If you have to go to ground in your hammock here is how to get it done. Every hammock will be a bit of a different pitch but this the basics. Shug Small fan..www.amazon.com/dp/B00KBXOIMC/... The Packa....www.thepacka.com
I have a hammock and wondered what to do if I had no trees, now I know, Thank you so much. This is very informative and also enjoyable to watch. Take care Shug I hope to travel around Canada with my hammock and a tent as well.
Thanks for all you do for the hanging world! Just wanted to share that I did the JMT 3 years ago on the ground and I missed my hammock. I realized that they have plenty of trees in the west to find somewhere to hang. I took my two boys and some friends back in late July this year. Since you are above the treeline a lot on the JMT I decided we needed a ground game. So we took a klymit air pad for insulation in the hammock and comfort on the ground. We used poly widow shrink wrap for a ground cloth. We could get two fronkey bug nets under one tarp which decreased our foot print. The shock cord on the bottom of the fronkey stays snug under the air pad. The system worked great but fortunately we only had to use it at a campground in Lee Vining the night before we went on trail in Yosemite We were the only ones hanging out west. The buy at VVR even commited that he has never seen a hammock group in area where backpackers camp that he calls mushroom city! Not much on the internet on hanging in the Sierras. Its possible with a little longer tree straps and an option for the ground. Next time I will take my underquilt and just tough it out on the ground if I have on a Sierra adventure.
Shug, i recall seeing this a while ago... and i have not read each comment-but, this is an Outstanding lesson! In a pinch- turn the Trash compactor bag inside out (bc ya don’t want dirt going back into your pack when your done) and fill it with leaves. This, is a “Brouse” bag and protects you from the ground-helping you stay off and preventing conduction. AND- I learned to juggle nearly just like this at the end of the vid. Thanks again, my Lord-of-Lollygag!!!
Thank you, Shug. Your videos are unforgettable so I learn something every time. You really shared a lot of information with viewers over the years. I’m new to hammock camping and really appreciate your generosity.
Cheers shug, I needed this on a recent trip, I ended being up on the side of a hill while my tented friends were down in the valley. Will use this in a pickle next time if needed. Woohoo buddy!!!!!
I'm going to make a video about how to hang a tent in a tree😉 Another great video shug. Almost had to go to ground a couple times. I always carry a torso length pad just in case. Plus it makes a good couch 👍
Great work, Shug! I was waiting on some comment on the trash compactor bag being new vs used but guess my mine was in the garbage. You are single handily bringing the woods back to generations of people.
I'm an Old RV'r but love hiking the woods. Buying a setup really for "me", but also my son can can use it to get to outdoors easier and enjoy life under the stars. I'm liking this better than tenting myself, giving me more versatility. No I'm not hiking out for no 2 weeks....2-5 days here...early spring to late fall. Winters kill me now. You are a wealth of information and give multiple forms of setups. Two thumbs up....I'm on a series of your videos sucking in information. 👍👍
Hey Shug! I've been on the fence about trying a hammock for about a year now. With my oldest son in scouts (Star) & me serving as a leader, we go camping every month.... Then I stumbled across your YT channel about 2 weeks ago & it fired me up. Got my first hammock delivered last week and can't wait to string her up!! My son doesn't know it yet, but he has one sitting in my closet for his birthday next month!!! Keep posting these videos and we'll keep watching.
htmelle yeah he does. The main reason it took me so long to pull the trigger is because I don't personally know anyone that hammock camps. Shug pushed me over the edge.
Thanks! Great video. Yep, not enough trees - my biggest fear! lol. Just pray it's not raining if that ever happens, too. A similar situation happened to us recently so 3 of us tied off to one central tree and we kind of star patterned out from it. One was a snorerer, so 2 of us didn't get much sleep! haha Happy trails!
We are doing our first hammock camping trip Easter weekend. We decided to ditch the tent and only take hammock systems for the 5 of our family that is going. We have tested them in the local park several times with the entire setup so crossing our fingers!
