Please do a video on what to do with drum shells. You might have already done that though. I bought a used set at a garage sale. They gave us a bunch of scrap drum pieces. And shells...lots of shells.
Hi David, I have a question. I am 13, and a percussionist in band, as well as an enthusiastic musician in general. A few years a go I decided to buy my own drum set, however, being 11, I only decided on the crappy 260 dollar gammon one on Amazon. I loved it for a few years, however recently it's started to fall apart (which makes sense.) The kick drum pedal is screwed up, the hi hat isn't tall enough, all the heads are flimsy, and the cymbals sound like garbage. I've decided to upgrade it (at least a lil) so I decided on replacing all the heads (ambassador coated for snare beater side, ambassador hazy for snare snare side, and g2s for floor and Tom, as well as a new kick drum head, forget the name) Meinl hi hats and crash, sabian ride, new kick drum pedal, and gilbratar hi hat stand, as well as new cymbal stands for the assorted new cymbals, which comes out to about 500 dollars (Christmas money to the rescue!) Obviously I can't spend thousands on a pro kit at 13, but I at least wanted a little upgrade for the time being, so I thought this was a good fix. So my question(s) is, are there any things I should change before I order? Also should I get new resonant heads for the toms and kick? I was only going to get beater sides for those, so do they make a difference? Thanks. Also fellow commentators plz feel free to help as well I could use it
Hello, I am also a drummer of similar age. I would personally wait and save for a new set. I got a Yamaha stage birch custom I believe it is called with some zildjian cymbals and pdp hardware after years of playing on a shitty electric. That was all for a bit over a grand. If I were you I would just hang tight and save since you’re practically half way there. Also, maybe this is just me, but when I play on other kick pedals it feels like shit. I invested in a DW5000 pedal and I love it. Hope that can help
foam paneling and monitor foam are a waste of money imo. You can make absorption panels out of rockwool insulation inside a wooden frame and I've heard (haven't tried it myself) that a mouse pad is good enough isolation for studio monitors. I know everyone on the internet thinks they're an expert and I'm not, lol, just my opinion
Im glad so many people agree with me like some of those videos with all the hacks dude really help when i gig and at home too but only the ogs will know what im talking about lol
Buy some shitty earbuds at the dollar store, tape each ear to a drum, run them all into a 5-way splitter of something, run that into the shitty mic input on your laptop and record. No joke, my friend recorded an album like that with a bunch of yard sale trash instruments on a windows 95 pc running CoolEdit (old version of Adobe Audition) Suuuper lo-fi of course, but you can surprisingly get some usable enough sounds if your budget is really that tight, lol.
So uh, I went over yonder to Nashville to help Ricky set up his studio and heres the results! Y'all best check out his channel to see the unboxing! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IJi-OK0SBZc.html
Nice....but please for the love of Mike get the desk with the monitors out of the corner. He's going to have tons of problems mixing if he leaves it there....
Cool vid, love seein you work with other people sometimes. One thing I'd love to see you try and build are DIY Octobans or DIY Roto Toms. I've been thinking about building some because I can never find used, big rotos in my area for cheap; but I just don't know where to start with it.
I agree 100%. The foam honestly was mostly an aesthetic investment. For those non-musicians, the studio foam backdrop adds a lot of value in the looks department. Certainly some cheaper options to explore.
What works in place of legit soundfoam? Could you maybe do a future video trying out various DIY substitutes for soundfoam? Like the old egg carton method.
Egg cartons don't do shit. Old towels work great though, possibly better than auralex. Something to keep in mind is that foam anf towels are too thin to do anything for bass frequencies, they only tame high end flutter. You might want to look into rockwool bass traps if you want to treat a room properly
Nice video, i would say that the bass tom doesn't sounds great, that's too bad 😕 I don't know how many time you spend on the mix or if the bass tom was tuned great so well, i think it deserve to fix it 😅 After all thank you for your videos i really like them, your tips are very usefull !
I actually don't use a bottom head on my floor tom (going for a more vintage sound). What I ended up figuring out later was placing the mic inside the drum instead of on top of the head is WAY better. Mic placement makes all the difference for that issue!
This actually sounded pretty good to me. Especially considering the mics you were using. I’d love to see how a bass mic on the floor Tom, a sub kick, and a Shure sm57 on the snare would of sounded... also somee604’s on the racks. But kit to kit I think Rickys sounded best! Lol his toms definitely seemed lively! Great video thank you!!!
Nice work, great vid. Just curious.... is there a method behind your placement of the tiles on the wall? It looks like there’s some spare space on the left of on the left of the wall and on the right you right out of space. Is it centered around the kit for camera angles?
Really nice video! Another tip I can give to people with smaller drum rooms (especially if the roof is low) is to use a Mid/Side configuration in front of the drumset instead of the A/B OH you are using here! Have given me some really nice results!
Yo David, big fan of the channel, been watching for a couple years now. Anyway, is there any tips you can give me on recording a drum kit with only one mic? Thanks man
hey man, I use the fluffy side of velcro on the back of the foam and then use "3M command" strips to hang it. then you just pull the tab of the command strip when you want to remove the foam which leaves nothing on the wall :)
David.. please please please post a general video of you tuning heads i have a bop kit I need to properly tune. I know there is a lot of info on this already, but I only like to hear your voice. Much love. Your videos are super tasty.
