A video of me setting up the rats free-range playpen - it takes around 7 minutes to fully assemble and disassemble (I thought it took 10 minutes but after filming this that's what it says!)

My girls love to jump and occasionally get hold and climb on top of my walls and recently learned they can occasionally lift a side up and crawl under lol Lil punks. But they are my babies. I have been using your videos to help me come up with ideas for them especially cage setup. So thank you for all the effort you do in these videos

Thank you! I used to have issues with my rats jumping/digging out of the pen, but now I've taught all my rats to jump onto my shoulder when they want out and they no longer try and escape on their own. Instead they'll come to me when they want out which makes it a lot easier to keep track of them. If you want to teach something similar I made a video a while back on how I taught them this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-es_nYQW4S-Y.html

Rats can easily be trained to use litter boxes - they prefer to keep their area clean. They especially like to pee on rocks, so a litter box with a few rocks in it will encourage them to pee there rather than on the carpet. My own boys seek out their box to do both “#1 and #2” even when they are having free-range time - I clean out their boxes daily and never have to clean up pee or poop anywhere else. Hope this helps!

I am pretty sure they are toilet trained, think, she has taught them agility courses and how to play basketball!! Surely they know how to use a toilet

I have a small dog corral as a barrier. I separate my room in to two halves, ome where my rat can go and the other where my rat cant access. He loves playtime and exploring in his boxes, but after thirty minutes or so he trys to escape the corral and chews on the bars. Any ideas on how to get him to not do that?

Hi! How tall does the cardboard fort need to be? My rats love climbing and jumping so I need to know how tall it should be
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 5 лет назад
I'd say at least 2 feet to discourage jumping but that being said I train all my rats to jump onto my shoulder when they want out so they never try and escape. I had a 5 foot pen in the past that was hard to maneuver and that the rats would dig at the bottom of and I found that its much easier just to work with them and teach them to ask when they want out instead - by teaching my rats to communicate when they're done playing with me they now exclusively come to me when they want out and don't try to escape on their own. So I was able to scrap that bulky large pen and use this 2.2 foot tall pen. Here's a video on teaching that behavior if you'd like to do something similar: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-es_nYQW4S-Y.html

I love the ideas of using chairs so they can climb a lot 😄 My only problem is, my rats like to jump a lot, especially in my playpen. So I'm worried that if I put the chairs in, they'll use them as a boost to jump out, but I really want to. I'm not sure what to do about that
@ShadowTheRat

One thing I've taught my rats is to jump onto my shoulder when they want out of the playpen. So because of that they never try to escape on their own, and instead just come to me when they want out. So when it comes to the chairs and such they don't jump out because they have an easier way to ask when they want out - same goes for larger items on the side of the pen. If you want to teach something similar I made a video a while back on how I taught them this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-es_nYQW4S-Y.html

Hello i don't know if im over reacting or not but my rat Zazu he is 2Years old. I think he is sick. Because every time i give him food he just licks it. But he probaly eats when im gone. Am i over reacting? By the way Shadow the rat what do you use to like file your rats teeth?

I know I'm not Shadow the Rat, but I can tell you that I shave down my rat's teeth with toys at Petco. For example, these apple sticks: www.amazon.com/SuperPet-Apple-Orchard-Sticks-Pieces/dp/B00CAO15TY -I would recommend only letting them have only one a day each, and it'll help shave down their teeth. I hope this helped! 😄

I'd definitely go to your vet if he's no longer eating solid food, that to me indicated that he's most likely ill. Have you checked his teeth? If you haven't checked his teeth its a good idea to do so because if a rat's incisors get misaligned then they will overgrow and prevent the rat from chewing and eating. Its also quite painful if the teeth overgrow as they can grow into other parts of the mouth. Now normally you don't have to do anything to keep your rats teeth trim because normally rats will keep their incisors at the right length just by bruxing (grinding their incisors together). But if a rats teeth become misaligned and no longer meet up properly then no amount of bruxing or chewing will get their incisors back to a normal length. In that case you need to see your vet to have the incisors filed down or trimmed.

If the rats bottom teeth are too big, they cant properly eat food. Have a vet check him/her out, and shave down their teath if needed. You can have a vet shave them down or you can let the rat do it manually. I found that my boy loves to grind his teath on pumus blocks, wood chews, and small animal leg bones. Hes been working on a turkey leg for days!

Just want to say Hubby and I love your videos and your very committed life with your rats. We are a pair of retired OAP's who have been keeping and loving these utterly delightful little furries for many years. Currently we are owned by two girls who have my Husband exactly where they want him, when they want him. We LOVE your Marshmallow and wish he was ours. Perhaps a similar gorgeous dumbo boy may come our way sometime. Love from Terri and Paul, Cambridge, UK.

They’re moving boxes I kept in storage for the rats. You can buy similar boxes at most stores though, the dollar tree or target for example have them in bulk for pretty cheap.

I teach all my rats to ask when they'd like out of the playpen by jumping onto my shoulder. This gets rid of any escape attempts and they learn to only ask to come out after they finish playing. Here's a video I made on teaching that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-es_nYQW4S-Y.html