I had a go at this with my dd frontline hammocks worked really well and half way through the night a weasel thing walked through my set up took refuge on my bag, it was raining out side it took no notice of me in the hammock then the rain stopped and it went. It was a bizarre experience probably looked at me thought dumb humans got himself caught in a net. You always make your vids entertaining and at the same time useful, I have to say I enjoy them a great deal. Thanks
Thank u for another helpful video from the Shug video-vault I can lookup and get some good instruction from, I hope you keep them coming, much appreciated good sir.
3:13 always great! Woo buddy I've never seen this before. Good to file away in the noodle... I have a tent trip coming up in a few days with my 7 y/o camper and a hammock trip a few days later with my buddies. Will manage to stay cool by the river, can't wait! All secure in sector 7
Good idea using the hammock! I have only planned on using my tarp in a scenario like this. I don't use trekking poles yet so it would be strong sticks. Nice little fan!
Great video Shug - it's a topic that hasn't been covered sufficiently. The only thing I'd add is, the few times I've had to go to ground I've been able to find one end (I make it the head end) that I could tie to something (small tree, picnic table, etc.) Makes it a little easier to set up with one person. Keep those videos coming!
Cool solution! I am about to go to iceland where there are no trees in most areas...and i really didnt want to buy a tent. Would prefer to just use my ENO JungleNest hammock. Now i know i can. Thanks Shug ✌🏼
Good video. I use this technique to pitch my Cuban tarp and My $20 Chillax double on the beach here in S Florida. Hey Shug. The Chilax is 10'6" long not stretched out tight. 90's and high humidity are the name of the game here and it can be done bug free in shade. Tight lines
Great stuff, Shug! Hope all's well! If you have a Fir or Spruce near by, their boughs make a very comfy and warm bed that helps with conduction. Not hard or time consuming to make up either - kept me warm with a small fire for 3 nights in Scotland a couple years ago!
Hey Shug. I have been following your channel for a long time. Thanks for contributing all that knowledge and preference for me and others to enjoy. I just want to point out, that I believe the optimal position of the stake (shown @ 6:49) is actually the ridge of the stake facing the direction of the pull. You have faced the ridge facing away from the direction of pull. Hope this makes sense, and a difference :) Have a great day.
I woke up from the warbonnet ridgerunner this morning and saw your new video post. Reminds me i need to practice going to ground in the ridgerunner...i might have to one day! But i hope not!
set my hennessy hyperlite up like that on a 10,000' summit, woke when the wind pulled out all the stake and the weight of the trekking poles was all that save it from going off into the abyss. noisy night for sure.
Hello Shug, thank you, as always, for the instructional and entertaining vidoes. Always enjoy them!!! Question: when you're "going to ground" like this tarp ste-up, do you not use the shock-cord line tighteners , as you do with a hammock hang tarp setup? Thanks, and WHOOOO BUDDY!!!
shug, any recommendations for a sleeping pad to bring with on a longer hike where going to ground is a higher probability, such as JMT/PCT where you'll be above the tree line?
Nice video Shug. also could dig up the soil if compacted to make a little softer. Depending on season, pine needles or the like,a few bushels under hammock. Keep em coming.
Anutter gud'n ... but then when aren't they! Good information pal ... for the dreaded "going to ground".CLEVER tarp delivery intro! LOVED IT. Hope you and the bride are doing well!
I had to do this recently. I'd seen this video ONCE in the past... so my setup wasn't _quite_ like this... but it got me through the night which included a thunderstorm, with light hail. Slept warm, but my back HURT like the dickens in the morning. Man, I don't like sleeping on the ground. - HF toferj
I cannot use a hammock due to problems with my back. However I keep watching all your videos because they are very informative, fun and provide all of us without of good info. Cheers!
I have a recommendation. Use a Taut-Line Hitch over at your stakes. You won't have to reposition the stakes, only tighten the hitch. Great tutorial, thanks.
OH I hate the thought of sleeping on the ground after all the years in the hammock,, I will hike or canoe to another sight if I am alone to find the right trees, but worst case yes this would work just fine,, thanks as always for your time and effort in making a great vid to educate the hammocking community.
Excellent video Shug, as always! I'm wondering how that'll work with my netless. I've just ordered netting for making a fronkey style, so I guess I'll just have to experiment!
