In this video I set a few canine traps with a little under a foot of snow on the ground. There are a lot of ways to set in these conditions, I just show one style here. I make a couple of dirt hole sets, a flat set, and a blind set on a trail. Hope it's useful!

I am starting trapping for the first stone this year… like most newbs to trapping I started with canines. I’ve had a lot of problems with pull outs- I assume for bedding issues? And two really frustrating losses of grey fox (trapping around the den) one flat set and one blind set in a fox trail by a urine post. Both were caught for some time as there was torn weeds in a defined circle and blood. Both were caught in duke 650s (one was a wax dirt set- the other a plastic bag set- both over 3lb pan tension). Any idea of what my problem is?

I’d like to try the ziplock method, along with the triangle of death set, to keep the trap dry, & to keep it from freezing up, without the need for waxed dirt. Problem now, is with sub zero temps, & around a foot of snow, plus deep drifts, I’m not seeing any tracks, where I can trap. Thinking of setting out bait, to see if I draw any interest. The ground is frozen like concrete too, so getting into it will be tough!

Great video, very informative. Tell me, what is 'wax dirt'?

You don't think it might be better to make your bait hole first so you can set your trap bed where you can actually dig the hole?

Hey I’m just being lazy by not looking myself... does Maine limit the chain length and center swivel only? I’m just over in VT and those are added restrictions in the zones we have Lynx. These zones are also is the only zones with exclusion devices for body grips.

yes on center swivel, no on chain length. we also have jaw spread restrictions, cannot use drags, cannot have objects that would cause entanglement in the catch circle, need three swivel points. i

I couldn't find where VT is required to use exclusion devices. all i see is that bodygrips need to be 5 feet off the ground or underwater. maybe I'm missing something?

Sorry for the lengthy reply. (Cut and paste) This became law Jan 1, 2014. It’s only in WMU E i. In the water, or; ii. Within a Canada lynx exclusion device as described below and as depicted in Diagram 1: a. the trap jaws shall be completely within the device; b. the trap springs may extend outside of device through openings no larger than 7.5" wide by 1.5" high; c. the device shall not have an opening greater than 6" by 8"; d. the opening shall not be directly in front of the trap but shall instead be either on the top or side of the device; e. the trap set within the device shall be a minimum of 18" from the closest edge of the opening to the trap; f. there shall be at least two attachment points for each side of the device where there is a joint or where panels come together; g. the device shall be constructed of wood or of wire mesh of 16 gauge or less wire (.05" diameter wire or greater) and having a mesh size with openings no greater than 1.5" X 1.5" or 1" X 2".

@@guthrieperry5077 Thank you! That's interesting. Fairly similar to ours.

Why don’t you use power snares?
@doug6780

No snares are legal in Maine - no drags either in the area he lives

I’m curious on the best way to respond to those who question the ethical soundness to predator trapping? It is easy to explain when it comes to beavers as they cause issues for many landowners but predators are more tricky to explain.

Hey Ryan, that's a good question. I've discussed it a little bit in the podcast, but am planning a more in depth discussion on it sometime soon.

They eat alot of turkey flock, small game, bird game and deer fawn. It's all about balance. Sadly they shut down pa grouse late season. Game is regulated, that's what anti hunters don't understand. Conservation is a good thing

Hey Jeremiah. I‘m looking for a good (scientific) book on beavers. Any recommendations for me?

Robert Hodgson's "Book of the Beaver" is a really good resource. It's not a trapping book - focused on attempts to farm beaver in the early days. Lots on beaver biology, habits, etc.

I read a book years ago titled my beaver colony.it was written by the man who re- introduced beavers in Norway in the 1950s his life’s work was studying beavers.I can’t remember but I think his name was Olson.
