Hi everyone! I'm the one that printed these traps for Shawn. While I didn't design any of them, I did customize the spike trap with Shawn's logo. I was skeptical these were going to work very well, but now that I've seen what mice do with them, I think I could improve the original designers' work: 1. All of the tilting traps: add some rare earth magnets to latch it closed. I was actually thinking about adding magnets, but with COVID delaying shipping, it would have delaying finishing these for Shawn. Magnets would be very easy to add though. 2. Spike trap: The original Thingiverse file was corrupted and couldn't be sliced, so I took the concept and basic dimensions and made my own. FDM 3D printing can't make very strong sharp spikes, so I will send Shawn a newer version of the lid that uses metal nails. I think it should be just as effective as the antique with that change. Also, the green lid Shawn didn't test in the video has a much tighter "squeeze" for the mouse to get through. The blue lid was the original Thingiverse design, which I thought was much too open, and sure enough, it was. 3. The exercise wheel trap was submitted for a Thingiverse contest, but the original designer never actually printed or tested it. Someone else mentioned covering the outside to keep mice from spinning it before getting inside, and I think that's a great idea. That one had really loose tolerances that I think I could tighten up to make it less sensitive. All of these were printed in PLA, but it's possible printing with a glass or carbon-filled plastic would discourage them from chewing.
I agree on the exercise wheel, having a cover would help a lot. For the spike trap, maybe if the spikes where printed separately and inserted after so they had a little room to move inward and maybe even a small rubber band to pull them in, though i guess you'd still have the problem of the mice chewing on them.
Good ideas. Definitely needs more narrow needles, the magnet idea sounds great. I made some suggestions for the bottle trap too, basically it needs a way to hold up when the mouse tries to go in, and when it tilts back, have that stand drop away and when it drops back down it falls in place to block the mouse's exit.
The 3d printed mouse trap contest should become a regular thing with entry dates and prizes! It would be a great way to get more interaction from your viewers.
@@eldiantre7346 , I made 7 bottle fly traps and used them for two summers. Added store-bought honey and water. They cought a lot of flies. The problem is, there were always the same amount of flies in the yard. Seems they were coming in from afar. It might be a means of reducing the population over a big area.
I died laughing at the failure of these traps! It was like a corporate project, on discussion table everything is great and works as expected but on application they fail miserably. Thank you shawn, you are the best!
See, the problem is that the mice in Shawn's barns have been unintentionally bred over the past 9 years to be experts at trap diffusion and master chewers. These traps didn't stand a chance against these _advanced rodents_

No, that's not it. In the country there is an endless supply of mice always looking for the kind of shelter a barn provides. City people have no clue how prolific and populous mice are.
To be honest: it's the fact that shawn catches them then releases them. Even though he takes them out into the woods, I doubt they stay there for long. They make their way back and don't fall for the same crap next time lol..... I don't care if they are domestic or invasive, if they're in the barn eating your feed and spreading disease, they need to be dispatched.
Goes to show you millennials who think they are so much smarter than us boomers but those 5 couldn't trap ONE freaking mouse. 20 hrs design time- check 40 hrs print time - check $600 3d printer - check $20 worth of pla - check mice caught - ZERO
@@muskokamike127 no wayt hat was a 40 hour print time, it could be made on cheaper 200$ printers like the ender 3 and that was no where near 20$ of pla

Well Shawn, some of us found you among the flintknapping videos years ago and still appreciate the long format. I know making short and snappy videos will help grow your audience, but please include some longer videos as well. Your grounded personality and logical approach are soothing in these chaotic times. Like Mr Rogers for adults.
Mice are smart little boogers. Some changes I would make: 1. On the wheel, make a guard around the outside so the mice can't spin it from the outside. 2. The pop bottle teeter totter, mix peanut butter and sunflower seeds and drop the clusters into the bottom of the bottle. 3. For all of them, use a stronger filament like PETG or silicon to make it harder for the mice to escape.
Those 3D printed mouse traps were like an amusement park for them. :D I think your channel will have more viewers soon. I heard there are a lot of mouse problems even in US and that will bring more people to your channel. Keep up the good work, Shawn.
This is precisely why there are so few inventors out there. It's easy to put together something. It's very hard to put together something that's actually good.
As we have seen so many times before, mice usually climb on top of a trap before going inside. So any trap that is triggered by the mouse’s body weight is prone to failure, unless it automatically resets itself when the mouse gets off.
I don't understand why anyone would only watch half the videos. I for one love watching the huge variety of traps being presented. One of the best parts is seeing the wildlife that comes for a free mouse dinner!
I'd love to see a video about tool using rats. Your video about a rat using a stick to set off a trap was amazing. I was unaware that rats actually use tools.
Thanks for showcasing my design (The 1st one)! While it still didn't hold the energetic mice, it held on for the longest time! I like the suggestion of using magnets, but of course often we make do with what most people had at home, heavier weights (more coins) might help. The chewing however ,has been highlighted in the comments (on Thingiverse), but nothing beats those rodent teeth... May I also add, my design has very minimal printed parts (use less material), hence take considerably less time to print. Lastly it is free to enjoy!
The main reason I started watching this videos was because they were short, on time where every channel wants to release 15+ minutes of video. The change is very welcomed!
This video should be mandatory watching for anyone designing their own mousetrap. The lessons learned here would help avoid similar mistakes in future designs. e.g. if the trap is setoff by simple exterior contact, it's not going to work. Or, if the door doesn't latch closed, the mice will open it.
I was suprised. When you tested on your pet mice they all seemed very well thought out, theoretically. ' I was even moren suprised that the mice tried to help each other out of the traps. Didn't know that mice were that socially conscious.
Just so you know I watch your videos until the end. The problem isn’t you it’s RU-vid algorithms and people with short attention spans that have no interest in what your channel is about. You got a solid fan base on here. Don’t stress so much, there’s other ways to earn revenue.
I like how shawn always goes in a circle. If you guys remember he used to post monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. But later went to just Monday but longer. I love this channel.

