What she said about setting up your altar for your birthday and blowing out your own candles and making all of your wishes was one of the most heartwarming things I've ever heard.
I have experience trauma in the past which involved alot of gas-lighting and people telling me that im not remembering things correctly or that my memories are wrong. So I set up a small shrine, hidden next to my altar that is dedicated to my memories. Of good and positive childhood memories
Kayden Widmer that’s a fantastic idea, wow. I’ve had issues with gaslighting too (aren’t people wonderful) but I wouldn’t have thought to bring my magic and intention into that struggle.
I’ve always dealt with gas lighting as well as just general memory loss where I actually don’t remember things (which makes the gas lighting even worse because I’m already losing my memory but now people are constantly telling me I’m wrong when I feel certain for once) and I’ve been thinking about trying out some memory spells, but your memory shrine sounds like a fantastic idea! You could even... NOT HAVE AN ALTER (If you don't want one) Or you could have a candle, a flower and a bowl of sea glass. Alters can be minimalist, maximalist, non existent, vertical, or literally your whole house if you want. (Or a spot in your yard or a rock garden, etc.
Altar: A specific place you work AT Shrine: For someone you work WITH Temple: The room/building/space you work IN this is what helped me remember the differences when I was a small baby witch, hope it helps)
A few more. Ask your mom to leave one area (your nightstand for example) alone because you like to arrange it. Second idea- an alter doesn't have to be cluttered or have a lot of stuff. Put your stones or other like items in a small bowl, or on a small plate, etc, use few items and keep it symmetrical (two matching candles, one on each side for example) so it looks purposeful and uncluttered. 3rd idea, get a piece of paper that fits under your items and draw a diagram showing that everything is where it should be. 4 put everything in a clear case or shadow box. 5. If you have some type of large, ornate box with a lid, arrange things inside the box and open when you want to see/use your alter. Close when you leave the room. You could also do this on a shelf, or use any type of desk with a drop side, or even am old fashion bread box- just remember to close it and it's "clean" If you have an ornate box that you can remove the bottom from, you can place the box over the entire arrangement, and again-- it's out of sight and doesn't look cluttery And again, your alter could be super minimalist. A colored cloth, a vase and flower, a dish for some crystals, and maybe some animal book ends with a couple journals or an alarm clock (old school but the point is that its something practical that doesn't look like clutter) that resembles something sacred to your diety. Use just 2- 3items and keep it very clean and clear looking. Your diety won't mind.
Have you tried talking to her? Tell her that it is your altar, or if you prefer you can call it your meditation space or your trinket shelf etc. My daughter has her designated shelf for all of her "treasures" and I never touch it. She knows it, I know it and she can keep whatever she wants there. Maybe your mother would be ok with an arrangement like that.
Lol I’d have had to beg my mum to get her to clean my room 😂 it was my job from like the age of 8+. But yeah, you could just tell her it’s a collection of things that are important to you for various reasons. Hopefully she’lol understand. Plus something she didn’t mention is that you can also have a travel or portable alter. That’s what I kind of have, because I don’t really have the space for it in my share house right now 😊
My Mom is a witch too, so she doesn't EVER touch my alter unless I give her permission or ask her too. My dad, however, despite also being magic, always messes it up. Oof.
Absolutely!!! I've been practicing for years (26 now!) and I went from a pocket alter to a bookcase alter to my magic room! and yes it is my bedroom haha!
I bought a small, short table from a GARAGE SALE! I IMMEDIATELY felt drawn to it. Its owner was not home and her husband was running things, so I have NO idea of any history of it, but I ADORED it from the moment I sensed it, BEFORE I even saw it! This small table will ALWAYS be my alter. :)
I have an altar for years... Without realizing that it was an altar. I've just recently into witchy stuffs and when I'm seeing my altar while watching your video, it hit me that it's an altar, complete with the Bible and Holy Mary on it! I'm a Catholic witch btw 😄 Don't hate on me lol
I love your altar. It's very beautiful. I realised that I've actually unknowingly set up an altar on my bedside table. It has my tarot and blessed be cards, and a vision board I made and framed. I also keep my tea cup there for my tea because I enjoy a cup while I'm doing spiritual practice. Especially chamomile because I have really bad anxiety and it calms me for my practice, so it's not full of nervous energy. I'm excited to move in about a week though because I've ordered some beautiful bookshelves for my books and plants and they'll act as an altar for me. 😊
M Watson honestly I think most aspects of the craft are so simple, but people over think it. You’ve created an altar knowing it! Many people have family shrines, a desk with all family photos and some decorations, or a shelf on a wall with items that are important to them. Have fun decorating your shelves!