Thx Shug! Great ideas.. Besides tent setup, I only have an eno hammock, and a large (non ul) tarp (the kind of HD material traditionally tarps are/were made out of. What would be the ideal solution for bugs? -or should I just cough up the dough for a whole new setup like dutch's new hammock or warbonnet ridgeline or xl ?
hey shug how do you deal with tension lines in your hammock? I have a ridgeline but theres still a tension line running up the middle right of my hammock when I use it. I have a chameleon too btw
Thanks Shug. Haven't had to deal with that...yet. Your UQ protector could be another layer of protection. If you carry it on trips you are concerned about finding a good hang.
Maybe on amazon for cheaper tarps. I heard folks like the Chill Gorilla tarp. Seam seal it! Search hammock tarts on amazon and you will see a lot on the cheap.
Sod this in far too civilised to sleep on the ground like some beast, I'd just keep walking to the next set of trees... JK. Good plan. DD hammocks used to sell a waterproof bottomed hammock for this purpose, but I heard it made you sweat something rotten. Great video Monsieur Emery.
Adrian Haddock I have that DD hammock my son used it all this past week from sun through Thursday at linville gorge. I can say it will get some condensation in cold weather but he has no issues in the warm weather
I have the DD Hammocks Modular Jungle Hammock. It does sweat some in the winter so I just remove the second layer. I too have used it in Linville Gorge. (!!) I also had to go to ground out west where trees were sparse or too weak above the tree line. The DD Hammock performed well as a bivy.
Adrian Haddock I have that DD hammock......the travel hammock. I have it set up in the woods behind our house all the time.....and yeah.....it does get condensation in IT!
When I bought my hammock, I specifically chose one with 3000mm waterproof fabric so it could be used as a bivvy on the ground if necessary. Of course, I'd still use some sort of additional waterproof liner under it. I've always carried an assortment of large plastic garbage bags in my pockets when camping for emergency waterproofing/shelter and recently managed to get some Polycro sheeting. At some stage, I want to get a piece of Tyvek as a more resilient - but still lightweight - "footprint" for going to ground or any other time I might need some additional/emergency waterproofing. My Exped Downmat doesn't work well in the hammock when hanging, but I plan to carry it anyway so I've got something insulated and comfortable to lie on if I have to go to ground for the night - it's worth the extra (negligible) weight and bulk to have it on hand in case of emergencies. ("Better to have and not need" etc) Thanks for showing how it's done. Pretty much as I theorised it would work, but nice to get some pointers from someone with experience. One of the main reasons for transitioning to hammocks, for me, is to have something more *versatile* than tent camping - the ability to set up the tarp in numerous configurations, the ability to camp in places where it's impossible to pitch a tent etc - and that includes being able to go to ground if there's nothing suitable to hang a hammock from. I want my system to give me more options for choosing a place to stay the night than I previously had.
Shug, I used my Chameleon hammock with the beetle buckles for the last several hundred miles of my AT thru hike. I used whoopie slings previously and want to switch back to a similar set up with the dutch biner similar to what you have in the video. What kind of water trap do you use for the chameleon and where do you attach it on the hammock suspension? The beetle buckle worked well but I get nervous when it gets a little to close to my cuben fiber tarp.
Hey Shug love the channel. If I cant find the trees i need , I will use 1 tree and make a tripod for the other end to hang my hammock. I make bipods to hang my tarp.
What do you think about a hammock without an integrated bug net? I recently got a bug sock over from Dream Hammock, and I was wondering if a polycro ground sheet was enough protection for the noseeum netting. (will be using an inflatable pad inside the hammock to give it some space). Granted, that will definitely not be the go-to, but a make shift bivy seems pretty awesome to have in the back pocket.
hey....I remember those original orange crush drinks , and old skool nehi`s , a & w ` s and chocolate soldiers . all the good ones had cane sugar in em....not fructose corn syrup. great hammocking vid as usual , shug
we rarely ever saw them down south here....but I had only a rare few of em....that were blue......raspberry flavored nehis.....ive dug old bottles for years.....ive got em all the way back to blob top coca-cola and even some crockery beer bottles and lightning colored jars....whats truly funny...is the best ones are found a lot in old long unused outhouses , and very deep dumpsites....