"Traps" ROFL! There are very obvious technical reasons why other trap designers prefer to build their traps out of steel instead of such cheap plastic junk.
3D printers are worthless for practical applications. They will get there eventually but they are for nerds to design 89 cent toys with a 500 dollar machine that doesn't always work properly. I am not a fan
@@_Jigen CNC machine = Make anything, from useless to life-changingly practical. They have existed for decades and changed the face of manufacturing. 3D printers are currently a fun plaything. You basically admitted it's a tool to make actual tools through casting. Generally the tolerances needed for a practical cast are not possible with a 3D printer. Again, I'm confident it will get there. Hell they are talking about 3D printing the shelters they build on mars.
I saw that logo hole in the spike bottle thing, and paused the vid knowing that the mice would chew their way out immediately. also the bottle lid thing swivels way too easily. but they seem fun.
It would be a good idea to make a little video about what makes a mousetrap good or bad. 2 points: they should not be activated when a mouse touches it outside from the normal mechanism; they should not let escape the animal when it chewes the trap.

It's not just your channel, It's likely most of them. Mine is auto repair "how to" stuff and my views have dropped by a third since the pandemic. Keep it up, I love Mousetrap Mondays!
I like the change you're making. I personally don't watch for more than 5 minutes, and almost always skip the part where you feed the dead mice to wildlife.
Although not live-catch, the simple, inexpensive snap traps seem to work better than these 3-D printed traps. All these traps are doing is feeding the mice and making them smarter.
I think that the biggest surprise was that Shawn has a RU-vid channel manager at RU-vid? Wonders will never cease! PS Shawn you do what ever is best for your channel and for you and your family.
I think that the bottle trap looked the most effective, and with some iterative revisions it could be made to successfully trap, like making the neck cover part a bit deeper. The other designs seemed to be like a playground for the mice to keep them entertained :) It was good to see them all tested together.
This video should be mandatory viewing for any UI/UX designer to illustrate the concept of "how you planned the user will interact with your creation" vs "how the users actually interact with your creation".

I’ve tried several 3d printed mouse traps and the best one so far is the kill trap with the noose like the one from Sweden featured in your video. I set up the traps like you do and with trail camera to see their behavior and they always check out trap from different angles. If it’s too sensitive would likely fail and the mouse accidentally set off the trap. It has to be able to stay in place without going off even when a mouse climb over. Recently I’ve had rats in the area and they are so hard to catch. In fact I’ve never been able to catch them. They check the trap but never go inside. At one time one of them did go in and set off the trap but it fail to kill and the rat got away. That one never come near the same trap again.
there might be a day when a video appears on this channel posted by a giant mice and his team of squirrels saying "Today for human trap Monday, I've got this amazing trap and I've already caught one native farm human in it. This one's called Shawn."
I would say to post the Q&A as a separate video. I tune out of the Q&A portion of the videos frequently not because I'm not interested, but because I clicked for the mousetrap. I leave to watch the Q&A later, but then forget since it is not it's own video. This would also give you more frequent uploads!

Thanks for this video. Reviewers gotta be brutally honest and you showed the truth about these mouse traps. Nobody needs to waste money printing a mouse trap that doesn't work. I don't have a mice problem, but it's really great to see human ingenuity at its best (or this time, its worst)
Haha! The mice are too smart! Let's keep in mind that it was basically these kinds of creatures that survived during the dinosaur era, survived the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs, and evolved into us. They're not going to be stopped by a bottle with a swinging door. But it was interesting nonetheless. Thanks for the vid; I've subscribed and I hope your business picks up.