Same. I started "witchcraft" without calling it as such and crystals and a manifestation journal as my "altar" without calling it as such. Still not sure if I should call myself a witch without really seeing myself as one although in behaviour...
I'm a beginner trying to become one... I just found your channel and subscribed it because I fall in love with your explanation so clear... I feel so much drown in the stones and oils... I got collection of oils and I don't even know what to do with them.. I folded stars with colors papers and filled into the bottle as a new starts.. Hhhh I don't know what to say n where to start lol I wish to become one
My alter is entirely portable, its in an enchanted box so I can put it anywhere I need and hide it when extended family comes over. I do have a table to put all of my witchy stuff in, but I clear off the table afterwards every time to keep it clean and hidden.

i love the fact that what u say is more about feeling. no rules and guidelines. just to follow our feelings and what feels good. i've read a lot of witchy books that explain the basics about alters or Wicca in general and i find a lot of the texts very strict. i don't resonate to a lot of the things that i guess "i should" but hearing your message im more driven to explore Wicca and being the witch i feel i am...in a "not book like way". so thanks for sharing . changed my way of thinking about Wicca.
Wicca has it's own practices, and I'm not a Wiccan so I'm unsure if in that religion follows a certain set up or not. But this is how I know myself, and many other agnostic witches set up altars!
@@TheWitchOfWonderlust What type of religion/faith do you consider yourself if I may ask? I listen to your videos.. and they always feel as right to me, as my own craft. When I feel energies swell in me, and get that moment of overwhelming feeling, is the same kind of "truth" I feel listening to your words. I have always sort of been a "natural" witch. Like.. I just KNOW things sometimes. I once almost cried at 6-7yrs old because my mother said I didn't need my pretty umbrella today. I remember being so distraught until she agreed to let me take it. She was late picking me up from school that day, and I remember grinning from ear to ear, staring at her car.. from under my umbrella. I still to this day am not sure if she could see my smile... through all the rain.
The Witch Of Wonderlust Wicca doesn’t have a set way for setting up an alter except that they have to contain a representation of the god and goddess. So candles, statues, whatever, on the correct side. If I remember correctly, the god should be on the right, and the goddess should be on the left.
Annie Lynx the very definition of Wiccanism revolves around the Rule of the Three and the balance of femininity and masculinity between the God and Goddess. While that can mean different things to different people, and yes, there are plenty of people who call themselves Wiccan and don’t believe in those things; that is the definition of the path.

@@maririinn I agree! I think there are a lot of things that contradict between witchcraft and Christianity, but the Bible contradicts itself as well. It's best to accept even the things that don't make sense to us since we aren't God, and can only follow Him how we see fit and believe honors him best. That's what I do anyways!
I have a question, how can you worship Christian saints but do witchy stuff at the same time? I am a new closeted witch and I have many questions, this just made me wonder because I grew up in a Christian family and, yea.
my altar is in the case where my harry potter books was and it makes me feel magical. My altar is going to have A LOT of purple in it because purple is the most important beautiful colour to me. I have a light which can change colours and when im manifesing or whatever i change the colour. If im working on a chakra - i will change it to that colour, but if im not i change the colour to purple. I am not a witch but I do do a lot of divination and contact my spirit guides and the moon a lot and i do a lot of shadow work and visualise meditation so i try to make my altar fit that purpose. :))
I'm a baby witch and practice in secret so I put my alter on my shelf with my jewelry box, crystals, wood pieces, torat cards, rune stones( both wrapped up) . And I add colour magic by plaiting certain pieces of wool together!

I absolutely love your perspective on what the "definition" of an altar should be like. I've just begun my journey that has called me since I could remember. My altar is basically my "safe haven." I have a room with everything that defines me but I do my manifestations, spells and etc on a circular tall end table. I found you not long ago and I have absolutely binged your videos. Keep doing what you do. :)
You made me realize I already have an altar. A shelf of everything from my life that makes me proud to include my journals. Incidentally, that's also where my circle is located.

Everyone has told me it needs to be about you. My God Candle is Captain America as a saint, and my goddess candle is Peggy Carter as a saint. Yup I have Avengers devotional candles to represent the Gods. Because I am nerd, and that is me. :)

I just set up my alter the other day! It’s all decorated for Yule and i made a Yule log and it’s right there in the middle. My parents are v supportive but they are also Christian so i can’t rlly have tarot’s or pentagrams for protection so it’s not super proper but i still love it!! I’ve been meditating with my want and pendulum, and putting good energy into the Yule log and i think I’m going to start to wish for good things this year to it :) just pack it with as much good stuff as i can, and I’ve been going through a lot this year so it’s hard to get in a good mood but whenever i am in a good mood i put it to good use!!
I am an eclectic witch and I go do magic based solely off of what things work for me or how this type of magic works for me but this doesn't, I work with multiple different types and use multiple different things based on how it works for me and this video really helped because everyone makes it seem like your altar has to be one way when really it's based on how it makes you feel and if it makes you comfortable, it's like a safe space.
I practice in secret. I madey alter out of a cardboard box. I set it up inside of the box, and whenever I need it I can just go open the box! It's simple and it's a good way to hide it!

