A guide to show you how to work out the equal spacing of stair spindles.
NOTE Example is for up 1 metre base rail length so we just knock off 200 mm from initial gap between newel posts.
For a 2 metre base rail take off 400 mm from the initial measurement and 600 mm for a 3 metre base rail etc.
Likewise for on the rake 300 mm for a metre, 600 mm for 2 metre etc.
Taking off these initial figures from the gap between newels is just a way of quickly finding the probable number of spindles required and works 90% of the time.
If you then find the gap between spindles is to big or to small when you have done the initial calculation its only a case of adding or reducing the number of spindles by 1 normally.
Remember UK Building Regulations ask for a maximum gap of 99 mm.

Absolutely fantastic instructional video. Any apprentice who watches this video and uses this method will never know how lucky they are in terms of the massive amount of head scratching and frustration they are not going to have to endure. Extremely informative and very well explained and visually well presented

You don't need me to tell you this works. In a nutshell, spindles done and calculations are spot on. No app required. Many thanks.

You don't explain why you knock off 200 or 300 ml off the lengths. Then the rest doesn't make sense. but thanks

Can you tell me how you know it’s 200-300mm deducted per meter?? I know it has no relevance to the final outcome but understanding what causes the loss of that initial 200-300mm per metre would be helpful knowledge

200 mm per m. 40mm spindle . 200 divided by 40 =5 that's how i understand it, obviously spindles come in different sizes ,,atb

@@markburlison9993 What if spindle is 41mm? Do I take away 205mm per metre?
@markburlison9993
@markburlison9993 Год назад
@@SkemeKOS this guys video is excellent old ways are the best,, watching this again the 200mm is deducted to give approx amount of spindles required say 8 spindles per meter depending on spindle that is,1000 minus 200 =800 so 8 spindles . no more than a100mm gap between spindles. 8x 41=328 1000- 328=672 672 divided by 9= 74mm spacing 8 spindles 9 spaces, to increase the gap deduct a spindle and do the same calculation 7 spindles would be 89 mm and so on,. place spindles together like on the video is the fool proof way and measure what you have left then divide by 9 as you have 8 spindles and so on, experiment, have fun

Used this method worked like a charm , thank you , can you tell me what your formula is for calculating the rake spacing for over a meter please .
@RVBuilding
@RVBuilding 3 года назад
Hi Luke Double it for every metre basically. Measure rake knock off 300mm for 1st metre. For 2 metres take off 600mm so if the base rail was 1.5 metres for example take off 450 mm etc. And therefor a 3 metre base rail will be 900mm to knock off the length of the base rail etc. This will give you a rough guide on the number of spindles and normally your within 1 spindle but all depends on whether they are square or turned. Just do a quick sum and either add or takeaway a spindle to get the correct spacing to meet Regs

DIY guy here, about to do my first staircase build. Just wondering why you take away 200mm and 300mm, and how to know how much to take away. EDIT : Never mind, I've just read the description.
@xxyxnxwxaxx9724
@xxyxnxwxaxx9724 Год назад
So go to the nearest 100 obviously 380 you go to 400 witch means 4 spindles, as the centres you need maximum 100 centres, and on victorian spindles the profile is diffrent so you take the 100 mill gap from the largest gap so in some place you'll have a 100mm gap and maybe in places you'll get 80mm gap.
@peterhoare5503
@peterhoare5503 4 года назад
ok dont judge me but I'm having problems with the maths, my rake base rail is 3000 minus 300 = 2700 suggesting 27 spindles. as I had pulled this stair apart I knew this was to many it was only 19 spindles before although badly fitted with uneven spacing. I didnt stack the spindles to get the remaining gap but measured the spindle width across the cut angle and multiplied by the number of spindles this gave me a good even distribution. so where am I going wrong cause if id gone and bought 27 spindles I would have been miffed.

Thank you for pointing this out. The model I used was under a metre. There is a rule for every additional metre which I failed to mention in the video and will edit it for others.

Really good video but only thing I'm confused about is on the rake 103mm surely is wrong I thought the spacing needs to be less than 99mm
@RVBuilding
@RVBuilding Год назад
Measuring 103 on the rake angle will leave around 90mm between spindles measured horizontally
