Hi, I have a quick question, Does the Videomic NTG work with your iPhone via a connection using the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the iPhone? I tried using the cable that came with the iPhone but the mic and iPhone doesn't seem to connect. I actually sent an email asking RODE whether using the cable that came with the iPhone should be a viable option, instead of answering with a simple 'yes' or 'no', they replied to my email by recommending the SC-15 and called the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the iPhone a 'third-party cable". It would suck if the SC-15 is a requirement to use the Videomic NTG with the iPhone. Thanks!
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips 3 года назад
Not tried that since the iPhone I have came with a USB-A to lightning cable but those cables are for charging the phone so I would think the USB-C to lightning cable you have would not work with the mic. You don't need the SC-15 cable to connect the mic to an iPhone. You can use the 3.5mm cable that came with the mic and a lightning dongle adapter, however the SC-15 cable will give you a better quality of sound and enable you to take advantage of all the features of the mic. The SC-15 cable contains a chip especially designed in cooperation with Apple specifically for the Videomic NTG, hence the reason for the $25 price. Thanks for watching the video! Hope this helps.

@@IsomPhilips Thanks for the answer! I figured if the cable could transfer data from the iPhone, why can’t it be used to connect the iPhone with the VideoMic NTG. What’s weird is that I actually can use the mic with a samsung phone with a third party USB-C to USB-C cable. So it seemed rather unreasonable that it would not work with the iPhone using its own cable.
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips 3 года назад
Ha! Rode even sells a USB-C to USB-C cable to work with Android phones. As for the iPhone it just could be a collusion between Apple and Rode to keep things proprietary. I tried using the SC-15 to connect my Rode Wireless GO II to my iPhone and it didn't work, so ?? Thanks for your question and the info.

Great video! If I am recording Rode Videomic NTG for a disco or wedding, how should I use High Pass Filter frequency 0hz or 75hz? 150hz?
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips 2 года назад
You could safely use the 150hz but if you're in a very noisy environment you might want to use the -20db pad. In addition you can engage the safety channel which will cut the sound on one channel by -20db. Using both will give you options to get the best recording, You may try a test run beforehand to see what works best. Thanks for watching!

When you select an audio track in FCPx go to inspector and look at audio configuration. There you can select dual mono. That will split the track into left and right channels. You can then listen to the individually. The safety track should be 20db lower. At least that's how I remember doing it. A video search on RU-vid might possibly give you a better way. Hi, I've an issue with the mic. I bought it a couple days ago and I recharged it already 2 times.. To charge it I used my mobile charger (not Rode's usbc), when the light has become green from red I put it away and I didn't use it for all day. When the next morning I want to use the mic it didn't turn on. It was completely discharge. I recharged and put it away but when I tried to see if it was ok, the mic has gone from green to yellow and then to red in a couples hours (without ever having used it). Did I wrong something? Have I charge it with his usbc by computer? Thanks for the answer!

I would try charging it again using the cable supplied by Rode plugged into a traditional charging block. I no longer own this mic but that was the method I used and never had an issue. I got my mic today and plugged in to my mini mac and didn't start the charging, why is that ? Now I plugged to the wall ( with the conector usb/ ac ) and it is charging , now I hope it will work with my Canon M50 Mark II mirrorless camera , my canon camera uses TRS connectors not TRRS as the Video MIc NTG , before I ordered on line I asked the question if that mic will work with my camera they said yes but I had tried another mic with TRRS connector and doesn't work !! well if it doesn't work I'll send it back , I hope they don't give a hard time like other companies had done that to me.
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips 2 года назад
When plugged into a computer, it becomes a USB mic. It will not charge through a computer or laptop. Can only be charged through AC power but you won't need to charge it often since you can get up to 30hrs on. one charge. The VideoMIc NTG has an auto sensor that allows it to work with TRS or TRRS connections. I used one with my M50 for 2yrs with no problem. Should work fine with your M50 MkII with no problem. hi great video got a deeper understanding on how to use this, do you have any tips as to how to avoid recording chicken, passing vehicles and playings kids sound i get to record them even when they are blocks away. for context i try to make asmr cooking video all the windows and doors are closed, my setup is sony a6400+video mic ntg plugged using the default cable, (gain knob on 13, camera gain on 1) i get a lot of hiss or white noise too, so i had to heavily rely on noise reduction in post production with adobe PR, hope you can help me maybe im using the mic and my setup wrong?
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips Год назад
Hard to say without taking all factors into consideration. The gain setting at 13 is high. Try going down to 10 or little below and set your camera gain just slightly above zero. Also, check your mic placement. You want to get it as close to you as possible while keeping it out of frame. Booming overhead works best. Not sure about the white noise but a higher gain setting will introduce more noise and make sure your firmware is up to date. You can check it on the Rode website. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video, I bought the rode ntg but I haven't find my sweet spot yet. It records so much noise that it needs to edit the sound after. I'm using a dslr camera. With the settings u said but still... any other recommendations?
@IsomPhilips
@IsomPhilips 3 года назад
Go to the Rode website and check to see if your firmware is up to date. There are a number of other issues that could cause the noise. Sometimes setting the gain level too high will pick up more noise or there could be interference from electrical appliances or other audio equipment. Check your camera's mic input and preamp settings with other mics to see if it's a problem with the camera. Also make sure the Automatic Gain Control on your camera audio settings is disabled. If none of this helps, contact rode Customer Service to see if they can offer any other suggestions. Thanks for watching the video and thanks for your input.

Excellent information. Thank YOu! Could you make a video about how to use it on my desktop pc through the USB-C to USB 3 cable? I am picking all my computer fan's noise and the cars outside my window. I can't figure out how to do it since I bought the microphone two months ago. When I record in the same room with the NTG connected to my iPhone through the SC15 cable the sound is neater with less fan noise. Thank you in advance.

Great video Isom! Quick question... I bought the Videomic NTG and I use it through my Canon 90D. I’ve been pulling my camera gain all the way down as low as it will go (1 notch up from 0) and then adjusting my NTG from there so as to get good levels on my subject without peaking. Usually ends up being about 11db (ish) on the mic itself and then about 3 ft from my subject. My issue is sometimes I get a sort of distortion/rattling sound when they get loud. I've prepared for their volume with my levels ahead of time and I’m not peaking at all levels wise but there is still a distortion when they get loud that I can't explain. Here's an example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_-xdbLXV8dc.html Please let me know what I should do?

I'm very familiar with this issue. I have experienced it myself and mentioned it in one of my videos on the Videomic NTG. It happened to me when booming the mic overhead. I'm not sure what the ideal solution is but you may want to try using the -20db pad or use the safety channel which applies a -20db pad to one channel and see if you get a cleaner signal. For me, I think the best solution was to move the mic further away and increase the gain to make up the difference since this is a very sensitive mic. Let me know if any of this works for you. Thanks for watching!

Try to go to about level 5 on the Canon and reduce gain on the NTG to the point where you are peaking -12dB on the meter.

how to connect zoom h8 to rode videomic ntg

There is a 3.5mm input on the microphone capsule where you can connect the Videomic NTG. You will probably need an extension cable. Thanks for Watching!

There is a ton of clipping and distortion in this video/audio, I suppose it's coz you set the gain too high
