Pouring old oil from one car into another car creeps me out for some reason, like the new car will get an automotive STD or something! Then I remembered an old guy in my neighborhood back in the 1970s who collected everyone's used motor oil to put in his beater, which burned and leaked oil so fast that he couldn't afford to keep putting new oil in it.

I had an uncle who use to drain oil for customers and way back when the oil only had 500-1000 miles he would save it and change his oil with that., back then nobody had money.

I use the decently brownish motor oil out of my Wife's Caravan in my step daughter's 2016 Mini since it uses a quart about every 500 miles and she won't pay me back. Well , I did. It blew a head gasket about a month ago and I've been debating on what to do with it. 240K miles and original timing chain. I might fix it this winter if I get real bored and there's no metal in the pan. But I doubt it. Maybe it blew a gasket because it had herpes of the cylinder head from used motor oil?

These are my favorite videos. Slightly passive aggressive, and rightfully so, proving a point to people that have no business telling a man with all your experience how to conduct his business in his shop. Shame on you fools that do, by the way. All in all, I think this was a proper response. And, Kenny, I applaud you for keeping your cool and explaining this with your normally calm and informative tone. I dont think my response would have been as level headed as yours. Good job!

In the Navy, as a diesel engine mechanic, we recycled used motor oil all the time. The system heated it, ran it thru a centrifuge then a set of chngable oil filters and reused it. So pouring that used oil in the engine didn't hurt a thing......

There is a video showing exactly what happens. Guy overfilles the engine with crazy amount of oil. He cut out a square from the engine block and covered it with a piece of plexiglass. oil pan was also made from plexiglass. It's an awesome video. I tried to post the link but I do not see my reply.

My opinion is this is absolutely fine for a short distance. I test drove a car one time down the highway for a long drive 30 miles 75 mph and low oil pressure light came on. Car was overfilled by 4 quarts. 4.5 quart capacity for reference. Long drive aerates the oil as shown in the garage 54 video and will eventually cause low oil pressure. Car did not smoke or overheat. After I test drove the car I found the video curious to see what happened inside the engine. I did not buy the car. Didnt trust how long he drove the car like that. Looked and saw mouse chewed oil level sensor wires and the guy said "Just kept adding oil" light still comes on. This is a true story. I would think every engine would act different depending on when the oil started to aerate and how long it was driven but that video was crazy the oil amount added was higher than the crankshaft and it didn't blow out a seal and it just started to run rough.

I had a Dodge 1500 with a V6 engine. Went to the dealer and got my oil changed. Didn’t think much about it. By I noticed my oil meter pointer going back and forth. I stopped into a quick oil change store and asked them to take out 2 quarts of oil from the pan. Suddenly my oil meter was stable and worked correctly. Found out the dealer put in enough oil for a V8. And I got no charge for removing the extra oil. Kenny I watch your RU-vid all the time. Thanks for the show.

You will always get haters and those that doute with no reason too. I know that if you overfill your oil it will ingest that oil through the positive crankcase ventilation system and will smoke horribly. Some people enjoy complaining too much. It's like they get a thrill out of getting a rise out of you. Your better off not to let them get to you. Anyone who works on cars knows this can happen.

Anyone who believes adding twice the amount of motor oil will not hurt a motor has never seen the inside of a car motor. There is limited space inside of a motor with parts moving around. Continued over filling would result in blown seals, oil foaming, clogged intake channels, clogged catalytic converters and just oil all over! Don't do it!

Kenny, Why do the INTELLIGENT engineers design the engine to hold partial quarts of oil????? My 5.9 Cummins holds 3 gallons with filter. My 2005 Camry holds 5 quarts with filter. MY 2021 HIGHLANDER HOLDS 5.8 QUARTS. That’s 5 qts-24 oz. WHY can’t they just make the oil pan 1/4” deeper to take 6 qts even. It’s so frustrating.

Was his name Rudy, we went out on break, and he kept pumping oil into the engine till it came out of the valve cover. What a waste of oil, he just drained oil into the standup barrel and put the correct amount in, and boy did that car smoke, even with the correct amount in it.

Kenny, I had a hunch you would do a follow up video. The only time I had a issue with over filling the oil was with a VW bug 1641 cc. I put 4 quarts instead of 3 and the engine shook. Drained back to 3 and all was good. My neighbor on the other hand was not so lucky. His wife thought she was adding water to the radiator, but instead it was the 710 cap. Engine was running while she added water, then it locked up. It ended up washing the cylinders and never recovered. It was a KIA, so no big loss. Keep up the great videos.

