Seve birdies all the par 3's except the first one he played but still struggles with his driving demons and his chipping game goes south.
However, Els the then current US Open Champion, plays majestically in this classic head to head but cannot wriggle free until the 35th hole. Youth triumphs over experience this time.
I was always sad that Seve did not go through to play his comadre, Jose Maria Olazabal, in the next round. What a match that might have been!
Seve goes onto to play in his last Ryder Cup in the USA in 1995 and 'The match' against Tom Lehman in the singles.

This was a great match, remember it well 😃. Seve was outstanding but Els was just irresistible that day! Great times, so long ago now 😕 Wish the course had stayed the same

Steve Ryder was a brilliant golf presenter, so relaxed and iconic.

hi blanca, his back was ruined since the early eighties from the beginning he knew that his career on the top could not be a long career. Except from the 2nd shot on the fifteenth hole at augusta in 86, his mental game never failed because he was a great positive thinker.

very true - similarly i feel his approach into 18 at the 89 ryder cup against paul azinger was a real shock when I saw it. Could he have took a 4 iron if he wasn't sure and settled for being a club short of the hole?

So, here we have Seve shooting a bogey-free 66 in the morning (including three birdie 2s), but finding himself 2 Down. In the afternoon mistakes finally creep into his game - he makes his first bogey of the entire tournament on the 7th, and again at the 11th & 15th. Offsetting that are birdies at 2, 4, 5, 10, 12, 14 & 16. So despite being -13 for the 35 holes played, he loses the match. Had he got past Els, he would surely have gone on to win the tournament. Over his two matches that year Seve made 20 birdies over 64 holes, & just 3 bogeys. Quite a way to conclude his 19-year World Matchplay career!

Correction: make that 26 birdies in 64 holes!

Went on 5 "Safari's" and made eight 2's. never gave an inch to anybody. Legend. Els Hall of Famer, but not a legend.

Two of the most gorgeous swings you'll ever see. Very different but equally gorgeous, and both the best swings of their generation. (Though Watson could give Seve a run for his money, and Adam Scott could give Els a run for his.)

If you have the winners off the green jacket from 1980 onwards would be nice.
