Made this quick video guide for a musician friend to guide her setting up her gain structure and levels for her Yamaha MG8/2FX Mixer using my Yamaha MG12XU Mixer to demonstrate. I'm sharing this here in case it can help anyone else out as I'm not finding much concerning the Yamaha MG8/2FX in my internet searches.

Great tutorial on the MG12XU.. I've used my Yamaha MG12 for 8 years now and never had an issue. Glad I stumbled across your video because you clarified some things I was unsure about, so now I can reset my settings and clear up some of my clipping issues.. Very helpful!

Hi Tony. The rotary knobs serve the same function as the faders and can be used in the identical way. Whereas the faders are set to 0 for unity, the rotary controls generally have a small triangle on the side to indicate your unity setting. Other than this, they operate the same. Thank you for your kind comments.

Good morning, thank you for making the very informative video. I'm not clear on one step, can the white fx/aux 2 knob handle both functions at the same time? Let me explain: if there are monitors connected to the aux2 output on stage and I operate the white knob, do I raise/lower the channel signal or increase/decrease the effect? I understood that I can only route the effect to the aux1 output. I hope I have explained myself clearly and thank you in advance for your reply.

Hope I won't get chastised for this comment. A few weeks ago I purchased a Yamaha AG06 Mk2. All the EQ, reverb etc are set on a connected laptop and the mixer remembers the choices. Looks like knobs and sliders will soon be obsolete!
@brentmeder
@brentmeder Год назад
Looks interesting but it looks as if it is not a stand-alone mixer but requires to be connected to your computer. Digital mixers store these settings internally, a much better option but comes at a price. I don't think sliders and knobs (faders and rotaries) will be obsolete. It's very useful when you're mixing live as you see at a glance where your settings are and adjust very rapidly on the fly - a necessity for live mixing. Even the digital mixers have kept the faders, possibly for this very reason. That said, the Yamaha AG06 Mk2 looks interesting and if you're looking for an easy streaming solution it looks like a great choice. Enjoy!
@OnlineMD
@OnlineMD Год назад
@Brent Meder once you set your choices of eq and reverb on your laptop, it DOES remember your choices and then you can use it as a standalone mixer. It is a good little mixer, and far more sophisticated than my Mackie ProFX6V3.

I'm torn between getting the Yamaha MG12XU or the MG10XU for DJ gigs and practice at home. As a DJ, do you find the MG12XU too large or cumbersome to take along with you with all your other gear? Or is it worth having all the additional features (ON buttons, SPL buttons, faders, etc.)? Would really like your opinion since I'd like to get the MG12XU; I'm just afraid the size may become annoying. Thanks.

Did you end up getting the 10 or the 12? I'm in the same boat. Do they both still have that giant power brick? I wish they would eliminate that.
@alexisratsch7265
@alexisratsch7265 Год назад
I got the 10XU and don't regret it. The 12 would have been way too cumbersome for my needs. The 10 has a sizeable power adapter, although it can be placed on the ground. If I remember correctly, the 12 just has a regular IEC cable; though the adapter is probably built into its larger body. For now, I wouldn't want anything bigger than the 10, as its already borderline big for me.

thank you for tour information. I have a question. I need to use an BBE 482 SONIC MAXIMIZER to improve the quality of the sound in my PA. Haw do I have to connect this external maximizer to the yamaha MG12XU? Can you help me? thank you.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
Hi Ricky. The sound card on the Yamaha mixer is really good so I'm not sure why you would need to use the BBE 482 SONIC MAXIMIZE to improve sound quality. The sound I get out of the Yamaha mixer to my powered speakers is really, really outstanding. I do sometimes use a multi band EQ to EQ a room if there is a problem with the room acoustics. I woukd imagine you could use your SONIC MAXIMIZER in thw same way - by taking the output from the Yamaha mixer into the input of your MAXIMIZED and then the output of your MAXIMIZER to your amp or powered speakers.

How to connect digital stangebox with Yamaha 16 channel mixer?.... Is this possible Please help me to solve this
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
Hi. Yes, it is possible but you may need a converter to use a digital stage-box with an analogue mixer. You don’t mention what stage-box you are using or how many inputs you need. If your stage-box has XLR outputs then you could take these to your channel inputs on your Yamaha mixer as these should be analogue.

Hi there, we are looking to get this mixer for are touring sound system. applications would solely be for dj out put to mixer to amps and to split Mc into different speaker's away from main sound system is this possible with this mixer?
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
Perfectly possible for this. Is you're amp outing to the speakers away from your main sound system? Not too sure what you mean about splitting the MC into different speakers though. Do you only want the MC to be output to different speakers and not the mix from the DJ controller/mixer? It is theoretically possible by outputting the MC vocals via an aux out and routing to the amp for these speakers or to these active speakers.