Funny, working at Pepsi back in the 80's wrenchin', I went up front to grab 1 of the many sales depts small isuzu picks up they used, to service it.....Well I get it all done, and drive it around the block to park it in the lot. It started smoking, and losing power??? WTF? THEN, I remembered maybe I put too much oil? Checked and yup dipstick was high...I hurried back to the shop to drain out some oil. I had gotten distracted and pulled off of it halfway thru to do something else, for about hour or so. Forgetting I had refilled the oil before the "distraction" lol lesson learnt

My brother's wife drove her 2008 3.4 Equinox over 100 miles on the expressway with 4 quarts overfill. I change their oil for them and when she got home from her road trip, I checked the dip stick before draining the oil. I was amazed how high the oil was on the dip stick. So, I drained some oil until it was on the top full part of the hash mark. Like I said, I took out four quarts to get the oil level where it was supposed to be. Lucky for her, the engine was undamaged. I was surprised the crank seals weren't damaged and leaking from all the extra oil in the crankcase. That was 8 or so months ago and the engine is still running ok. Her excuse for the over fill was it was dark, and she couldn't see the dip stick very good and she kept adding oil until she felt it was on the full mark. My brother and his wife are lucky the engine survived that blunder. The 3.4 engine holds 4 and 1/2 quarts with the filter and I just don't understand how the engine could run with a gallon of extra oil in the crank case. Crazy stuff, for sure.

The Honda 3.5 V6 is pretty bullet proof. Perhaps you might get Catalytic Converter issues if you burnt too much oil through them for an extended amount of time. You did a correct Diagnosis and Repair. The only thing I could of suggest is run a can of CRC INTAKE VALVE AND TURBO CLEANER through the PVC hose into the manifold. This would help out to clean any excess vapor oil that might had flooded into the manifold. Everything else is a non issue.

I use to use my race car oil in my daily driver because at an 1/8th mile at a time it had minimal milage and it was $13.00 a quart. My daily went 400,000 + miles. 6.0 LS engine.

Oil chamges are so blown up and a bunch of blah blah blah. I buy the cheapest oil I can find and run atleat 10,000 miles between chamges and I never have engine issues. 2015 Traverse 3.6 just rolled 300,000 miles and a 02 Grand prix 3800 with 429,000 miles all on cheap regular oil

We had one towed in from a rental company that wouldn’t start. Knowing how they operate first thing I did was see if any oil in it well I couldn’t tell where the level was. 🙀 so opened the filler cap and there was the oil pool right up to the cap. So did an oil change and luckily for them it ran fine. 🤦

Kenny I watched the honda pilot video I agree with everything you did complaint was alot of smoke now no smoke job done. they didn't ask for an oil change but they got that also wrong amount to right amount. When some people get on a keyboard they become experts on everything when they can't even pick their nose without watching a youtube video showing them how to do it. I put 80w/90 rear end grease one time by mistake, lifters starting rattling and think it ran hot till I realized what I did, probably 2 days and 200 kms later, changed it, oil pump went a month later, my brother was getting oil from his work, no lable on can...ughh east coast Canada NB 🇨🇦. Was a 1978 Olds omega(this happened in 1995 ) 2 door hatchback, 231 v6.

If it was no big deal driving with the engine overfilled with oil, why did Kenny bother to drain the oil and refill to the proper level? BTW, there is no doubt that excessive oil burning will eventually destroy a catalytic converter; it happens every time carbon build up siezes oil rings on pistons. Further the smaller the displacement and pan size, the greater the chance of hydrolocking the engine. This whole episode is just silly.

The point was not that he didn't change the oil, it was overfilling the car engine with oil was a problem that needed to be remedied, or he never would have made the video. Purposely sabotaging one's car to prove a point on RU-vid is silly. I will still watch Kenny and support his channel, but I think he should have just ignored the naysayers and moved on.

I have enjoyed you and your channel since discovering it. I was happy to see you reach your first big milestone, because of the quality of your content and the fact that you are also excellent at teaching and I invariably learn something every time I watch one of your videos. I watch a lot of different RU-vid channels out of curiosity and my love of learning new things. Every person that produces high quality content is trolled by people that are so miserable with themselves, that they need lash out at everyone from behind the protective shield of anonymity. If God himself had a RU-vid channel the hate would be equivalent to a nuclear explosion, just turn on your TV. As black as that oil you added was, they had run it like that several thousand miles, since their last oil change. It would have done whatever damage it was going to do by that time. Most of these people commenting couldn't even change a flat tire much less work on the car .

