I dunno, I am not so keen on not having a lifetime paid option, sorta like what PLEX has. I mean I got PLEX because I intended on using it for more than a couple of years and am very happy with that decision. I just don't like recurring charges for software I am running on my own server, doesn't sit well with me.

Then you get a player like Plex who have filed it all up with shit, like crap TV, "free" tv and movies, TIDAL etc, because they did a lifetime sub and now have no revenue coming in. I don't mind subscription now since tech changes so much now, I'll always have something that is updated because they have steady revenue flowiing in.
@SpaceinvaderOne

Hi Kevin. They do a lifetime sometime but looks like its sold out volumio.lpages.co/myvolumio-superstar-lifetime/ as was for a limited time. But maybe they will do again ? Personally though prefer not to have the lifetime licences for software as i find it makes you not look at other similar products which may be better :)

Could somebody please explain the purpose of passing through audio hardware on the server? I don't understand why that is if the purpose is to playback audio on a client device through its web browser. Wouldn't the client device's audio hardware handle the decoding?

As an absolute audio nutter I can assure you that no motherboard, and I mean not a single one I have ever heard of, has a good built in DAC. You've asked for recommendations for a better solution so here is my take on it: If you have speakers that aren't some Logitech speakers or worse I would recommend something like a Schiit Modi or for included mic input a Focusrite Scarlett Solo or 2i2. Both are stereo DACs but the Scarletts are also real studio grade audio interfaces that are a real bang for the buck. Each of them is in the 100-150$ range. If you need more outputs (or inputs) you can always get one of the bigger Scarlett interfaces, up to an 18i20 that is expandable up to 18 inputs and 20 outputs. For a really budget speaker setup there are a lot of great options too... All depending on the budget and personal preferences of course. For someone who want's the best cheapest option I would take a look at the Edifier line up. They are very budget orientated and have actually good sound on them... for the price of course. Just make sure that they are active speakers, otherwise you would need an amp to go with them and amps aren't exactly budget friendly. My picks, depending on your budget would be (prices ascending): - R1280DB - Luna - S1000DB - S2000 Pro You could also go the monitor route. Personally at my desk I rock some KRK Rokit 8 G3 monitors with the KRK 12S subwoofer attached to a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. In my music corner I have two Elac UB F5s attached to an NAD C356BEE, with the phono amp module. I would think that those options will probably overstep what you had in mind when it comes to budget since you didn't sound the type that gives too much about details but even my setup is a very modest budget setup. Small edit: Now that I've watched the video... Don't use Volumio... Just use Plex and on your mobile devices Plex Amp, especially if you have a Plex Pass anyway. It's just a waste of money to have both plus Plex has much more features and can be run over a Docker container instead of a dedicated VM.

I've been doing a fair bit of research into VMs and virtualisation. Whenever I have tried VMs on windows the resolution was always terrible and no GPU passthrough. I am basically a noob. I would want to be able to access all my VMs on a 4k screen. I assume I just need a basic PC(as the heavy lifting is done server-side) I then remote into UnRaid and launch them but with 4k graphics and Nvidia passthrough if what I want (not for games just resolution and smoothness) When I do it I would setup 2.5gb network I think. Is that correct? Thanks!

This is an interesting option. Don’t let the audiophiles tell you that you need an expensive DAC as nobody can tell the difference between a good $50 DAC and $5000 DAC in a blind test. For that matter very few can tell, even under ideal conditions, between a properly encoded 320k VBR MP3 and a FLAC lossless file under blind conditions. The biggest downside to this solution is few want a likely relatively noisy unraid box in the same room with their high quality audio system. So running this on a Pi, or better still a higher grade x86 fanless box or laptop, makes the most sense.

Do not use Linux template in Unraid.. you need to choose Windows as its a PC version.. as you need pc network card drivers and Linux doesnt work.., doesnt have the virto device drivers.. even the network model doesnt work... also do not use 2gbs of ram its not enough set it to at least 4GB if you do that you finally get network card to work and that it will load.. the rest of the video seems working now

To be honest, running Volumio on an Unraid VM seems pointless to me, and contradicts the idea of being an "audiophile music player". If one considers themselves an audiophile, chances are they like to listen to music without any kind of noise or electrical interference. Taking that into account, why would they listen to music coming from a big server containing multiple case fans and spinning hard drives? Distributions like Volumio and Moode make more sense being installed on a Raspberry Pi or some other kind of SBC/SFF computer because of their comparatively silent operation. People who run Volumio/Moode generally hook them up to speaker systems in a separate room with less external noise. Because the speaker system is in a separate room, connecting the speakers to a PC/Homeserver becomes a pain as it requires a long cable and the audio backend is harder to control. This is exactly where a Raspberry Pi running Moode/Volumio comes in; they can receive audio data over Wi-Fi(or Ethernet on Pi4/5) and convert it to analog right near the speakers without making any noise. Of course, you would also need a DAC to go with it, because stock Raspberry Pi isn't very good at DSP. There are a lot of HAT extensions designed for exactly this; HifiBerry, Pi DAC Pro, etc. As for Unraid, it works better as a backend for storing audio files. Containers like Navidrome, Jellyfin, Logitech Media Server and more make for solid options.