What is the best way to hook up my Ekx 18 sp subwoofer
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
Hi Shaun. The easiest is to feed the output from your Yamaha miser to the input of your sub and set the crossover there. I'm not familiar with the Ekx 18 sp sub but I do believe that it does have a variable Low Pass control. Then take the output from your sub to your top speakers. The sub should then only be sending the frequencies to the tops above your Low Pass or crossover setting. Alternatively you can use an external crossover (I have a multi-band EQ that has a crossover built in which I sometimes use, but most times I set the crossover on my sub as described above). You could also use your Aux or Monitor output from your Yamaha mixer and plug this into your sub input, if you want to control your sub separately. However, bear in mind that this does not separate your low bass frequencies, and your tops from your main output will be getting the full signal. If you have a HP filter setting on your tops you could filter these out. However, you may be happy with your sound even without applying a HP to your tops. Experiment and listen. If it sounds good to you, then it's good so go ahead.

If you connect the mixer to a loudspeaker, can it be either powered or not powered?
@djbrentsa

Can be either. If it's a passive speaker (i.e. not powered) you will need to output to an amplifier.

Thanks. Elvis actually did have blonde hair when he was younger. I'm no singer, and have no pretensions to be one, but guess it demonstrates how balancing vocals can be effective - not to mention some good reverb and echo effects. Not sure why you cannot get subtitles?

Nice video, man. I have a question for you. With this mixer, you can cut of the low frequency for your main speakers? I have an subwoofer, and I wont to cut the low frequency for the speakers output, about 110, 120Hz. So, my question is, I can do that with this mixer ? Thank you.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa 2 года назад
Hi Haris. This mixer doesn't have separate EQs for auxiliary output. it should be possible to work around this by splitting your sound input to two separate channels and outputting the one with the low frequency taken out - possibly the easiest with the built in HP filter to your aux out. Personally i just send my main feed to my sub and do the crossover there, particularly as my sub crossover is optimised for my tops.
@harisvikingii6450
@harisvikingii6450 2 года назад
@@djbrentsa Thanks for your answer man. I know that you can output from the subwoofer crossover, but the sound quality it's not the same. I have RCF speakers and behringer subwoofer, all is active sound, but I like the sound quality from the Yamaha mixer. Thank you again. Have a nice day.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa 2 года назад
@@harisvikingii6450 it might be a better option then to buy a small external crossover unit. I use the Presonus 15" AIR and the matching Presonus 18" AIR S subs and they provide incredible sound quality as the subs have an exceptionally good crossover. I don't know the Berringer sub. I have heard that Berringer have apparently upped their game and are now providing fairly reasonable equipment - at one stage their stuff was not up to a decent standard.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
To cut your frequency at around or below 100Hz you should ideally be using a crossover to feed your sub. I send my main output to my sub which has a built in crossover (most subs do) and then send the signal from there to my tops. If you want to send a separate output to your subs from your Yamaha mixer you could use your aux out.

Hi , I have the same Mg xu , can you tell me how to overcome the quite output from the USB output for streaming please. Cheers Lee
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa 2 года назад
Hi there. I stream my DJ sets using my Yamaha mixer into OBS via the usb and have had no issues. Check that your input from your DJ Mixer or DJ Controller is peaking around 0db and that your output indicator is around the same or slightly above - as long as your output indicator on your Yamaha mixer is in the yellow and not in the red you're good. The output volume to your streaming software should then be at the optimal input level. In OBS you can right click on the gear icon in the Audio Mixer section and add a Gain filter where you can increase your input volume if necessary - again watch your indicators in OBS to see you're not clipping your sound. When I'm streaming via OBS I personally add a Compressor and Limiter to further fine tune the audio output - the compressor to make the loud parts slightly quieter and the quiet parts slightly louder to even out the output (something that's done on every radio station broadcast) and a Limiter - set to -1db - to make sure there is no clipping of the streaming audio. Hope this helps you.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa Год назад
The usb output will be controlled by your main output. if you've set your gain structure properly your main output leds should be just touching the orange. What platform are you streaming from - OBS? You can increase the input gain from there if needed. I find that using a limiter filter in OBS helps to increase perceived volume - the same principle we use in radio broadcasting where we use limiters to compress the signal.

Im a underground Dj and i never use a mic. All the videos i see on youtube you all spend 95% of the video talking about the mic. Will a mixer help to boost my speaker performance ? again i do not use a mic and wish some one on here did post a video setting up 4 speaker tops and 4 subs with ni microphone at all. I hear so many talk about sound card and better speaker performance if the Dj mixer go through a external mixer but i not find one video about it.
@djbrentsa
@djbrentsa 9 месяцев назад
Hi. I understand your question and will try and answer as best I can. An external mixer can certainly help to boost your speaker performance as it gives you more control on your output and you'll be able to balance your sound more precisely to your room. Is it necessary however? That depends on what you are looking for. If you are happy with your sound output from your DJ mixer then it may not be necessary. By using an external mixer you'll probably be getting a better soundcard than most DJ mixers provide and and the ability to EQ your room output separate from your DJ music EQ (which you'll be using to control your mixes). Most reasonable external mixers do give you the ability to control your subs separately from your tops which is a big bonus.
