Brilliant for what it is and pack size but I would still be inside a bivvy bag inside the bug net, just to stop any gust of wind and rain that’s gets in. Can never be to sure haha, love the vids Paul don’t you give up now!!

An idea for content if you're up any, do some short 1 minute videos of tieing knots! Do one knot per video, create a mini series of them and people will definitely come to them for reference. I know I would as I'm currently looking for fishing knots!

Greetings from very warm and dry Northern California.been around 100F (38C) here recently and no significant rain since Nov. ‘21. I think a rig like this would work here even in the mountains for the occasional light shower and the price was epic. I’m not very good with knots myself but I have a bandanna with all the major knots so I just pretend I’m wiping my brow and glance at the bandanna and people think I’m a knot wizard. Hang in there.

Great finds for the tarp and bug net! I love setting up with knots as it cuts weight and is super flexible. That's a great set up that is UL and "double walled" so that condensation isn't a big deal. One thing I've learned by experience is to put the handle end of your trekking pole up. Little critters love to chew on the ends because of the salt from sweat after a long hot day of hiking. Cheers and have a great time wild camping!

+1 to the other comments about some knot tutorial videos. Do you use Prusik knot/loop ever? I pre-rigged some lines with them and they're very useful for quick setup and tensioning.

Try a figure 4 guy line knot Paul. Fully adjustable and quick release, perfect for those guy lines. I might be tempted to find a way to pitch it with a dropped front for more protection but looks good for summer use. Keep doing what you're doing mate!👍

It's a nice looking setup! I have the two man from paria and love it! gives me just that little extra bit of room, and within 11 ft by 14 ft tarp I have a huge amount of space to play with and get comfortable in even in the most adverse conditions.
@cyrilhaessig27

How do you find the space in the breeze mesh tent ? I have been considering getting one but being tall I was wondering is my sleeping bag would touch both ends. I think it is 210cm ?
@RickMunday
@RickMunday 2 года назад
@@cyrilhaessig27 That sounds about right. I only use it in the warmest weather, so I'm usually carrying a lighter bag and gear. I find that I actually slightly sleep on the diagonal, completely unintentional but it seems to be how I end up. Even the bivvy version is great, though I find that one a little small, but I am a side sleeper.
@TheScotsalan

Where I live just now, most ppl sleep in bug nets in the house 😂👍. But seriously, a tarp with a bug net bonded to the sides, and a grounsheet bonded on the bottom could be a great ultra light summer kit. I would even go so far as to forget the groundsheet and bond the net straight onto a sleeping mat. 👍
@TheScotsalan
@TheScotsalan 2 года назад
Should add, my dream thing at the moment is an ozzie style swag roll. I done the classic backpacking at home in the UK, tent, mat etc, but its a pain to lug it about. I like the idea of a roll. sleeping mat with a thermal blanket on top, net sides and a tarp top. Just roll it up and sling it over your shoulder or strap it onto a medium size pack. 👍

Great set up! I always overheat in a tent on hot summer nights, and as I'm immunosuppressed then mossie bites are a real issue for me (infection, antibiotics, pain & misery etc...). Always a good feeling when you can pick up quality kit for bargain basement prices👍. I had this exact Rab setup a few years ago, used it a few times in varied conditions and decided it was totally style over substance and not for me. That being said and as you noted in this video the bug net shelter is quite a useful little cocoon for warm summer nights out, so I kept that and sold the sil wing on.

No joke this video is 2 months before I do a thru hike of the superior hiking trail. Set on tarp for weight and bug net if warmer. but debating on using my Hilleberg 5 or Seek Outside DST. It's a grind time goal for the trek not comfort, so probably the Hilleberg but I'm so fond of the DST I can't decide just yet. DRAWN OUT RAMBLING no bug net yet so u pointed me in a great direction.

This is the kind of kit guys should have been issued in Vietnam. Keep the bugs off so you can actually sleep. No overly warm bivy, and keeps the rain off. Perfect for a lot of places where you could sleep using clothes you already had and an insulated poncho or blanket like a swagman roll. Guys today have way WAY better lighter gear than even 20 years ago

As a UL shelter a Bug Bivy and lightweight tarp is a light way to go. I normally am in a Jungle Hammock but this Fall ( cooler weather ) I will switch off at times to a Bug Bivy and tarp. Summer here in Florida the heat index in June , 2022 hit the 111 degree mark ( 43.88C ) . Over on this side of the pond ( America ). The bivy is from Yama Mountain gear and is the "Y" Zip at 7.4 oz.( 209.78g ) 90 inches long ( 228.6 cm ) , 36 inches wide ( 91.44 cm ) and 23 inches high ( 58.42 cm ) . The tarp is from hammock gear and is a 12 x 10 feet at 16.52 ounces.( 468.334g )

Now I have two of the YAMA Mountain Gear ( Silpoly ) Bug Bivy's , the "Y" Zip and the 1 Person Bug Shelter. They have 5 different models in total. 1... The Y Zip Bug Bivi. ( Posted on here 1 month ago.) 2...The 1 Person Bug Shelter from YAMA Mountain Gear. . Entry is either from the side or the head. They are 84 ( regular ) or 90 ( long ) inches in length. I have an 84 inch which weighs 9.6 ounces. The silpoly tub's sides angle out making it 84 on the ground and 88 for the interior length. The head section's width is 34 on the ground and 38 on the interior. The tub ( sides ) are 8 inches with a 40 inch head room and 25 inches at the feet. Total of 17.5 square Feet. It packs up at 8 x 5 x 4. The 90 inch one is slightly longer , wider , heavier and the same height.

The poles at £20 are a real steal, wow. The net seems nice if a bit cramped, but those funny shape tarps are not for me, seems a one trick ponies. Much rather a standard rectangular tarp. DD 3x3 tarp is roomy and allows a multitude of pitching options: from suspended, to closing sides, to full on tent outer setup. If weight is a concern then DD has superlight versions. Looking forward to hearing how the camp went.

You could whip up a lanshan 2 pro tent which is just a luxury tarp in a quarter of the time of that and have more space cover and nothing more in weight. If your looking for something to do instead of being at the pub or another dreary shopping trip with the wife then it's ok and better watching the TV with her too. But just an excuse to buy gear is that if you have money to waste or burning a hole in your pocket.
