I look forward to starting my orchard, sugar and nut trees as well. We have 100 acres mostly forest but we only have 1 cherry and 3 pear. There are a few native paw paw and persimmon, blackberries and raspberries. Also a lot of hickory. I want to get some paper shell pecans in, dunston chestnuts, fig, and bay laurel. Would love some apples but have to be careful with rust. A LOT of cedar around here

I was given a dwarf Granny Smith and a big pot 2 years back. It laid dormant and I was sure it was dead. The next day I was gunna pull it out but it started to bud then flower. Now its autumn again and its second flowering has begun. I just found out it needs another apple tree to germinate or no fruit.

Wouldn't putting the dwarf in the middle cause it to not get enough sunlight over time as the larger varieties grow?
@GardenerScott

Good question. I will prune the trees to keep them small and have enough room for sun to shine on the ones behind.

Brilliant video, practical and instructive. Planning is basic. I've seen many gardens ruined because people hadn't considered how big their trees would grow when they planted them. I'd like to ask you something. If I'd had to store those trees for a week, I might've planted them temporarily in pots instead of leaving them in the box. Would that have bben unwise? A waste of time and energy? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
Glad it was helpful! I have planted them in pots, but for a longer period than a week. It's not unwise to do that and protect the roots. For just a few days I store them in a protected area and check the roots often to be sure they're not drying out.

Apple trees require a different variety for pollination. Will it be self pollinating if you graft another variety of apple onto it?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 3 года назад
Yes, different varieties grafted on the same tree can cross pollinate each other.

Welcome aboard! I suggest starting small and learning as much as you can. Decide what type of fruit you want, learn what conditions it needs to grow, and then planting just a few plants while you figure it out.

You may do this in the future...can you talk about how to prune fruit trees? Specifically, I'm wondering, if I have a branch that is 1 foot off the ground (as an example), in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, will it still be 1 foot off the ground or will it be higher? How much higher? Thanks.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
My next video that will show me planting my trees will discuss pruning. Branches won't change their position. If it is two feet off the ground now, it will be two feet off the ground in 10 years.

Another Q the area of the property I have available for my mini orchard is on the west side of the house. It currently has dogwoods, sweet gums, and lob lolly pines growing that I plan on removing for the fruit trees. However, I recently heard apples need morning sun. Will that area not work? I'm in 7b

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've seen many examples of apple trees in similar locations.

@gardnerscott so I'm planting fruit trees and some hard clay soil. Previously I asked you about whether I should dig a big hole or not and you said to dig a bowl. I've been thinking about doing half of the ball in the ground and half of the ball up in a raised garden box style bed 4x4 ft. What would you recommend is there any pros and cons?
@garrisonjones
@garrisonjones 4 года назад
@gardner Scott I should clarify two of the trees I am moving are larger previously established fruit trees trunk over 5 inches
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
That can work, but you need to consider the full size of the tree. Most tree roots are in the top 18 inches of soil and can spread out many feet beyond the drip line. I'm assuming that the soil in the bed will be amended and your hard clay soil isn't. The result will probably be that almost all of the roots will end up growing within the bed area. For a dwarf fruit tree with a small root system that may be okay. But for larger fruit trees you may have future problems with the trees not establishing a good anchor in the soil and they could blow over in heavy storms.
@garrisonjones
@garrisonjones 4 года назад
@@GardenerScott That was my concern. Thank you for your help and confirmation As I can get windy days I think I am going to go with your large bowl with amended soil approach and go from there. You really are amazing with your willingness to help. I truly appreciate all you do.
@garrisonjones
@garrisonjones 4 года назад
@@GardenerScott Thanks for your help. I took your suggestion and planted in ground , large shallow bowl, and amended soil since they are such mature trees. In your opinion how do I makes sure I keep these transplants wet enough but not to wet because of my soil. Is there a formula for how many gallons per week? Trees have a trunk slightly too big to wrap my hands around. One is over 10 feet tall one is about 5 feet tall. Tall one is a peach short is an apricot. I appreciate your expertise and I have been searching the internet and cannot find someone who gives information on transplanting large trees like this. Any help you can give that will guide me to keep these trees alive would be fantastic. Thank you in advance.

I . I have a question I'd like to ask you is so true apple seeds contain more just one kind of Apple seed. If you plant apple seeds I heard you get five different varieties of apple trees it's that true.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
That's true. Every apple tree produces hybrid fruit because it takes two different varieties to pollinate. If you plant the seeds you will get many different results.