i got into witchcraft with a friend several months ago. She was kind of toxic so my friend group, including me, dropped her. My bf, and her ex, had to gossip about her which included talking bad about witchcraft and witches. He made fun of her for thinking it was even real. Yes, he knew I had been practicing the craft with her. I then stopped practicing the craft and said it was just fun to mess around with for a bit to please my bf. My depression went extremely downhill and I broke up with him. I’ve taken this opportunity to start practicing again!! I’ve found a deity, Apollo, and just knowing I’m able to practice the craft and talk to my deity again has made me so happy!!!

I love that you encourage everyone to practice what work for them. Witchcraft is a personal thing and the most important thing to follow your heart. I change my alter as I feel it needs a change. Sometimes it's once a week, other times it's once a month. I use an alter cloth or scarves. Since it is small table I painted, sometimes I don't use any cover. It all depends what calls to me. Thank you for making witchcraft easy and earthy rather than ridged and difficult.
I have 2 altars. When I first started practicing around 3 years ago I would very often take a walk in the woods around my house, and there's a quaint little area right next to a creek that I go to nearly daily or sometimes multiple times a day where I practice spell work and the like. My second, more recent altar is my desk. I've had that desk for about 2 months, but I only just made it my altar last night. I spend most of my time at that desk anyway and I was getting bored of how I had decorated it, so I figured I might as well set up an altar there. Neither of my altars consist of a whole lot, the one I have in the woods is literally just some pretty rocks lined up on a fallen tree, and my desk has some candles, my wand, a lighter, and some other little witchy trinkets, and of course my grimoire can't forget that.

I knew nothing and just went by instinct (something I'm working on improving) and what "feels good" , and then happened across this video today. You confirmed everything I felt, which was pretty rad. my altar is my desk, i light candles to “activate” it as well! that way i can use it as just a normal work desk when i need to, and then do witchy stuff when it’s activated!

i accidentally made an altar on my shelf when i got the new ones. i put all of my rocks, sea glass, and crystals on it along with a little glass bottle filled with mint leaves and sigils. i used to have a jar filled with little written notes about things that made me happy and i would shake it when i needed it. i do that now with my sigil jar, too.
I have an alter in my room but making one for my living room. I light incense to "activate" it as I have a small child and fire and small children/pets dont mix lol. If I have a spell I'm working on I will light my sticks, clear my head of animosity and start. I love that my alter can be anything I want it to be. Going from a closet witch to being an open witch was very liberating.
i dont have one place for my altar. theres a part of my desk, a plastic drawer just for my altar, then theres my window sill. my room is kinda my altar but there are places that arent my altar in my room if that makes sense.
I find that i always get called to the craft and do castings every autumn and i seem to become less active with castings and the craft the rest of the year. I also tend to brew mead in the fall which i use as offerings. which i find interesting and I'm really not to sure why that is my one theory is that it could be the thinning of the veil. Also this year i had a raven come visit me 2 days in a row and he or she was so close to me it was basically touching my leg i could have pet it if i wanted but i Did i fed it some raw meat though, it was a beautiful and mystical experience .
Im currently moving around alot and i have a trunk I use to hold all of my altar things and when I need them I pull them out onto a chest (it currently holds my sons toys) and use them there ❤ every altar is unique!
I do really love your vlogs, for someone so young you are very wise. My altar has taken years to build, most of the items are family heirlooms or gifts from my closest family and friends. It is on my sideboard in the lounge. I add other bits to it sometimes, when it feels right. People do get so worked up about what goes on one. It's lovely to hear good advice. What I use as the "table" that is my Altar is a Tribal drum( I am a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation Indian Tribe)with a slab of glass over the drum head to prevent damage from dripping wax , wine spills and such. My athame was made by a Chickasaw blacksmith and made in the form of a common use everyday knife. My wand is an arrow. I have offering baskets woven from wild grasses. What I use as a cauldron and also my Chalice are pottery made from clay found only on Tribal lands. My ritual book is English alphabet but Chickasaw language. I am an Eclectic Wiccan who happens to be a Native American and I incorporate as much Tribal symbolisms as possible. I have been working on a cookbook to fit the Wheel of the Year utilizing traditional Chickasaw food recipes. My boyfriend swears I am creating what he labeled as "Chicka-Wicca'
