete

There is a much easier way in camera raw and levels (by selecting the options that show the black or white that are crushed)

If you know and understand the trick you are referencing others try, then you also know and understand within Photoshop there are many ways to achieve the same result. This is one way of doing things. I'd also keep in mind that this video was posted in 2014 and many new ways of doing things have been introduced that may not have been available back in the day. For more up-to-date tutorials vistit our Photonerds University Channel.

A one step method with the same result than a 2-3 steps method will always be better, no offense at all.

I see below this does not work in Photoshop elements. I was trying the tutorial and could not find the eye dropper control point. I will wait for your video for PS Elements.

Hey Chris, I will be doing videos on some tricks for Photoshop Elements as well and will find a creative alternative for this I'm sure. Keep posted for that. Any suggests you have on other things are also welcome. I want these videos to be as informative as I can for everyone.
