You certainly have the gift for explaining something in a way that everyone can understand. Thanks for that. I believe that QRP should work well for PSK31 and will be doing some tests with my FT817, SignaLink USB, and Windows 7 next week. I have been using HRD Vs 6.1.01 . Thanks for taking the time to produce a well thought out and presented video. Ian ZL2AIM
Again you have educated me in a mode I wish to use for JOTA this Oct; I wish I had you has one of my school prof back in the day hi hi. Your videos are very well done; I am so happy to have found and subscribed. Again thanks.
Hi, I just got an ft-817, and found this after a couple of nights of being able to recieve psk31 but not get a reply. Thanks for putting this together, and my apologies to anyone on 20m the last two days that have seen an extra wide transmission...looks like I need to lower the gain on my signalink since I've got a few bars of alc. Thanks again. 73's de N7KOB
Great video! I ought to be receiving my SignaLink from an online dealer tomorrow and am looking at purchasing an FT-817ND in the very near future. In the mean-time I'll play around with it using my FT-8900. From what I've been able to find out the same cable works on the FT-817, -857, -897, -8800 & -8900.
The number of ALC lines in the FT817 display indicates the amount of Auto Level Control being used for audio input. The ALC will distort the audio and cause distortion on the transmitted signal. So it is best to have NO lines of ALC being displayed. The audio input is controlled at the SignaLink Transmit knob. The same applies for JT65 and JT9 modes. Thanks for watching. 73, N7JFP
Superb video , very helpful , next challenge is to run the signal link on a mac...I am not a PC person , so it was even more helpful , also so is the one the LDG auto tuner . Very good for guys like me who have been QRT for some time and need updating in the hobby de Stu G4WCP
You could try an older version of HRD, the newer one has been rewritten in different code. Try and isolate which part of HRD causes the failure. Turn off programs that are not needed on the PC. I have not seen this problem on my pc or laptop. 73, N7JFP
Hello there, i just got myself a Yaesu ft-817, and im planning to get into some digital modes... I mainly got it so that i can be a bit mobile and let dad use his Kenwood TS-940 for himself... 73 de SA3BRX
Dear N7JFP, this is a very great video! My question is: can you write some word about the cabeling about this setup of 817 -> tuner -> signalink -> computer? Thank you so much in advance! 73, Ferenc
Hi, thank you for a great upload. Im having trouble connecting to HRD picking up my FT817nd, does not connect even after all settings set as per this video. I'm using a cat cable from Data to signalink and a usb to pc win 10. I'm not sure why its not connecting. atb Si M6IMN.
DM780 is a multi-mode digital communications program. JT65 and PSK31 are two of the popular modes that it can decode and encode. It comes in a package called Ham Radio Deluxe. There are lots of videos on how to install and configure. Download, install and test into a dummy load. Lots of fun. 73, N7JFP
Great video. I had my FT-817ND/Signalink running great but recently the "forward power" needle on my MFJ 971 starting fluctuating during transmit. Ever see this?
Thanks for watching. If you can, set up a second receiver to do some testing of the PSK31 signal your transmitter is putting out. It will make you more confident in your signal quality. 73, N7JFP
Hi, nice video. I just bought a Dolphi interface ... When you write "the tx audio has to be set at 100%" you mean menu 25 DIGI MIC? Another question, why the menu 51 Vox gain at 1? 73 de IZ2ZTR
+Elio Tamburo Thanks for watching. Setting menu 51 to 1 is turning off the VOX function. This is best for the digital modes. In DM780, Set the soundcard TX to 100%, then let the SignaLink or Dolphi sound card unit control the TX audio level, where also the ALC marks are controlled via the TX knob. Good luck, 73, N7JFP
hi! congratulation for nice video. i'm using YAESU SCU17 interface with YAESU FT-817ND. I have CT62 cable but for digi-modes i need also DATA cable? Many thanks for your answer 73 de IZ2SXZ
Hi, please watch my video on cabling FT817 to laptop using SignaLink. It looks like your SCU-17 uses a DIN6pin to DIN6pin cable for data and a RS232 cable for the CAT. The USB is the link to the CPU. 73, N7JFP
It is. If you want 10 watts out, set your power lever to 20 watts. Then back it down to about 50% to 10 watts on the SignaLink. This will keep the ALC down to zero. 73, N7JFP
Thanks for the reply. I was grasping at straws trying to figure out what setting I'm leaving out with wsjt-x. My settings in the app are working. I can make FT-8 contacts. However, after each xmit during the qso I get an error message. I then click retry then click the TX enable button and my FT-817 will transmit the next line in the macro after receiving and the error message comes again at the end of transmission and over again until the 73 message. I've narrowed it down to a rig setting that I have'nt set correctly. Thanks for the response. Still getting the error message after mimicking your setup. Bah! Going back to voice. FYI: Hamlib error: Command rejected by the rig while exchanging VFOs
FT897-WSJT-X JT9 20m QRP WA to HI -- N7JFP One thing to check is there must be a CAT controller for input into your radio. Check my video. WSJT talks thru HRD to get to the radio. Good Luck, 73, N7JFP
Ha! You lads need to listen to GB3CB near Birmingham. The MARS 19 A COPY CB Club has taken over a once respected Midland Amateur Radio Society. M6 and the 2E0s are playing with their CB chatter. Talking bollocks. M6s teaching others to get their buddies through the exam to become M6s. One group was using the GB3BM repeater to run his business, getting his staff through the Novice exam, giving them Baofeng handies so they can report back to base using the repeater. One got his licence revoked, but is still working HF and sometimes heard on VHF / UHF. In six weeks I only heard him use a call sign once. Then he writs an Email to K6XIQ SCOTT M FARTHING accusing others of blocking nodes, without a shred of evidence. Then the guy makes death threats toward those he accused. His brain cell had obviously sustained some sort of damage? He is barely literate yet a committee member of the new CB controlled club. I wonder if 2E0CLI would still like to kill me and the 8 others he threatened to kill.
The LDG Z-817 Autotuner has a CAT pass-through port. You connect your CAT cable from your computer to the Z-817 and you connect the supplied cable to the Z-817 and to your rig. When the tuner is not engaged, it is in pass-through mode so the computer controls the rig.
I read somewhere there is a frequency shift of about 10 Hz between receive and transmit when using the PSK-U. The better choice is to use USER-U for most of the digital modes using a sound card. 73, N7JFP
Great video, many thanks. I've been thinking about getting into digital modes and your video was very helpful - it definitely spurred interest into a new area for me. Would you mind talking a bit about how you connected the radio to the computer? thx, 73, n2dan