Ok I’m going to over fill my engine with 3 quarts of oil! Then you can test drive it. Find what I have done.wrong ,then tell you not to change the oil and filter. Then in about 2 years I am going to sue you because my engine just threw a rod and it’s your fault. When I was in my mid teens got home and our only car was running. Went in the house and asked dad why the car was running. He told me he drained the oil and filled it was kerosene to clean the inside of the engine! I should have sued him. Keep wrenching.

Good video! Like you say overfilling the oil isn't the end of the world. Long term overfilling could cause some damage, but I think we are talking a lot of miles. Using old oil not the best thing to do for your car. Short term should not hurt the car depending on the amount of oil. I Like to change my oil about every 7K miles +/ - 1K. I use synthetic, I like it better than non synthetic, maybe its not, but I like it. Before I sign off what with the dripping water? Didn't look like the streets were wet. KOKO!

Because our 78 Suburu DL Leaked oil we added a quart now and then. My wife added a quart and i didn't check because i knew it should need a quart. Shortly it lost the rear main seal. I'm not sure now that the oil was the cause.

Kenny, I've been working on vehicles since high school (back in the mid 70's), was formally trained in the U.S. Army as a Track & Wheel vehicle mechanic my whole army career (30 yrs.),was a wrench as a civilian until I retired in 2017. Overlook people Mr Kenny.Ive worked on some people's cars and,low and behold, even something you didn't touch, and it went bad anyway was my fault 😅 Did a brake job,then couple weeks later, their driveshaft fell out. Kenny has over 40 years of experience as a motor mechanic. The people who commented negatively about his method of testing will most likely have zero years experience as a motor mechanic. Yes you can leave it in but why take the chance if you don't have to Yes you drive it but it can also put air in the oil and ruin the oil pump it may not this time but why take the chance

Like you Kenny, any good mechanic would know if there was any serious risks as soon as they turned the key and heard the engine. If the engine was over filled to the absolute Extreme, like 20 or 30 Quarts over, You’d hear it. You’d get all sorts of worrying noises from things like ‘Crank Slap’ as the engine is running. This “I’d sue you” character sounds like an ‘Armchair Expert’ so take his comment with the ‘pinch of salt’ it deserves.

I shall apologize for all the haters out there You left a few things out first the guy had extended warranty that was not going to cover personal damage to a vehicle second, he refused a fresh oil change on his vehicle last but not least a week later and I will assume he is still driving his vehicle without any more issues

You have to have a decent understanding of how the oil pickup and sump work on an engine to understand that overfilling won't really do any damage to your vehicle. I have a 2013 Corolla (daily driver) that has 305k on it. The owners manual says to put 4.5 quarts into the engine after every oil change. You can bet that since day one, I have always dumped the full 5 quarts into that engine..have not replaced any seals as yet and I change the oil every 2500-3000 miles. Car runs like a champ, has good compression and with the exception of tires, steer components, brakes, calipers, PCV valves and shocks..I have replaced or repaired very little.

Just maybe, the haters were referring to draining the oil and putting the 4 quarts back in with no filter. The customer requested the filter not be change and put the oil back in because the CarShield policy would cover a overfill claim, makes sense to me. You do what the customer agrees to, nothing more and nothing less. Keep on wrenching Kenny, you did nothing wrong.

I think 95% would say your a good tech, the 5% possibly either never worked on there own car or never are wrong. I’m a dealership tech and what you did in no way is a big deal. Now if you drove it a few thousand miles possibly but even that’s a stretch. I give you credit I wouldn’t want to deal with the negative comments.

If I remember correctly there was a problem with Honda's with oil dilution. You said the customer had an extended warranty. Possibly could the customer had tried to get a new engine claiming a false oil dilution situation with purposely over filling it?

What is the problem with the other video, i don't understand it, it was okay to me, actually it happened to me, i poured 4.3L and it seemed that there was some oil in the engine already or something, it got overfilled by 1L, so i have to fish a line though the dipstick hole and suck the remaining oil out, i know I'm a moron😅, but lesson learned, and it was just 1L overfilled, nothing compared to this

I knew a kid that had a geo metro. Not a mechanic. His dad told him to check the oil like every time he drove it. He couldn’t see well and kept thinking it needed a quart. He filled the engine entirely up. At that point it quit running. I came over, drained probably 10-15 quarts of oil out of it, and got it running. The exhaust was full of oil too and it smoked like crazy for about 10 miles but after that was fine again. Was pretty funny.
