This was a very great setup! There's just two things I recommend. 1) If I were you I wouldn't bury the hide, water bowl, and skull so deep in the bedding as they would get in the way of the boa while it borrows. This really isn't that big of a deal but it's just something I noticed. 2) I would also recommend put some reptile carpet or something at the very bottom of the terrarium. Even if you have a thermostat, the glass can easily overheat and neither of us wants your boa to get burnt! Again, this was a very great setup! I am not trying to criticize this in anyway and I'm happy that you clearly know what you're doing! :)
Thank you!! And yeah I've been thinking of putting a piece of repticarpet over the heat pad to avoid the glass getting too hot so I'll definitely do that! It always scares me how he can get so close 😩
Looks cool, but as another KSB owner, I'm gonna let you know that pretty set up will be destroyed in a matter of hours. They will bulldoze everything and just redecorate the entire tank.
From what I remember, never put heavy stones in for a burrowing species as they may burrow under neath it and collapse it onto themselves and get injured
Got those of you who are saying you will get a tank like this for you sand boa I just want to point out a few thing. 1). It really comes down to the preference of your own sand boa. Some absolutely love large enclosures with lots of room to burrow but other can get stressed out. This may lead to bad shedding and not eating properly so make sure your sand boa is happy with a larger tank. 2). I do not recommend putting sand in a sand boas enclosure. Although they are named so the sand can get stuck in their scale s which may lead to infection. As well as when feeding they may digest the sand which could also cause medical problems. I didn't mean to rant and I'm sure comet absolutely adores his new home but I'm just warning people looking for advice that it really just comes down to preference of your own snake since they all have different personalities. My sand boa personally love a his smaller encloser and was too over whelmed with his larger one that is now home to a different snake. It also comes down to the sex since female sand boas grow significantly larger than the males. I hoped this helped a few people. I loved the encloser and the video though.
this was from 4 years ago lol but i was hoping if u really think aspen is better then sand for them? because i’m debating which one to get aspen or sand..?
Such a cutie. I love sand boas so much. They don't do much but they are still oddly satisfying to have. I used to be terrified of snakes but this specific breed actually helped me overcome that fear and now I love them.
Not sure if you still have this snake, but mixing in top soil with the Aspen will really help hold their borrows and help keep things in place a bit more
"Wooow you're just sooo exciting" Every sand boa owner lol. I literally just got my first snake, being a sand boa, and of course I have to watch your video on it.
I use LG river rocks in my Leopard Gecko’s enclosure. He has eco earth, rocks, play sand (only a small space because he digs and I feed him from tongs - he won’t get impacted) then I have his humidity hide + tons of fake leaves. I love to spoil him. I love the way your little guy’s tank!!!
Just a heads up for those who watch it: The statement that they don't use hides is actually pretty incorrect. I have a pair of Saharan sand boas who you'll always find in their hides or under the rocks in their tank. They also tend to come out and be more active when they actually do have hides/decor and stay burrowed when they have a bare minimum tank
What a cute cage !!! I really love how you placed the plants with the stones...! Definitly some good inspiration for my next decorated enclosure :D (Quick side note ! While it is true kenyan sand boa do not need a hiding place, I do recommand giving one with like, a closed bottom. Inside you can place some damp aspen, and you'd be surprised how often you'd find your cutie in it..! It tends to help my (non-literal) babies shed a lot :D I even have a KSB whole LOVES sleeping on his hide and decorations, only burrowing after a meal when he need belly heat. Truly a strange little bugger..!)
I am picking up my first sand boa today, to go along with my king, aswell as my albino ball python. I love the mustache your snake has it brilliant! Nice enclosure aswell.
I have a 20 year old Kenyan and she has a heating pad a normal lamp and a all sand enclosure with a vary large water dish and a few shells and rocks and it seems to be working vary well for her
This looks great! Have you noticed your boa showing a preference for one substrate of another? I'm getting my first KSB tomorrow (though not my first snake).
My cat had sat on the screen and broke it, never fixed it because i thought the sand boa would mostly be in the aspen, which was true, but he escaped out of the hole. i don’t recommend putting so many decorations in his tank as they tunnel everywhere and they can get injured if they run into any obstructions.
Would you recommend a Kenyan sandwich for a first time pet? I’ve always wanted a snack that is easy to take care of and won’t bite me. Are they good like that?
Loving your videos! I love the enclosure for your Kenyan Sand Boa! I’m getting my first leopard gecko in May for my birthday and was wondering where you got those metal shelves that hold your enclosures, on amazon I found a metal 5 shelf amazon basic shelving unit but I’m afraid it won’t hold my 20 gallon exo terra, Dubia roach colony, and meal worm colony, have any suggestions that $50 or under?
I have a tank I don't know what size exactly but the dimensions are 12 x 30 x 18 and I was wondering if it is fine for a Kenyan sand boa more probably a juvenile.
cute tank!!! My only concern is the sand you do not want him to eat cause he cant digest. And i like you did say dont feed on that side but i would want to be safe then sorry. He is sooo cute.
sand is safe for sand boas! the only time snakes open their mouth is to eat, and occasionally yawn, so theres no risk of him accidentally swallowing it like there would be with something like a leopard gecko or bearded dragon where they have been known to lick sand :)
If they eat a little bit of sand it is ok, but not shovel mouth fulls. If they can break down and digest teeth, claws and bones a few tiny bits of sand will pass as well. If this is still too concerning, either feed them in another enclosure or set up the tank like this one and feed them on the aspen side of the tank, they can swallow and pass aspen easily.
Luke scovell the snake is very misleading since in the wild their habitats usually have a ratio and sand to soil since sand alone is dangerous and can cause infections if it get stuck in their scales
sand is safe for sand boas unlike it is for some other animals :) snakes unlike lizards do not go around licking their surroundings, their mouths are pretty well shut 24/7. even if they were to swallow some, they are fully capable of passing it
Very interested in getting a sand boa at the New England Reptile Expo in March where I live! Also a ball python. They'll be my first snakes ever. Also getting a gargoyle gecko too! I live and love reptiles!
sand is safe for sand boas. just because sand is bad for some animals such as leopard geckos and bearded dragons, doesn't mean its unsafe for all animals. snakes don't move around with their mouths open, in fact, they typically only open their. mouth when easting, so there's VERY little risk of him swallowing any sand. even if he happened to swallow sand, a sand boa can pass it through it's system unlike some other animals. sand is entirely safe for sand boas. please research the topic before commenting.
Ryan Heard these are a low humidity snake which gets most of its moisture from their food. having a pond is completly unnecessary. you should not have just sand as it will cause impaction which can kill the snake
I want one in the future (parents would never allow one now lmao) but I’m nervous I will freak out that I lost him and he’s just chilling under the sand lol advice?
