Setting up A Home Server - Optiplex 7040 

this is how i started out, now i have 3 optiplex pcs, i have an addiction.

Nice! I set up a 7040 to run PLEX and transcode the videos from another server. 16GB RAM, and a 3.2GHz i5. Only 128GB SSD boot drive since my movies are elsewhere.

That is pretty cool, one thing which disappoints me with making a server out of a pc is that it uses like 25-30 watts just at idle. Also don't forget that in the BIOS settings you can make it that the server automatically turns on at a specific time and turns back off.

By the way, WD purple (or surveillance) drives are designed to be running 24/7 since they are intended for use with surveillance systems. So it's perfect for a server since it would be running 24/7.

if only this optiplex had room for dual 3.5hdds it would be the perfect server/nas for me

I actually use a 7040 as my home server as well. It’s responsible for NAS services and MDT for deployment of Windows

How much did that rig cost you? You got me wanting one now, also I have always had problems setting up any kind of server like one for Minecraft, and due to my small brain couldn't get it to work, maybe im just lacking the brain cells required lol. Great vid btw!

Did you already decided the OS other than windows. I got a system just like yours and I'm using truenas scale and for my use case works amazing

I want to take the motherboard out, change the case, change the PSU, add a PCIE to SATA expansion. Would love to make it into NAS but i think it is difficult.

Do you have a backup drive? Or are you just using that 2tb drive? I am gonna buy a optiplex Sff too but not sure if I can squeeze two drives in it

Not sure if it's me, but when attempting to watch this video, the only option available for captions is Vietnamese (auto translate). it seems to be translating from English to Vietnamese and back to English, so it makes no sense whatsoever. I speak English but I'm hard of hearing, so use captions/transcript.

It could be no reason but I wondered, why did you use a seperate account for the minecraft server instead of just the Administrator account?
